Act against al-Qaida, Bush told
WASHINGTON, Feb. 21
(UPI) -- A GOP congressman has urged U.S. President Bush to act more forcefully against al-Qaida in Pakistan.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., the ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee of the U.S, House of Representatives, announced that he had sent a letter Tuesday to President George W. Bush urging him to push the Pakistani government to take more effective action against al-Qaida forces in the northwestern Pakistan tribal region of North Waziristan.
Hunter wrote that he was concerned about what he called " the very troubling development of al-Qaida's resurgence in the Pakistani tribal area of North Waziristan."
"It is clear that al-Qaida has found a safe haven in Pakistan where it is operating training camps for the purpose of carrying out strikes in Afghanistan and elsewhere," he wrote. "United States and allied forces can only secure Afghanistan, and prevail in Operation Enduring Freedom, if the al-Qaida havens in Pakistan are directly confronted.
"I am concerned that the Sept. 5, 2006, agreement between Pakistan and tribal elders in Waziristan is ineffective and complicating our mission in Afghanistan. This agreement exchanged an end to Pakistani military incursions into the tribal areas for a promise by the tribal leaders to expel militants from the border area.
