Dear Joementum,
So the “surge” is working you tell us. There were less people who died in December than there were in some of the previous months, and so we should all be celebrating what you called in your
recent piece for the Wall Street Journal “the steadfastness of our commander in chief”. When there are fewer deaths you celebrate, and when there are more deaths you tell us to stay the course. It seems that death does not really matter to you until you can use a fewer number of deaths to spread propaganda about how the policy you supported is “working”.
“Only” twenty-one American soldiers were killed in Iraq in December, and who knows how many Iraqis died but they don't really matter to you anyways do they? We can just celebrate the fact that there were only twenty-one Americans killed, if we keep going down at this rate eventually we may have a month in which fewer Americans die than were killed by Jeffrey Dahmer, who took fifteen lives. Maybe we can do even better than that though and get the number down to eleven Americans killed and then less people would have died than were killed in Columbine, then you will really be able to celebrate won't you?
I have news for you though Mr. Lieberman, while you celebrate the number of deaths in a month which saw more people die than there were killed at Columbine or by Jeffrey Dahmer the reality remains that not one of those people had to die. But they died because of people like you who stood up with the cold-blooded killer in the White House and told us that we needed to go invade a county which had no Weapons of Mass Destruction and posed us no threat.
You cheered on an invasion that has now taken the lives of nearly four-thousand Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, but we can celebrate this past month you say because “only” twenty-one Americans died. We are supposed to be proud of that you tell us, and we are supposed to admire the “steadfastness of our commander in chief” who is responsible for this massacre.
Of course you will likely be celebrating other months in which “only” a couple dozen Americans die, but until all the killing that you supported ends the rest of us will not be celebrating with you. We will not be celebrating until we see this occupation end and your friends sent to the Hague for their war crimes trials.
You are a disgrace Mr. Lieberman. The blood of those twenty-one Americans who died in December is on your hands, and we are not about to praise you or the “steadfastness” of your leader. We are not about to sit on our hands and wait for some “victory” which you have not even defined. We see no end in sight, and I am disgusted by your celebration of the “success” of a “surge” that has torn more American families apart.
Before you go celebrating fewer deaths in Iraq think of the fact that we did not have to see one single American death, but because of people like you we have seen nearly 4,000. And you want us to celebrate. But as much as you may want me to, I am not about to celebrate a month which saw more death than we saw at Columbine. If you want me to celebrate then turn yourself in to the Hague, and help bring this illegal war to an end, until that happens I won't be breaking out the champagne.
Sincerely,
A Citizen
