Global ‘enthusiasm’ for Bush’s departure.
Global ‘enthusiasm’ for Bush’s departure.

The 2008 U.S. elections are attracting an “eager” audience worldwide. This past week, for example, major British newspapers “devoted more than 87 pages to news of the U.S. primaries, including 22 front-page stories.” Much of the enthusiasm, according to the Washington Post, is for the end of the Bush presidency:

But much of the enthusiasm comes from anticipation of President Bush’s departure, according to several analysts. U.S. prestige and popularity in much of the world have sunk to historic lows since Bush took office, over such issues as the Iraq war and climate change. Many analysts said the election has created high expectations that the new president will be more in tune with the rest of the world.

“In many capitals people have been waiting for this change for some time,” said Rosa Balfour, a senior analyst at the European Policy Center, a Brussels-based research group.

1. Of course! People are ready to recover some of the mental
health that has been so adversely effected by Bush.

3. I am predicting we will see open celebration around the world on the 20th
of January, 2009. I mean with people in the streets and maybe even fireworks.
We will feel the giant sigh of relief heard round the world. The anticipation is building.

6. Talked with some German tourists
while in Death Valley in December. They were so kind and polite to me that I ended up apologizing to them for our "pResident", and let them know how ashamed I am, and how hard I had worked to warm my other fellow Americans about him, but to no avail. They smiled and laughed slightly and assured me that they understand, that their country has had its problems too. It was at that point that I realized I had just apologized to the Germans for * when they had had Hitler! That's how despondent I have become in regards to our National Nightmare, that I could not even see the forest from the trees in this conversation! The Germans were optimistic as can be, though, and smiled broadly as they spoke of how we Americans can look forward to change soon. I asked them if they get approached by other Americans who want to apologize for *, and they said, " Yes, all the time."

I had lived on an Army base in Germany as a child during the mid-sixties. I remember their proud nationalism, but also the profound shame these people carried regarding Hitler. I wonder if our problems with * have taken some of the onus off of them.
