Is there a site like DU where commenters aren't allowed
to repeat patently false "information" about fellow Democrats and where thoughtful discussion is encouraged?

I've been addicted to DU since early 2004 but, dang, any post I read about any of our candidates these days quickly devolves into take-no-prisoners warfare.

I not only don't want to read these distortions, I don't want to be associated with the candidates these people claim to support - ever.

So is there a fast-moving, up-to date, intelligent site somewhere I can go when the swarmers are out?

Thanks.

It's not as bad this year as it was in 2003. It's relatively milder, indeed.

20. I guess that was kind of callous of me.
Get it? Callous? ;)

Sorry for the "thicker skin" thing. Seriously though, at least in the primary forum, it's not as bad as it was in 2003. It was truly heinous in 2003.

There is one place called something like political hotwire (something like that) where some DUers have gone. Just looked it up...Here it is: http://www.politicalhotwire.com/ I've never posted there. Righties post there, too, and after my one excursion into a forum for righties and lefties, I learned that I'm better off at DU--because on their worst day, even the vilest Democrat at DU isn't as vile as some at those bipartisan forums.

51. The first US batch sold out before it even arrived in the store..
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-absinthe_webdec22,1,1604335.story

Its not known when it will make it to the rest of the country. The distributors won't even have any more St George in until next month, and it's said they're already preordered. Other distilleries are rushing to catch up. Lines around the block, people standing in line for hours.. so I just ordered mine from www.absintheonline.com. Remember the prices are in Euros, against our weak dollar. Shipping is about five business days. PM me if you want more info. There is a fantastic forum where you can read up on different types of absinthe, how to drink it, where to order, etc.

http://wormwoodsociety.org/forums/index.php?act=idx

Enjoy !

53. You already found WS!
I just PM'd you the link but I am glad to see you've already found them :)

Actually, absintheonline.com is exchanged in British Pounds so it is a bit more expensive that the Euro exchange. The shipping was excellent though and the USPS dropped off my order on a Sunday.

Absinthe.de is the German distributer and they exchange in Euros. I placed an order through them on a Wednesday night and my order was at my door on Friday. Germany to Florida in 2 days! That was amazing.

I'm really curious. I was told back in the 70's that Absinthe contained opiates. From what I just read, I saw no information on that at all. Let us know whether you like it or not when you get it.

But it's gotten here more like a group of people sitting at a sidewalk cafe having a spirited political discussion, when various others keep driving by shouting out slogans and calling names and honking their horns to the point that the discussion is drowned out by all the noise.

That's a rather apt description of this place as of late.

I think if you have a little patience and wait until after the primaries are over, DU will return to it's earlier standards of thoughtful analysis and opinion.

Until then, try to ignore the drive-by posters.... sure there's a lot of chaff lately, but there's still some seriously good wheat.

What happened to Conyers?? What is wrong with Pelosi? Are people really suggesting that we cannot discuss this?

Conyers lied to everyone. He said he would pursue impeachment just as soon as the Dems took power in 2006.

Why should we believe by electing more Dems, we will actually get anywhere? I suggest the only way the Dems will make progress is by electing NEW DEMOCRATS who follow the Constitution, who believe in the ideals of the party.

54. The song remains the same: right-leaning left disagrees with true left, which is deemed "far" left
Even though it's not a matter of being too liberal: genuinely liberal ideas and philosophy can often sound bizarre and weak to the average American. It is an affront to those of the rightist mentality, especially those who are unable to concede that many of their perceptions are indeed just that as routine exposure to rightist ideals works on two levels: diminishing genuine opposition while creating an unreality which instructs such personalities to believe otherwise.

These are usually the ones who support corporatist dems, and not liberal dems. They won't however lend any credence to what I've just outlined, and will instead insist they are merely being "practical," "reasonable," when in reality, if you communicate with them and really listen, you'll often find that they are very much so opposed to the genuine left ... or conversely, aspire to those properties, but foolishly believe that the corporatist dem media persona they've been wooed by likewise represents such qualities.

That's really what much of the disagreements, and hence, fiery political arguments here are rooted in. Pro corporate, right wing elements have worked diligently for the past three decades on every cultural front, and completely taking over the mainline media, while simultaneously castigating the apparatus as being "liberal," was their greatest coup over the public mind. The result is painfully obvious: dems and "liberals" who are shifted to the right without understanding how or why, and who often become enraged when blatant illustrations of this surface i.e. the obediently espoused D.K. "can't win" because "not enough people will vote for him," etc

What the right has done so successfully is to coax their political opposition toward similar aims and mindset, but with enough cosmetic differences as to allow the manipulated to remain feeling as though they're opposing the aims, which in many instances they've been culturally coerced into supporting without calling it by name.
