Poll question: Should Obama's fabricated endorsements be investigated?
Edited on Wed Dec-26-07 10:37 PM by Lirwin2
On edit: For those not aware, several ministers who were listed on Obama's website as having endorsed him, came forward and said that they have done no such thing.

they haven't endorsed him. He had listed them on his website as endorsements.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Two black South Carolina ministers listed by Barack Obama's campaign as endorsing his White House bid say they did no such thing, and at least two others affirmed their support only after being contacted by campaign workers when questions were raised about their endorsements.

Earlier this month, Obama's campaign released a list of what it said were nearly 130 senior pastors in South Carolina endorsing his run for the Democratic nomination. But when contacted by The Associated Press, several ministers said they have yet to decide who will get their vote and were unclear how they ended up on the Illinois senator's list.

"I really haven't decided to endorse him yet. I was thinking about it," said the Rev. Clifford Gaymon of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in rural Clarendon County.

Clinton list of endorsements from black ministers not quite so long, AP review shows

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton's support from South Carolina's black religious leaders may not be quite as extensive as her campaign suggests.

Clinton got a boost last week when she shared a South Carolina stage with dozens of supporters, accepting what organizers said were endorsements from nearly 90 ministers in the state. But an Associated Press review of an endorsement list supplied by the New York senator's campaign found that some of the backers were affiliated with religious ministries and outreach groups rather than churches, some were wives of ministers, two were church elders and at least two were not members of the churches listed beside their names.

All told, about 50 different groups were represented, rather than more than 80 congregations as initially implied, the review found.

Clinton spokesman Zac Wright said the campaign never claimed the endorsements represented separate congregations and knew all along that some came from the same organization.

At least Obama can legitimately claim a miscommunication but for hillary to inflate by more than half...that is absurd!

57. you should understand that black churches usually have several ministers assisting 1 pastor
who is also a minister. Religious ministries and outreach groups aren't congregations but still they can be headed by ordained ministers. For example, my mother is the Minister of Christian Education for her church. She's not the pastor but she's responsible for all levels of indoctrination from Bible Study to Sunday School, which makes her a religious leader.

Ministers are allowed to marry and an ordained minister may not be practicing - may indeed be simply a church elder. Two incorrect church affiliations out of 90 - the one error the reporter specified - is a 2.2% error rate. 'At least' is conjecture, not reporting, and implies the 'review' of that list was less than thorough.

Comparing 'actual groups' versus 'implied congregations' makes me think that the reporter isn't from that area, doesn't really understand the culture, and is stretching to write something critical of HRC.

And this from me, a Kucinich supporter!! He acts the most Christian of them all (and we're supposed to know them by their deeds, not their words...)

I've voted (D) my entire life (except for Greens in local races) and this is really extraordinary for me because the Supreme Court is BIG ... from the IWR to K-L to this nastiness, well, let's just say you indeed are not the only one. I'm sure many Democrats are struggling with this as well. Fingers crossed we won't have to cross that bridge.

A. Nice bullshit poll questions.
B. Hillary's campaign has done the same thing
C. If you've ever worked a campaign, you'd know that this happens to everyone at some time. Cause some people think they know how to play power-broker but cannot make the commitment to one candidate.

Edited on Wed Dec-26-07 10:55 PM by Nailzberg
I'm excusing it because it is a not a real issue.

It wasn't an issue when Hillary's campaign was duped by some ministers, and it's not an issue now. Because as I said, this kind of thing happens all the time and it isn't happening because the campaigns are being dishonest. It's happening because some people want to be everyone's best friend, so they tell more than one campaign that they have their support.

However, the OP seems to feel this is campaign fraud by Obama, then the same standard should be applied to Clinton.

56. Like Endorsements Mean Anything?
The best endorsement a candidate can get is one friend telling another...not some "celebrity" or "community leader". If anything I'm suspect of endorsements as I expect there is some quid pro quo that goes along with it.

Investigate an endorsement? Ahhh...more noise of the silly season. It isn't a legal document or contract...so where's the crime?

While I find the sniping, astroturfing and political theatrics here amusing, I'll be glad when the primaries are over.
