David Brooks just intimated (to Imus) that Walter Reed is the patients' fault.
Brooks asked: Why didn't they complain until now?

At least Imus called him on it.

Brooks said, "I knew I shouldn't have come on the show this morning."

GGGRRR!

GI Denied Health Care After Speaking Out
By Mark Benjamin
United Press International

Tuesday 02 March 2004

Congress, veterans groups, and the press should immediately launch a full investigation into this Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran's allegation he suffered retaliation from the military for speaking with reporters about substandard military healthcare. A series of three UPI articles about this major scandal are posted here. They describe the "squalor" more than 1,000 wounded, ill, or injured service members were forced to endure while on "medical hold." -- Veterans for Common Sense

**which is why their families haven't spoken out, either

5. I always hated David Brooks, but now...
... Sorry, I can't even post what I'm feeling about Brooks right now.

Too outraged.

9. I will support Al Franken, but three of his friendships, one being
Brooks, really, really bother me. Franken's heart and openness is something I have to understand first. Maybe Brooks isn't as stinky as I always thought he was, maybe I'm not seeing something, but this report has set me back again.

11. There is no greater friend to the vets
than Al Franken. It is too bad that more of us can't have an open mind, and open heart like Al Franken. I don't care who he considers a friend cuz I know that bond would never over rule his concern for our vets.

I don't understand it neither, but I admire him for being able to do it.

talking about his parents, Paul Wellstone, the vets and the soldeirs - it's genuine. I can relate to him. No one could ever accuse him of being phony.

Perhaps I was ticked because I didn't want to listen to Brooks and some of the others. I spend the time on Air America because I want to hear Democrats contribute and analyze and like DU - figure out the real agenda behind the agenda pushed on us by corporate networks - the ones Brooks works for. I consider Brooks a total right wing pusher - why give him and others air time. Yeah, in writing this - I think that's what I resented. I have no right to judge his friendships, but I didn't want to listen to them on my time.

However, because he is and has been forming his platform, I'll keep watching and listening, and hopefully, cheering, if not more.

13. Have you noticed how he says everything with a smile?
It's his idea of being "pleasant" I guess. It drives me nuts.

Well, fellow texan (I'm a New Englander now but I was born and raised there, not displaced tho), let's hope karma takes care of Brooks. I would like to see him having profound regrets some day and spending his days in service to his fellow human, in places like Walter Reed, as a volunteer. He needs to do penance.

3. Yeah, those lazy-ass veterans
Just lying around in bed all day long, hooked up to IVs and stuff. Pick up a paint brush there, soldier!

Although how would Brooks know the patients hadn't complained until now? Did none of the folks there ever speak up to him during his weekly visits which I'm sure he makes as a troop-supporting flag-waving Republican? Or was it, as I suspect, more likely yet another case of something that wasn't a political priority for the GOP when they held all the cards? Far more important to pass another round of tax cuts for the overrich, or meddle in the affairs of the Schiavo family.

8. Now that's efficiency for ya.
Just dust off the NOLA propaganda and change a few words and presto! Pack of lies du jour, ready to be echoed by the obedient media.

10. "No one said anything until now"
That was his arguement. Why haven't any of the trrops said anything before now? Maybe Dana Priest was the first one who listened. To me it is more damning of the press for not covering the vets who have been screaming about their treatment in the past. One visit to IAVA.org will show that they have been complaining about VA care from day one.

He also brought up why Hilary or Kerry haven't said anything, "They are in & out of Walter Reed all the time". One of the points that Priest makes is her investigation was covert, not using the glossy PR tours the VA puts together for announced visitors. Guess what, Brooks she is a JOURNALIST and doesn't blindly repeat the press releases given to her.
