CSPAN caller worried she will have to wear a burkah before she dies. |
|
I've gotta head out for class. If some DUer is on hold for Washington Journal, please shoot a hole in that screaming hysteria and let me know about it.

Sadly so real to some folks that they can't see how ridiculous a fear that is. Reminds me of Reagan convincing some folks that the Soviets were going to march from Nicaragua up through Mexico and threaten the US directly. This was when the Soviet economy was crumbling.

5. Fear can shut down the reasoning process for sure. |

That's why politicians and "leaders" in general use it.

I'm Muslim and have never worn a burkah. You don't have to, you know. And guess what? Islam teaches that you are to treat other People of the Book with respect and allow them to practice their faith. But if you listen to the 'wingers, you'd think all women must don potato sacks with holes for eyes or be beheaded or something! Sheesh!

If it comes out of the mouth of a rethug then it must be true, then they react without thinking. Now we must think that the terrorist are going to make us all slaves or commit genocide.

8. These People Are Both Scary And Fun To Spin |
|
Fear has always been the greatest tool of a tyrant...be it political, religious or otherwise. It's the fear of the unknown or the building up of a boogie or straw man that enables the charlatans and despots to control people and to re-inforce that fear as a mean to maintain or strengthen that control. These people can't explain rationally these fears since it's purely one that's been implanted in their heads through years of indoctrination and repetition. It's amazing that some of these people can be very intelligent, but when it comes to fear, all sensibility goes out the window.
Over the past couple years, I've run into these "the A-rabs are gonna fly planes into our heads" crowd and have tried to pick what few functional braincells are left. When you ask specifics of these people, they can draw you the greatest cartoon...but sure can't explain how or why these people are gonna kill us or why. It's just "they're coming to get us". Once I recorded one of these exchanges and played it back for the person...at first they snarled at my audacity but then couldn't help to hear how childish they sounded. It didn't matter...the fear is deep and constantly whipped up.
Sadly, these people are light years away from the real reason why "they're coming to get us". They only see the world in an Americo-xtian filter...with total ignorance to those who they claim are out to kill us. No concept not only of history and culture, but of basic geography. They can't believe that the "god" they pray to is supposedly the same one those "A-rabs" pray to. And most definitely they can't grasp how this country has and continues to exploit the people of that region and this is a backlash of our heavy-handed tactics into their lives and affairs. But then that requires independent thinking...something the right wing absolutely will not tolerate.

The Authoritarians. http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/A very clear, consice and well written description of who we are dealing with. This guy worked with Dean on his book but I think this one is written in a better style.

15. C-SPAN Repuke Callers |
|
I have come to the conclusion that they are all out of their minds!
I heard a Republic caller from California say the other day that Clinton and Sandy Berger warned the incoming Chimpy administration that they better focus on IRAQ???? No you stupid RW fearmonger - Clinton said you better focus on Al Queda!
The problem with Washington Journal is that no one corrects these callers, especially during open phones.
