Um... Any Fellow Californians Feeling The Storm Right About Now ???

It was raining like hell a while ago, then the wind really came up;

There's just a windy break right now, but here's the second wave about to hit.

Yowza... all sorts of wonderful noises outside in the dark.

:hide:

Stay safe, y'all.

And it's 17 degrees out here in Brooklyn. No sympathy.

The projected totals in the mountains and foothills are downright scary -- up to 10 inches. That's saturation -- if I lived in La Conchita I'd be heading for an out of town friend to stay with.

But it's nearly 2 a.m. and no raindrops on Goleta just yet.

Stay safe and dry all you folks who are already experiencing the deluge.

It used to make me nervous whenever I saw it whipping around on windy days. Fortunately it fell away from the house. But it's blocking the sidewalk. I checked to make sure no one was under it.

The wind gusts through the trees sound almost like a small jet is passing through.

Wind gusts over 60 mph have occurred around Redding and Red Bluff and will likely move into the southern Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley through noon. Moderate to heavy precipitation will continue over the interior of northern California ahead and along the cold front. Snow levels range from 3500 to 4000 feet in Shasta County...and may begin to lower behind the cold front this afternoon. Snow levels over the Sierra Nevada will range from 5500 to 6000 feet.

48. RSOE has a long, descriptive account of Calif.'s wild weather - Wow!

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng

Up and down the state, residents braced themselves for potentially devastating arctic storms that hovered off the coast early Friday. The front was expected to lash California with fierce winds, heavy rain and paralyzing snowfall with forecasters warning the extreme weather would last through the weekend. Home owners rushed to fill sandbags to protect houses lying beneath fire-ravaged hillsides in Southern California, while Northern California residents scurried to stock up on last-minute provisions as the first-and likely weaker-wave of rain, wind and snow began hitting the state Thursday.

In the eastern Sierra ski town of Mammoth Lakes, resident Barbara Sholle went to the local Vons supermarket after receiving a call from the town's reverse-911 system. She waited an hour to pay for her groceries amid a crush of residents. "People were waiting in line for shopping carts," she said. A storm that was expected to pound Southern California with 4 inches of rain in the valleys and 9 inches or more in mountain areas worried residents living in areas burned by last fall's wildfires. "The last rain we had, it all went under my foundation and I don't like that. It was flowing under my house," said Cindy Darling, a receptionist at the Lake Arrowhead Chamber of Commerce who got sandbags from the local fire department to put above her house. "Everything up here's on a hill, so you have to do something."

The storm system, which began dumping rain and snow Thursday in parts of Northern California, brought high wind warnings along the coast and gusts of up to 50 mph at Sacramento International Airport, according to the National Weather Service. Power outages, damaged electrical lines and downed trees were reported in the Sacramento area by Thursday night. Nearly 2,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers to the north and east of Sacramento were without power as a result of 20 outages, spokeswoman Susan Simon told the Sacramento Bee. Ocean tides were expected to swell to 30 feet, prompting the U.S. Coast Guard to caution boaters to remain in port. The U.S. Forest Service issued an avalanche warning for Mount Shasta, in the Cascade Range in far Northern California, while the weather service issued a rare blizzard advisory for the Sierra Nevada. "If you don't have to go out this weekend, it might be a nice weekend to stay at home after the holidays," said Frank McCarton, chief deputy director of the California Office of Emergency Services.

The state plans to activate its emergency operations centers in Los Alamitos and Sacramento on Friday and has been coordinating with the California National Guard, the Coast Guard and local authorities. Riverside and San Bernardino counties have deployed swift-water rescue teams in case torrential rains bring flash floods and mudslides. In Truckee, north of Lake Tahoe, the American Red Cross planned to open a shelter Friday for motorists stranded by the snow. The weather service was forecasting snow levels dropping to 4,000 feet along the western Sierra, with 10 feet of snow possible at elevations above 6,500 feet. The forecasts failed to deter one group from attempting to ski all California ski resorts in just four days. Two skiers, a snowboarder and a ski biker have completed runs on 18 of the state's 28 resorts since Jan. 1.

