How I almost didn't get to caucus...and it only takes little things.
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 12:40 PM by Skidmore
This has been one sucky start to the year. I broke a rib a couple of days ago when my short little self with my short little arms was trying to retrieve something from the back of the washer and strained against its edge. So already, I'm in pain and crabby. The icemaker broke, as did the water softener (essential here in rural America), both big ticket items to repair. I'm worried about this month's budget and that makes me anxious. The phone seems to ring nonstop with canned campaign ads and campaign callers, and that's making me crabbier because it is disruptive of life now.

Well, we've had solid bad weather and it is absolutely frigid here now. I couldn't grocery shop for more than two weeks and so I made my Wednesday trip into town 20+ miles away to pick up supplies. Spent $151 dollars on almost nothing, so that made me anxious. After loading the groceries into the trunk of the car, I became preoccupied when I noticed that the front left tire of my care looked awfully low in air but wasn't flat. So my anxiety goes up as I worry about making it home on that tire and I head back home.

As I'm turning into the road on which our home is located, out of the corner of my eye, I notice that my purse is not in the seat next to me. I stop the car and go back to check the trunk for it. Not to be found. Not under the seat either. Nothing. I need to get back to town Fast. I turn around and start driving back, speeding and worrying all the way. It occurs to me that if I get stopped, I'll have no identification. In my purse are my SS card, my driver's license, checkbook, credit cards, health insurance card, and voter registration card. I get stuck behind someone driving 45 mph and by now I'm talking out loud to myself. I'm hoping that it is in the grocery cart, the only place it could have been, and that no one found it or that an honest person found it and turned it in at the store.

I finally make it into the store's parking lot and return to the parking spot I used when there. Glanced over, and spot my purse in the cart where it had been left. I almost passed out from relief. Checking my bag, I realize that nothing has been taken. My identification and financial instruments are all there. I made it home and put things away. I'm sitting here telling you all about this because I almost lost my chance to participate in the caucus tomorrow night because of something stupid.

Iowans, keep track of your purses and get your tires checked. We have a civic duty to attend to tomorrow night. See you there!

1. Phew! If it makes you feel better, I did the same thing once.
Got all the way home, had to drive all the way back. I too was lucky; my purse was turned in to the store in tact.

Your worry about voting is noble; go get 'em!

2. SO glad your purse was there!
May that be a sign that everything else will be going your way from now on.

4. whew...quite a week you're having
I'm in total sympathy with the broken rib. There's probably no other injury that's so uncomfortable and takes so long to heal.

I can't wait to hear about your caucus experience - !

5. I, too, have left my purse in the cart and driven on home.
Have also left whole carts full of groceries standing in front of the store while I drove on home, so I can relate. You have my sympathy. Our phone, too, is ringing off the hook. Last one was Elizabeth Edwards, and I listened to her message all the way through. I'll be at my caucus tomorrow evening, supporting John and thinking positive.

6. You are not that far away...
we're straight out west of IC. Howdy, neighbor.

This is exciting, but I'm ready for everyone to move on to another state. Happy caucusing!

7. Good to hear that your purse was still there!
I keep my SS card at home in my little fire proof/ waterproof safe, since there's no reason to really carry it around unless you just got a new job.

Good luck at the caucus tomorrow and hopefully Friday everything will turn back to normal.

8. You left your purse in the cart?
You silly woman. You're supposed to leave it on top of the car and drive off, like I did. That way you have zero hope of retrieving your important papers and cards. Get with the program! :hi:

9. Lost my wallet at a ski resort
The service desk clerk said, "Well, you've got your equipment and lift ticket. Why don't you just go skiing and come back at the end of the day? It will have been turned in by then." I was skeptical, but she did have a point. So that's what I did--and sure enough, when I returned to the desk at 4PM, there was my wallet, totally intact and just in time for happy hour!
