13. Very sad, and in some cases |
|
almost obscene re Anna Nicole. It is hard to believe the media would broadcast a hearing concerning people who still want a piece of celebrity even if she is dead. But, as you say, this is what we've become. Even the dead can't rest when the media steps in.

6. Yeah, and people wonder why I stopped watching on |
|
Nov 3, 2004. If I wanted the Enquirer, I'd pick one up at the supermarket.
The funny thing is how little I've missed it. It had become a daily ritual, that's all, a way of marking the transition from afternoon to evening. I was usually on the computer, anyway, so I missed most of the tabloid crap and only watched the last 5 minutes or so when they often did real news on CBS.
Reruns of "The Simpsons" tell me more about what's going on in the country than the evening tabloid broadcasts do.

17. I had a long time habit of turning on MSNBC while getting ready in the morning |
|
I haven't been able to do that for awhile now. They lost a viewer because of their wall-to-wall ANS coverage.
Wonder if they care?

And it's been great to have my mind back.
I heartily recommend it for everyone.
Wish I had done it years before.

33. Oh, I still watch TCM and other old movie stations |
|
I used to watch the interior desecration channel but I got very sick of California yuppies going into huge trophy kitchens and smirking that they never cook.
I still greatly enjoy "Mythbusters."
Other than that, it's there mostly for occasional rented DVDs.

10. This is just hilarious! Don't judges want respect? This judge is |
|
a clown...and his court is a big fat fucking circus.
Whether Anna Nicole was a misfit and/or dysfunctional it still seems she should be buried where it is EVIDENT she wanted to be buried.
Our media channels are just a big fat joke. I told my husband, Jesus Christ a fucking war is going on and our boys and girls are dying and everyone is breathing heavy over MSNBC, CNN AND FOX...waiting to see what the misfit little prick judge is doing to do next.
Sometimes you just wish you could move somewere far away from

she is the father of Anna Nichol Smiths baby and is distraught about ANS death. She's afraid she'd ruin her career if she came out and spoke up.

12. Society of the Spectacle |
|
The fetishism of the commodity — the domination of society by "intangible as well as tangible things" — attains its ultimate fulfillment in the spectacle, where the real world is replaced by a selection of images which are projected above it, yet which at the same time succeed in making themselves regarded as the epitome of reality. -- Guy Debord, Society of the Spectacle
For many people the Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith spectacles are more real than the Iraq war and the neo-con rape of America. Sadly, these same people sometimes actually vote.
(Great little book, btw.)

14. Think of it as the hook |
|
that brings people to the screen, and keeps them there for the more world-relevant news.
Now, if we can just get them to report on the world-relevant news...
I really don't have a problem with what the media covers, it's what they don't cover that bothers me. Some people care about these stories, for a variety of reasons. For me, Spears reminds me of my niece, whom I'm very worried about at this moment. Others have reasons for being interested. The problem with the media is that they don't cover what's happening in Iraq alongside these stories, and when they do, they cover it poorly.

When the hearing went into recess for lunch yesterday, the split screen switched to Spears and a car chase. Pathetic.
