We are living in a gilded dystopia, full of wonders, greed, pleasure and brutality-- spoiled progeny of the generation that mastered the world.
We hide our broken. We eat our young, our poor, our brown. We are selectively modern and stubbornly medieval. We are sucking the world dry like a milk carton, and we cannot throw it away when we are done.
We have become everything I was taught to hate and abjure as a child. We are a bully-- big, vulgar, aggressive, and paranoid.
And against this, we have only each other, and that in a land that right this moment shoves itself apart, creating deep human fault lines.
For that reason, I propose we hold each other with greater intensity. Because the winds are already buffeting us, and we are all Kansans now.
PS, is two generations the right space of time for the one armed bandit of fate to display the number 1968, and spit out handfuls of carnage, fire, and revolution?
Just asking.
