This has been one sucky start to the year. I broke a rib a couple of days ago when my short little self with my short little arms was trying to retrieve something from the back of the washer and strained against its edge. So already, I'm in pain and crabby. The icemaker broke, as did the water softener (essential here in rural America), both big ticket items to repair. I'm worried about this month's budget and that makes me anxious. The phone seems to ring nonstop with canned campaign ads and campaign callers, and that's making me crabbier because it is disruptive of life now.
Well, we've had solid bad weather and it is absolutely frigid here now. I couldn't grocery shop for more than two weeks and so I made my Wednesday trip into town 20+ miles away to pick up supplies. Spent $151 dollars on almost nothing, so that made me anxious. After loading the groceries into the trunk of the car, I became preoccupied when I noticed that the front left tire of my care looked awfully low in air but wasn't flat. So my anxiety goes up as I worry about making it home on that tire and I head back home.
As I'm turning into the road on which our home is located, out of the corner of my eye, I notice that my purse is not in the seat next to me. I stop the car and go back to check the trunk for it. Not to be found. Not under the seat either. Nothing. I need to get back to town Fast. I turn around and start driving back, speeding and worrying all the way. It occurs to me that if I get stopped, I'll have no identification. In my purse are my SS card, my driver's license, checkbook, credit cards, health insurance card, and voter registration card. I get stuck behind someone driving 45 mph and by now I'm talking out loud to myself. I'm hoping that it is in the grocery cart, the only place it could have been, and that no one found it or that an honest person found it and turned it in at the store.
I finally make it into the store's parking lot and return to the parking spot I used when there. Glanced over, and spot my purse in the cart where it had been left. I almost passed out from relief. Checking my bag, I realize that nothing has been taken. My identification and financial instruments are all there. I made it home and put things away. I'm sitting here telling you all about this because I almost lost my chance to participate in the caucus tomorrow night because of something stupid.
Iowans, keep track of your purses and get your tires checked. We have a civic duty to attend to tomorrow night. See you there!
