Singer-Songwriter Dan Fogelberg Dies

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY – 50 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — Dan Fogelberg, the singer and songwriter whose hits "Leader of the Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne" helped define the soft-rock era, died Sunday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. He was 56.

His death was announced Sunday in a statement by Anna Loynes of the Solters & Digney public relations agency, and was also posted on the singer's Web site.

"Dan left us this morning at 6:00 a.m. He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," it read. "His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him."

Fogelberg discovered he had advanced prostate cancer in 2004. In a statement then, he thanked fans for their support: "It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years. ... I thank you from the very depths of my heart."

1. Jeeze, I'm shocked. I would consider myself a fan and I didn't
even know that he was ill. No, Dan, I thank you from the depths of my heart. RIP.

Thanks for posting this albeit very sad news.

2. Requiescat in pace, Dan
Edited on Sun Dec-16-07 09:15 PM by ralbertson
Dan was a huge influence on my own songwriting back when I was learning how to do that. I always wanted to learn how to fingerpick a guitar as deftly as he did, but try as I might I could never hope to be in his league.

From http://www.danfogelberg.com/news.html ....

Sunday, December 16

Dear friends,

Dan left us this morning at 6:00 am. He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side. His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Blessed be, Dan. If anyone ever earned a ticket home to heaven on the wings of song, you did.

And I surely do hope your dad was waiting for you when you got there, too:

An only child alone and wild
A cabinet maker's son
His hands were meant for different work
And his heart was known to none
He left his home and went his lone and solitary way
And he gave to me a gift
I know I never can repay

A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love thru' discipline
A thundering velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand

The leader of the band
Is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs thru' my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band

My brother's lives were different
For they heard another call
One went to Chicago and the other to St. Paul
And I'm in Colorado
When I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I've chose
And come to know so well

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And papa I don't think I said
"I love you" near enough

The leader of the band
Is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs thru' my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band

12. I was just remembering when we were in college
DH is a musician and he and his friends didn't even have a TV. It was music 24/7. We would sit there and listen to Hendrix and Zappa and some other hard core hard rock and then every once in awhile one of the boys would play Fogelberg. And the girls would be happy.

Today, DH admits Fogelberg was a genius. We have nearly everything he ever recorded and were just converting some of our LPs to CDs a month ago. I am sitting here listening now. And I have a tear in my eye.

5. He will definitely be missed.
And I hope that every man who misses him will visit his Web site and pay heed to what it says about the necessity for being tested regularly for prostate cancer. It just might make a difference in their lives and those of others.

And felt that old familiar pain .........
And as I turned to make my way back home,
The snow turned into rain ..............

Rest well, Mr. Fogelberg, and thanks for the memories.

24. I had no knowledge that he was sick but I have attempted to buy
his music on CD's for months now. I just had a hankering to have his music in my car recently.

I am saddened at his passing.

Thanks Dan, you made many cold nights warm for me with your music and your words. I will miss you and promise never to forget.

The higher you climb,
The more that you see.
The more that you see,
The less that you know.
The less that you know,
The more that you yearn.
The more that you yearn,
The higher you climb.

The farther you reach,
The more that you touch.
The more that you touch,
The fuller you feel.
The fuller you feel,
The less that you need.
The less that you need,
The farther you reach.

28. Have you listined to many of his older albums?

Netherlands, Souvenirs, Captured Angel, Home Free, The Innocent Age etc. are all incredible.

My favorite song he ever did was a remake of a Judy Collins song. "Since you Asked". Go to track 9 to listen:

35. Yeah, I remember listening to Captured Angel so many times
that one copy wasn't enough. I had to have a second after I wore out the first album! I started converting my favorites of that era to cassette 20 years ago and just recently had a hankering for his High Country Snow album on CD. No one ever had it in stock.

Will visit the link tomorrow morning when I have a quiet house and time to reflect with the reverence that his music commands. Thanks for sharing it with me.

37. Missing YOU Dan...
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 01:46 AM by TheGoldenRule
Missing You:

Hard days I’m travelling
Alone for too long
Ooh, I’m missing you
I’m always somewhere
Where I never belong
Ooh, I’m missing you
I’m moving so fast now
It doesn’t seem true
Ooh, I’m missing you
I’m getting closer
But I don’t know what to
Ooh, I’m missing you.

Oho, if I had you beside me
Then I just might sleep through the night
Your love is the promise that guides me
All of the days of my life.

This life I’m living’s
Getting so hard to feel
Ooh, I’m missing you
The days are empty
And the nights are unreal
Ooh, I’m missing you

Oho, if I had you beside me
Then I just might sleep through the night
Your love is the promise that guides me
All of the days of my life
All of the days of my life.

Hard days I’m travelling
Alone for too long
Ooh, I’m missing you
I’m always somewhere
Where I never belong
Ooh, I’m missing you.

Oho, if I had you beside me
Then I just might sleep through the night
Your love is the promise that guides me
All of the days of my life
All of the days of my life.
