Is anyone having trouble with Firefox? |
|
It has been acting up on my computer for a couple weeks, and tonight I can't get it to open up at all.

Funny you ask, because I just had to close it down. It randomly does a weird thing where the apostrophe key opens the "quick find" function and you can't copy/paste.

The question mark key does that and it's likely directly below the apostrophe. Are you sure you didn't just hit the question mark instead? I can't type for shit, so I do that all the time. :)

Like if you go to your task list, is it listed as one of your processes? If you have multiple instances of Firefox.exe running, right-click, close them, then try again to open Firefox.
To get to your running processes, CTRL-ALT-Delete and click the processes tab (Win XP)

Check to see if there is a newer version and upgrade to it or you might try reinstalling over the existing install. Check the Firefox site FAQ's as well.

|
I have Firefox 2.0.0.11
When did you last update it?
Have you run a scan with Spybot S & D ?
Have you added anything new to it that may not be compatible? A new add-on?

My browser is open on my machine 24/7 (almost always logged onto DU).
I have some other sites needing a logon and I have no problem with them. Firefox remembers my logins and passwords just fine and there's never any drama at all.

I design web sites, so I use Safari and Firefox. Firefox does act a bit dodgy sometimes; quitting (sometimes force-quitting) and relaunching usually fixes it. My browser of choice is Safari.

|
I've deleted the prefs and reinstalled, but no improvement.
I switched for the neat plug-ins such as "Morning Coffee", but I'm moving my bookmarks back to Safari.
Also, I have an iPhone so I want my bookmarks synced between my PowerBook and my iPhone's Safari anyway.
MacHead from waaaaaay back.

I miss my tabs in Firefox. Another bizarre thing is in my email on Safari, I have to type the whole address but in Firefox, I only need to type a few letters and it remembers the address.

54. tabs and autofill are available in Safari as well |
|
Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 08:29 AM by NuttyFluffers
go to Safari -> Preferences
within this check the subcategories, shown by icons.
go to Tabs to alter tabs settings, most likely just activating tabs and the hotkey and that's it. (edit: Breeze answered part 1.1 of 'How to Tabs?' no need for me here! :D )
go to Autofill to alter autofill settings. check the marks that you find useful.
when you say your 'Safari Email' i'm assuming this most likely means using a website e-mail address, such examples being Hotmail, Yahoo mail, Google mail, your ISPs portal if they have one (AOL, COX, Comcast). to retain this information on such websites click the 3rd checkbox called "Other Forms". this will autofill common input in remembered fields, a la 'enter a few keys in the same box and the rest of it pops up'.
the other two involve autofilling w/ username/passwords, and using your info from *your own card* in Address Book. at any time you can edit any of these. for the 2nd and 3rd checkbox this would entail opening up a box w/ the websites list where such information is saved and then allowing you to delete the ones where you don't want such information to be 'remembered'. this can be useful to "undo" some autofilling; very easy to find and manage.
if you desire to avoid retaining such info on a browser you can use Safari -> Private Browsing to prevent Autofill and History from collecting info, routinely clean up Downloads box, and keep the Google Bar empty of previous searches. this is often useful if you're using a 3rd party machine, such as at a library or a friend's machine. makes life easier than having to do it yourself, if you like to maintain your privacy.
Firefox does have fun things like various wacky skins and neat 3rd party plug-ins, and it's still a great browser. but Safari is good, too.

14. Do you have any extensions installed? |
|
That may be the problem. One time I updated a theme and it killed tabbed browsing.
Functionality was only restored by deleting the theme.
To get FF back, you may want to open up the taskmanager (three different ways to open it: CTRL ALT DEL, right clicking on the panel and selecting taskmanager, or start->run and type in taskmgr) and see if a firefox process is running. If so, kill it and try starting FF again.

15. Nope - runs perfect here. Firefox is a bit of a memory hog so if you have |

crap like the Weather channel, AIM, or any one of a number of stealth-spy-ware apps running it will compete for resources and start up very very slowly.

I have version 2.0.0.11
Sometimes it stalls .... sometimes it crashes completely.
It doesn't seem to be a particular web page or plug-in that's triggering it - it's completely random.
I suspect it might be an extension, but I haven't had time to test them.

38. I have absolutely no trouble with FireFox except |
|
it keeps shutting down when I do census on Ancestry. For one thing FireFox automatically downloads and upgrade. And then tells me it has done it. We have the latest version, don't remember what it is, but for that one, we had to do it ourselves. My problem is my keyboard does not move fast enough and I loose my train of thought. Since my son uses this computer til he gets his new laptop, he doesn't mind and won't check out why it is so slow.

other than the occasional mistyped URL and I am having a hard time blaming that on Firefox... :-)
On a more serious note, it seems to be doing fine with the problem that the copy and paste function seems to have some issues. I cannot reliably reproduce the error, but it does happen from time to time.
