The hell with Britney Spears
"Britney checks into rehab"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070221/ap_on_en_mu/people_britney_spears;_ylt=AmwlfJ7yBBx6sW.CHo2EwLis0NUE

THIS is a headline? She shaved her head. Begging pardon, but so fucking what! Can she still walk on both legs? Did losing her hair, unlike shrapnel, cause brain damage? Her children still have a mother, (albeit children raised by nannies) and that mother still has a job. As per Nance Greggs's post earlier, why have the priorities of American news gone down the drain? Who in their right mind can feel sympathy with this talented, albeit spoiled child-woman, when many others her age, and younger, face REAL problems? (i.e., limbs blown off, kids losing parents, parents losing their kids) Have raw statistics gone out of proportion? (300 million people mean that .001% dead in a war based on lies and obsfucation pale in importance to a pop star's hair)

My only faith lies in the true American's ability to ferret out the truth.

Eventually.

19. "We" ?
I ceased relying upon the U.S. media. . . when I was a kid I think. It was then I realized it was sensationalist garbage.

I'm reminded of something I read a long while back (can't guarantee it's accuracy), "By the age of one, most Americans have learned to walk, and say a few words. In contrast, by the age of one, most toddlers in India have learned to pick undigested oats out of manure."

This is what the United States Media has become like, sifting through large amounts of waste for the tiniest wholesome morsel, TGFKO. If not for the internet and news outlets from other countries, I believe I would have degenerated into an apathetic, ignorant repuke.

3. You say that as if Ms. Spears controls what is 'news'.
Your aim seems misplaced.

To hell with our modern-day Hearsts, is my suggestion.

5. Seems like only yesterday the press obsessed on Clara Bow. . .
and here we are, a million "It" girls later, and the press continues what it will always do while concerned citizens decry the frivolity.

Want serious news? Read serious press. Otherwise, the news is a succession of Evelyn Nesbitts.

Clara Bow

Evelyn Nesbitt

7. Man, Clara Bow was HAWT!
Girl just had It, knowwhuddimean? And that Evelyn Nesbitt, that's a woman worth shooting a famous architect over.

I'm with you; I can't get too exercised when people complain about TV news. It's TV, y'all; if it were serious journalism it wouldn't need pictures. You don't see a bunch of Britney stories in the New York Times.

6. First, Clinton makes news with a haircut, now Britney.
I guess the only difference is that Big Dawg didn't check himself into rehab afterwards. Or maybe the rehab bit was a special being run by the hair salon.

Shave and a rehab..... two bits!!

8. I'm in my "right mind"...
...and I feel sympathy for her.

Take it from someone who's been there, Patriought: A breakdown warranting rehab is most definitely a REAL problem. And fuck you for suggesting that it's not!

My compassion for Britney Spears in no way lessens my compassion for the wounded troops, the starving, the motherless, and so forth. There's plenty for all who are in need.

To claim someone is unworthy or undeserving of compassion is to reduce the humanity of that person--AND YOUR OWN. Don't do it. It's the first step towards becoming capable of killing.

It's a tragedy when anyone suffers.

 to/for you, because even though aspects of your post pissed me off, I understand that your true feelings are of frustration and sadness at the suffering in the world...you're a good person, with a good heart.

13. Welcome to DU!
I really don't care for Britney at all and that doesn't lessen my compassion...especially for animals. She is one of celebrities like Madonna, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, etc. that I hate to see/read about/hear and get sick of. That's just me.

16. Could you be more specific?
Which is it, "Fuck you", or "you have a good heart?"

I'd apoligize for touching a nerve, but that's on you. At no place in my post did I suggest that entering rehab was not indicative of a real problem.

To reiterate, the hell with Britney Spears. Whatever "problems" she has, her position in life gave her a plethora of choices, and she chose this.

How many soldiers have returned from Iraq suffering PTSD, and now suffer substance abuse problems? They can't afford clinics in Beverly Hills. They get roach-infested building 18 at Walter Reed.

I'll save my sympathy for them.

Begging to differ. I'm having trouble squaring that claim with your earlier words:

"Who in their right mind can feel sympathy with this talented, albeit spoiled child-woman, when many others her age, and younger, face REAL problems?"

