Dallas Morning News Blasted for 'Texan of the Year'
DALLAS - When editorial writers at The Dallas Morning News chose the illegal immigrant as the newspaper's Texan of the Year, they expected some criticism. But not this: 800 blog postings and more than 150 letters to the editor blasting the decision.

Some of the critics threatened to cancel subscriptions or pressure advertisers to stop doing business with the paper.

"What an asinine article!!!" exclaimed one reader.

"What part of stupid are you guys that support illegal aliens? This puts us ALL in danger," another wrote. :eyes:

Editorial writer Rodger Jones said he was "surprised at the nastiness" of the backlash, some of which came from readers who had only seen the editorial's headline.

The Texan of the Year designation, announced in Sunday's paper, has been an annual year-end editorial page feature since 2003.

1. Texans who don't know their own history.
I guess they think Texas popped into existence in 1833, populated only by Europeans. In 1845, feeling the need to expand, they allowed the United States to join them - at the same time refusing Mexico's request to do the same.

2. Remember the Alamo!
I will as a great Mexican victory against the illegal insurgents.

The DMN doesn't get a lot right; but it did in naming the undocumented worker as the Texan of the year.

3. They referred to an illegal immigrant as a "Texan"...
and they're surprised at the backlash? Sheesh...

I mean, people get upset when Time magazine gives the Man of the Year title to somebody like Saddam or Hitler, but at least they don't call them "American of the Year".

6. Hey...
illegal immigrants are as much American as any jerk who didn't do anything except get squirted out here.

Moreso, I'd think, since they're living the American dream.

7. I didn't say I agree with the readers...
I just said that the editors shouldn't have been surprised at the backlash.

8. Well of course.
A bunch of whiny racists are going to get upset.

And I'm sure the paper knew that.

9. They are Americans. As are Central Americans, as are South Americans...
...perhaps you have "Americans" confused with United States citizenship.
