Of course had she not had papers for someone to be late with there would be those saying to deport her because her working for what she could get might have lowered some Merican's wages.

To file for asylum an applicant must file within one year of arrival barring exigent individual circumstances or a significant change in circumstances in the emigre country. If her attorney missed a filing deadline, she ought to be able to demonstrate this. I don't understand her being detained as she doesn't seem a likely flight risk.

Curiously, we give temporary protected status to aliens from Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras as well as Liberia, Somalia, and a few others, like Cuba (meaning we don't ordinarily deport them). Apparently it's OK to ship Zimbabweans back to Mugabe's Zimbabwe. A girl like this one would certainly be an asset to this country. Irrelevant under the Immigration Laws, however.