Sounds to me very much like a suggestion that entering rehab is not indicative of a real problem.

Perhaps you can clarify.

38. I'll let Bob Herbert explain
Maybe this will clarify it for you...

http://welcome-to-pottersville.blogspot.com/
(might be necessary to scroll down)

Paris Hilton and Britney Spears were on the cover of Newsweek last week with the headline “The Girls Gone Wild Effect.” When you turned to the story, there was a full-page picture of the former best friends, with a glassy-eyed Britney looking for all the world like a younger version of Anna Nicole Smith.

<snip>

The nation may be at war, and Al Qaeda may be gearing up for a rematch. But that’s no fun, not when Britney is shaving off her hair and Jennifer Aniston is reported to have a new nose and the thrill-a-minute watch over Anna Nicole’s remains is still the hottest thing on TV.

<snip>

I'm not interested in bantering back and forth with you. Whatever issues you imply to have had with rehab, it pales in comparison with war. Just as Britney's issues pale in comparison. If you fail to understand that, then you need to reassess your values.

Square that.

41. That clarified absolutely nothing.
A full day later, and your best response is to change the subject from your own contradictory words to what you perceive are my values. Stick to things you know about, or go jump to conclusions somewhere else. I don't feel like being goaded today.

Besides, it's hard to "banter back and forth" with someone who can't decide on what to banter about.

as far as I know has nothing to do with the troops.

I feel for her for the mess that she's in.

I feel nothing but contempt for her that she's a Republican.

And I support the troops 100%.

That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

21. Agreed, my heart is big enough for all of them
the poor, sick, elderly, orphans, wounded soldiers, and yes even celebrities who feel emotionally and psychologically vulnerable for whatever reasons. Wealth doesn't matter. A good person with a good heart would feel compassion for anyone whether it's a poor black orphan in Louisiana whose family was killed during the hurricane or a wealthy white Louisiana pop star who faces public humiliation every day.

When will they run out of envelope to shred? When will wit be required for writing comedy, drama, et al, instead of shock-jock moments?

20. She's a moron.
"I think we should just trust our president with every decision he makes." Britney Spears, 2003.

Sorry, I know I'm a terrible, mean person etc., but I cannot actually empathize with anyone as completely fucking stupid as Britney Spears. She represents everything that's fucked up about America's dumbass obsession with celebrity. Only in America do we idolize pinheads like Spears and revile our great poets, artists and intellectuals. I'm sick of that shit.

I doubt her stupid opinion was much different than 85% of American teenagers at the time. We're not all political geeks, or else the country probably wouldn't be in this whole Bush mess in the first place.

29. Call me a rebel...
I don't know, atman--I grew up in the Vietnam/Watergate era, and as a teenager I was pretty fucking politically aware; it was hard not to be, considering I lived in an Ohio college town in 1970, and still remember armed National Guard troops on the streets when they closed the university, post Kent State. Seems to me anybody who isn't a moron ought to know enough to question authority, but maybe I'm just a dinosaur.

32. I'm a Viet Nam era guy myself. It proves my point...
You and I are the "political geeks" I spoke of. I was totally involved as a 15 year old. I protested, the whole nine yards. But today...BushCo learned well from the mistakes of the past. First, don't ever, ever (ever, under any circumstance) tell the truth. They tried almost to be honest during Viet Nam by actually releasing dead and wounded figures, which Uncle Walter (Cronkite) would show every night, like a sports score.

Viet Nam: 102 dead
US: 47 dead

WOO HOO!! Dance in the end zone!

I know it all too well. You and I are the political "geeks" (or is it "wonks"?) that I speak of. We're into it, we follow it...but believe me, most teenagers -- most -- don't. They could give a fuck.

And that is by design, that is the whole point of the embedded reporters and "Green Zone" reporters...Viet Nam proved that allowing the people to see what was being done in their name was a very bad strategy if your plan is perpetual war.

37. The hell with the whore media
This Spears lady possibly has some mental health issues (post partum (sp? depression? drug addictions?). She needs some assistance, and some privacy to sort out her private health care needs.

I am disgusted with the media dragging us all into her private affairs. And with the media making money off of the private health care crisis of a new mother.

This media should return the circle of hell that belched them out. They are worse than useless.
