Party Over Country:25 Members Of Congress Who Criticized Escalation But Voted
25 Members Of Congress Who Criticized Escalation But Voted For It Anyway
Last week, Iraq war veteran and VoteVets founder Jon Soltz appealed for members of Congress to “put country above party” and vote against escalation in Iraq.

Majorities in both the House and Senate answered Soltz’s call. But at least 25 members of Congress caved to partisan pressure and voted in favor of escalation, despite having publicly criticized President Bush’s strategy in the weeks prior to the vote. Here are four examples:

Rep. Virginia Brown-Waite (R-FL): “It’s too little, too late, and should have been done a year ago. … I just get a feeling our country is being used.”

Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM): “I am not a supporter of a surge to do for the Iraqis what the Iraqis will not do for themselves.”

Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ): “I have little confidence that a surge in troop levels will change the situation in Iraq in any substantive fashion. It seems clear that the violence in Iraq is increasingly sectarian, and inserting more troops in this atmosphere is unlikely to improve the situation.

1. "I just get a feeling our country is being used.”
That is phucking classic. Our country brought this on itself, Virginia Brown-Waite.

And what exactly are Iraqis to "do for themselves" when their most basic of needs are not being met? High unemployment. Not to mention living every day with the fear of being blown up. At the risk of sound like Chandler Bing, could this war BE any more immoral? Putting the troops there and destroying Iraq was immoral, leaving them there is immoral, pulling them out and leaving innocent Iraqis to fend for themselves is immoral. What is the answer - how will this insanity stop?

2. Saw a clip of her on Countdown the other nite
Impersonating a 3rd rate comedian (Larry the Cable Guy) on the house floor.

"We have a wonderful saying in the south (she's originally from New York), we have to "git er done".

The woman is a disgrace.

3. Oh yeah, I remember cringing when I heard that...
just like I cringe when I see the bumper stickers. Didn't realize it was the esteemed congresswoman from Florida's 5th district. ;-)
