What did the Rs do when crossing over in Iowa? Any strategy to it?

There is a long history in politics of cross-voting the other party in the primary towards strategic ends. Typically, it is a 'chose your opponent' strategy, to augment by some means the chances of your own candidate in the final election. Often, it is an attempt to unseat an incumbent in the primary.

oops, that's right, this year none of their candidates meet the 'electable' bar. The increasingly shrill writings from the right about how they might not only lose both the president - but also the "thin minorities" (ala much larger dem margins) in congress indicate a growing recognition that the GOP has put themselves into a corner.

Think about what you would/will do this year? Would you cross over to vote for an opponent you want to run against and risk Clinton getting the Dem nod? (Or whoever else it is you hate the most).

Not me.

The GOP seems more freaked out over their choices than ours.
