Romney gets tearful recalling war toll
Romney gets tearful recalling war toll
By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

LONDONDERRY, N.H. - Mitt Romney's eyes filled with tears Monday as the Republican presidential contender recalled watching the casket of a soldier killed in Iraq return to the United States and imagined if it were one of his five sons.

Adding a poignant twist to a story he often tells on the campaign, Romney recalled the scene at Boston's Logan International Airport while he was Massachusetts governor to make the point that the country remains united despite its differences over the war or other national challenges.

It was a counterbalance to a moment earlier this year, when Romney told a woman in Iowa that his grown sons — none of whom has served in the military — were serving the country by helping with his campaign. Romney later apologized for the remark, saying it was wrong to equate military service with campaign involvement.

"The soldiers that I was with stood at attention and saluted," Romney told employees at Insight Technology Inc., a company that makes infrared optical equipment for U.S. troops. "And I put my hand on my heart, and tears begin to well in your eyes, as you can imagine in a circumstance like that. I have five boys of my own. I imagined what it would be like to lose a son in a situation like that."

1. "imagined if it was one of his own sons" except that all of his sons have said that they can serve
the country best in "other ways."

4. I get teary eyed also, "imagining" if it is one of my sons. Problem is
that my son is 16 and it makes me sick to think that war hawks like Romney would create a draft to fight their wars and my son would get caught up in it.

6. And Romney's sons would be excused from the draft , obviously to campaign
for him.

Yeah, I'll bet his eyes teared up. :eyes:

It was probably the stinging cold wind!!

Just like he teared up about blacks being admitted into the Mormon church.
"He was so overcome with grief and relief he had to pull to the side of the
road because he couldn't see though all his tears..." :puke:

What a CROCK!!!!

11. No sympathy for Romney from me. Ever hear of Crocodile tears?
He's the typical Republican: as long as it doesn't impact him, his family, his business, or his cronies, he's OK with it. Let someone else pay the price for the GOP's STUPID, IDIOTIC, CRIMINAL POLICIES.

Furthermore, the country isn't united, and only someone totally out of touch with reality would still say that it is.

13. He's sentimental. So is bush. So was Hitler.
Sentimental politicians should be given a very wide berth.

14. It's a good thing his own sons have "other priorities" and are making "other sacrifices"
Please note that this transcript from the May 13th 2007 edition of 60 Minutes is from NewsBusters, a site which claims to "expose and combat Liberal Media bias." I was too damned lazy to Google other locations for the transcript. This is the first one that came up. So THERE.

CBS's Wallace to Romney Sons: 'Not One Agreed or Thought About Serving in the Military'

http://www.newsbusters.org/node/12753

MIKE WALLACE: While all of them have served their church doing missionary work around the world... has any one of you ever decided that you're going to put on a uniform and go to war?

JOSH ROMNEY: I feel guilty having not done it.

BEN ROMNEY: I've seen a lot and read a lot that has made me say, "my goodness, I hope I never have to do that."

WALLACE: Not one agreed or thought about serving in the military.

MATT ROMNEY: There are other sacrifices to make as well, and I hope to be able to make a sacrifice of that, you know, of that caliber at some point in my life.

WALLACE: Did you ever serve in the armed forces?

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: I did not.

WALLACE: Why not?

ROMNEY: I was at college. Then I went off and served my church for two and a half years.

WALLACE: In a mission.

ROMNEY: In a mission.

WALLACE: And because of his high lottery number, he was never drafted to serve in Vietnam, something he says he regrets to this day.

22. This is exactly why we need a Law in this country.
Bring back the Draft!

But only for the sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, and etc. for anybody serving as President, or in the Line of Secession.

Have them pushed through Basic and placed as ground troopers in any unit currently serving in combat or would be the first to go should combat be required.

Having Blood on the Line will tend to make people think twice.
