I always liked his statesmanship and humor. My primary is not coming up for a while, but my vote would have to go to Obama.
Edwards -- too slick, too much of a trial attorney for me to trust.
HRC -- outdated, nothing new or inventive. She leaves me cold.
I have concerns of Obama, but out of those three I'd have to go with him.

6. Just out of curiosity... are you saying that .... |
|
If you or a family member were wrongfully charged with a crime, or wrongfully sued by another, or wrongfully injured due to the negligence of another, that you WOULD NOT HIRE AN ATTORNEY to represent you or that family member because you don't trust trial attorneys?
I am just wondering if you really meant that you disqualified Edwards on the basis that he was a trial attorney.
(BTW I cannot count the number of parents who have made a similar statement to me BEFORE their child got into legal trouble, and then I was the first person they called when their child was charged or taken into custody).

Sorry, I have to laugh. I'm a trial attorney myself and I do medical negligence cases. Of course I would hire an attorney to represent me if I was injured through the fault of another.
My bias stems from knowing trial attorneys! Most are honorable men and women, but they are trained to act, trained to appear caring and decent, trained to tell a story. So when someone like him has earned millions of dollars as a trial attorney, and then goes for the power of politics, it makes me wonder how genuine he is. He may be the most decent man in the world; I don't know him. But I see a slick calculated guy when I see him. I may be totally wrong.
So no, it's not just that he's an attorney. Something about his presentation makes me wonder about his genuineness. And yes, I find his mansion distasteful while he prattles on about the plight of the poor.

11. I can only pass on my first hand experience regarding Edwards... |
|
I practiced law in the same city with him for approximately 20 years, and followed his career as a plaintiff's attorney closely before he entered politics.
He is honest and genuine. Ask any of the defense counsel he went up against, and they will tell you the same. THat in itself is remarkable.
He discussed with his son Wade entering politics before Wade was killed. It was not an afterthought as many have characterized it.
You don't say whether your practice of doing 'medical negligence cases' involves plaintiff representation or defense work. I would be surprised to hear you say you do plaintiff's work and still hold the biased opinion you do of other attorneys.
ANd for what must be the hundredth time, I must call you on 'the mansion' smear against Edwards. THe county tax records clearly show that the new home Edwards built was approximately 10,000 sq ft(not 28,000 sq ft as many have alleged here), and that other buildings were included on the same record because there are covered walkways between them.
*He was heavily involved with Urban Ministries in Raleigh, NC where I live BEFORE he ever entered politics. THis group provides food and shelter to the poor and homeless. ANd no one was there to take a picture for political gain. *He spent his own money to establish a computer facility for less fortunate kids across the street from Wade's High School, and the same school my son attended. *He also financed a prototype of his college for everyone idea by funding high school students' college education costs from one of the poorest counties in North Carolina. *He also established the Anti-Poverty Center at UNC-Chapel Hill AT NO COST TO THE UNIVERSITY.
I could go on... but that should be enough to give you a flavor of the sincerity of John Edwards.
You described Edwards as 'slick' but he is a tremendous speaker on the stump, as well as in the courtroom. He communicates directly with people in a way that tv coverage does not always capture.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Coming from someone who knows him locally, that's important. I said right up front I don't know the guy at all and was basing my view of him on gut instinct. Why do we like or dislike certain people? Who knows. Sometimes it's just an instinctual thing that can't be explained.
I do both plaintiff and defense work in med/mal, with a skew more toward defense. I respect attorneys. It's just that some really know how to act for the camera, so to speak. So I've always been a little uneasy watching Edwards, wondering if he's being straight up or if he's playing a role. Then again, I'm usually skeptical of politicians in general so it's probably just me.
As for the house, whether the total square footage includes the main house or the other buildings on the grounds, it's really immaterial to me. The guy built a monumnent to himself while he decries greed. Isn't it a tad greedy to want a 28,000 square foot spread?

19. The total property includes recreational facilities AND OFFICE FACILITIES... |
|
You have to remember that where this home is built is not in the city, it is in a more rural setting. It is not at all unusual for people who live 'in the county' to operate a business from an office they set up on their property.
I don't think Edwards has anything to apologize for in building a new home with all the additional facilities with the money he earned from his work, and did not inherit a dime.
You need to think about something here... when you lose a child, (or almost lose a child).. it changes your perspective on life. Add to that his wife has recurrent breast cancer, and he has two small children. It really is the experiences of life that matter and not the material things.
I don't blame him for wanting to have a wonderful home to share with his family while they are all still here.

16. Thanks For All The Insight On John |
|
I dearly love the man and his family. I almost lost my oldest son Ben in Iraq and I can not imagine how John and Elizabeth coped with losing Wade. I weep when I think of the anguish that surely caused them. Their courage to face up to that and Eliz's cancer alone tell me ALL I need to know about them. But hearing your side of things make me glad that I trusted my gut and was right to give his campaign the money my friend bequeathed to me last summer. It was a nice sum and I didn't have a job then but I knew I had to give it to John. I so want him in the White House.

9. I will not support any of them... |
|
since I'm from Iowa, my chance is over (so to speak), and I'm not ready to root for anyone just yet. I'm toying with writing in Biden in the GE, but I think that's because I'm still pretty pissed about Biden's showing in Iowa. I'll most likely support whoever the nominee is in the GE, but none of them can hold a candle to Joe.

17. At my pricinct caucus they went to Omama, Edward, and Clinton in that order. |
|
I estimate that about 3 went to Clinton, 8 came to the Edwards camp, and the rest (14ish) went to Omaba.
The Dodd people were included in the Biden group as they went there first to try to make Biden viable.

18. Dodd Supporter--I Now Support the One You Didn't Bother to Mention |
|
I suppose I will have to support Dennis Kucinich, despite my very strong and real "peacenik/hippie" reservations, (I think most of those attitudes are naive and arrogant, whether people acknowledge it or not). As I was very impressed by Dodd's organization of the retroactive immunity filibuster, attempt to kill the Bankruptcy Bill (which Edwards, Obama and Hillary Clinton all supported publicly), and other expressions of understanding now of how bad all the capitulation to, and refusal to fight, Republicans has all been, so I was also very impressed by Kucinich's attempt to get an impeachment of Cheney going. We either have laws or we don't! (Cheney should have been out of there with the Patrick Fitzgerald investigation that "somehow" only got Libby.) I am also very impressed with Kucinich's authentic anti-corporate/civic attitude: real health care reform, getting the profiteering out, real media reform, real lobbying/campaign finance reform, etc. Kucinich appears to be the only one who understands the depth of the problem, and is not "on the take." I would not vote for Phony Johnny Hedge-Fund for anything.