"They are not putting it on hold," said Julia Vitarello, spokeswoman for the group Across the Atlas. "The idea is to work through it and make it work." Wind gusts forced some Tahoe-area ski resorts to shut down some or all of their ski lifts on Thursday, and gusts in some areas were expected to top 100 mph Friday and Saturday. "We'll operate as much of the resort as we're able to," said Russ Pecoraro, spokesman for Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe. In the Sacramento Valley, power crews prepared for wind gusts up to 65 mph, the strongest in a decade. The National Weather Service issued a high-wind advisory through Friday afternoon, with hurricane-force gusts expected to pummel communities along the northern coast. Residents in low-lying areas of the Central Valley were warned to get sandbags and expect 3 to 6 inches of rain, enough to swell creeks to flood stage.

The rain is not expected to overwhelm the state's major rivers, in part because upstream reservoirs are at low levels after last year's dry winter and spring, said Don Strickland, a spokesman for the California Department of Water Resources. The heaviest precipitation—and possibly the most rain Southern California has seen in three years—was expected Friday night and Saturday. Some south-facing slopes could get downpours totaling 15 inches, including some areas particularly prone to mudslides after wildfires)

I'm sitting here watching the trees whip around in the wind. If/when it lets up I may walk down the block to check on the creek. I remember years with heavy rains, but not this much wind. The cat is not happy.

Local news just announced "don't even think about going to the Sierras".

:hi: :loveya:

Things in my neighborhood started hitting the fan this morning around 5:00 am. Lots of rain and wind -- it hasn't stopped yet. Lost power briefly at home, saw a pole transformer blow up in front of me while at a fourway stop, lots of smaller street trees down on 3rd Street, and power was out for a bit when I got to work. Sitting in my loaded truck at a stop, I was rocking back and forth like a very l-a-r-g-e person was jumping up and down on my hood -- the wind is pretty wicked!

I am sooo worried about Golden Gate Park, and especially the newly-refurbished Conservatory of Flowers. :( These storms are terribly hard on the park -- we lose so many of the old trees to the wind.

Talked to Mom this morning -- she is okay, just rain on the Valley floor for now, but they are worried about mudslides from the Angora fire. She is hunkered down for the duration.

Stay safe up there and keep us posted!

I am sitting on the fourth floor of a brick building that is one city block long and I am actually feeling the building move with the bigger wind gusts!! We have two, long banks of skylights and I am waiting for one of them to blow in -- I have been hearing debris hitting them HARD for over two hours now.

74. Rockin' and rollin' at the Pyramid!
Just heard from a friend that her office in the Transamerica (aka pyramid) building is closing down for the rest of the day -- the building is getting battered and swaying like crazy. The buildings here are built to move during an earthquake, so high winds can really set them off.

I was on one of the upper floors of the Pyramid during a mild windstorm and the elevator bank area was creaking and groaning up a storm -- there was a definite sensation of the building swaying underfoot.

66. interior coastal range-Lake Co.: serious rain, winds have gone down
It has been raining fairly solidly since yesterday. The winds came up after midnight and seem to have stopped for the moment. Nothing else to report. Clear Lake has quite a way to go before we have to worry about flooding.

Snow level might be a problem for the higher areas tomorrow. Would not recommend using Hwy 29 over Mt. St. Helena, if at all possible. Hwy 175 near Hopland is flooded.

87. In Reno, it's rained all day, turning to snow about 4 pm -- been snowing since
We've had steady snow since, with just a bit of reprieve a while ago when I saw some stars peaking through the clouds. From the looks of the satellite pic you posted, we're in for another round soon. Some reports on line are indicating that we're having thunder and lightening mixed with snow. I can hear all kinds of bumps and thuds outside, but I can't tell if it's wind or thunder. Power is off and on. If it goes off for an extended period, I'll venture out to go get my elderly mother who lives down the hill from us. We can all bundle together under blankets by the fire.

A young woman just missed getting severely injured or killed at the office I work at in Sacramento. A couple of hours after I posted in this thread about the wind picking up, she passed through our parking lot to deliver printouts to our dept. and boom, just seconds after she passed, a HUGE tree limb blew across and landed on the path where she had just been. Needless to say, after I reported that, we were instructed to stay indoors and when the wind let-up, allowed to go home.

100. Hey shanti !!!
Yep... I was off-line for a good 14 hrs. What's weird, is that while our block has power now, the block across the street still does not.

A neighbor ran an extension cord form his attic, to his bud's house across the street. Attic, to pine tree, to house.

Now THAT is being a good neighbor, LOL!!!

Glad you are back with us, and safe.

Cheers!
