Poll question: Not asking who, but simply have you decided on a candidate?
Edited on Fri Dec-28-07 12:43 PM by RiverStone
We all enjoy a healthy debate and finally we are a week out of Iowa. The political landscape is about to shift decidedly favorably toward some, and probably will eliminate quite a few others from contention. And with all our spirited discussions on DU, are you settled with your choice?

QUESTION: Have you made up your mind regarding who you will vote (or caucus for) in the Democratic primaries?

:kick: :kick: :kick: :kick:

On EDIT: As an aside, if for some reason you don't plan to participate - mind sharing why the heck not?

4. Yeah, but I'm a realist.
I know the guy I want can't win against the Big Money.
I'll cast my vote for Bill Richardson on February 5th, and then back whoever our nominee is.

6. Seconded
Even now it's too soon--too much can change--even with the early Iowa caucus.

7. I do not plan to participate in the Dem primaries.
While Washington has primaries, the state Democratic party has declared (as they have ever since Washington went to a primary system) that they will totally ignore the results. Thus, participating in the Dem primary is a pointless waste of time.

I will, however, be giving my unwavering support to ________________ in the state caucuses. :patriot:

Hi Techbear :hi:

Also a Washingtonian and am curious when you say: that they will totally ignore the results...

Where did you read that? I'd be very motivated to call the Dem state party office or my Rep. and get clarity (or complain).

Thanks!

11. Ask and ye shall receive
First off, I was incorrect in saying that the Dem Party has always ignored the primary results. This situation occured in the 2000 election cycle. The state legislature changed the date of the state primary to the last Tuesday in Februrary in 1999, setting the date for the 2000 primary on February 29. National party rules, then as now, forbid any state from selecting their delegates to the National Convention by caucus before Iowa and by primary before New Hampshire. The state party declared in 1999 that they would consider the primary to be "non-binding" and instead hold caucuses on the first Tuesday of March (March 7, 2000), a week after Iowa.

In 2004, the state Legislature cancelled the Presidential primary altogether, as the Democrats had again declared the primary would be non-binding and the Republicans already had an announced candidate. This saved the state more than six million dollars in related election costs. The primary looks like it will be held again in 2008, as the state Republican party selects half of the delegates to their national convention based on the primary results. The Democratic Party has already announced that the 2008 primary would again be non-binding.

As for this year, the state primary will be held on Tuesday, February 19th (link). The Democratic Caucuses, where all the state's delegates to National will be selected, will be held on Saturday, February 9th (link.) By the time the primary is held in 2008, the make-up of our delegation will already have been determined and the primary will, in effect, be a worthless excercise.

12. appreciate it...
Non-binding does not exactly inspire participation; though at least some discussion.

peace~ :)

13. Kucinich is the only one with credibility
How can anyone not know what Bush was trying to pull with the IWR. There was no evidence of WMD's- NONE! They were caught in a really lousy forgery. Don't our Senators do any research. And Obama- against the war but votes for the funding? We need to fight for the person who has the intelligence and courage to turn this country around.
