Drive Someone Insane with Postcards
ou are bidding on a rare chance to traumatize a treasured friend or relative with baffling, mind-numbing, mystery correspondence from abroad.

Here is the arrangement:

I will be spending the Christmas holiday in Poland in a tiny village that has one church with no bell because angry Germans stole it. Aside from vodka, there is not a lot for me to do.

During the course of my holiday I will send three postcards to one person of your choosing.

These postcards will be rant-ravingly insane, yet they will be peppered with unmistakable personal details about the addressee. Details you will provide me.

The postcards will not be coherently signed, leaving your mark confused, guessing wildly, crying out in anguish.

"How do I know this person? And how does he know I had a ferret named Goliath?"

Your beloved friend or relative will try in vain to figure out who it is. Best of all, it can't possibly be you because you'll have the perfect alibi: you're not in Poland. You're home, wherever that is, doing whatever it is you do when not driving your friends loopy with international prankery.

Your target will rack their brains in the shower. At dinner. During long drives. At work. On the golf course.

"Who did I tell about the time I got fired by a note on my chair?" they'll ponder, "And where the hell is Szczeczinek?"

Okay, 'fess up! Which of you is going to Poland?

Sounds SO much like pranks we planned in the early heyday of our 'Net life.

And just for the record, before YouTube and "rickroll" there was...........

Yes! David Hasselhoff. We used to torture our netfriends with surprise 'drive-by' e-mails with 'mystery links' leading to DH pics. We all loathed DH, nearly as much as we wanted Wesley Crusher on ST:TNG to "Die, Wesley, Die!!!"

2. Great prank!
Once we ordered Christmas photo cards from Kodak and mixed in with the photos of us was one of a totally unknown family. So I took it, wrote a very personal note (mentioning stuff like kids, etc) to a friend of ours.

They got it and, like you described, spent days thinking about this family and why they simply couldn't remember them. It really drove them to distraction.

6. I love pranks like this. Many of us conspired with the father of an adolescent girl ...
... to send her postcards with the (Nature Conservancy?) red-headed bird on it from wherever we traveled on business. The conspiracy spread to business contacts in countries all over the world, and grew to showing the "bird" in locations and settings limited only by imagination. She was getting postcards for YEARS and NOBODY ... I mean NOBODY leaked the secret. (She was a precocious kid with a GREAT sense of humor, so folks didn't want to spoil it. We all loved her and it became a 'thing' that she enjoyed immensely.)

11. I forgot about that bird!
Maybe we should all send postcards of the bird to every member of Congress with a caption that says "I want impeachment on the table!" or something to that effect. That is one crazy looking bird. Imagine a desk full of them with that quizzical look going, "Well, when are you getting it done? We are waiting!"

8. What a great prank!
If it wasn't quite so expensive, I would buy it and have them sent to my parents. This is totally their sense of humor.
