Police blow up foul-mouthed CDs that blared in church.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/02/22/church.foul.language.ap/index.html

SANTA FE, New Mexico (AP) -- Three CD players hidden under a cathedral's pews blared sexually explicit language in the middle of an Ash Wednesday Mass, leading a bomb squad to detonate two of the devices.

The CD players, duct-taped to the bottoms of the pews, were set to turn on in the middle of noon Mass on Wednesday at the Roman Catholic Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.

The recordings, made on store-bought blank discs, featured people using foul language and "pornographic messages," Johnson said. He would not elaborate because of the ongoing investigation.

Okay, the police in this country are getting a little untrustworthy.

28. Just the thought of someone going to all that trouble
to scare a bunch of church people with "foul language" made me laugh. I sortof wish I'd have thought of it. Not really, but hmmm.

8. Nobody would suspect terrorists of making bombs that play obscene music
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 03:59 PM by IanDB1
Which is exactly why we must be on the look out for CD players blasting dirty lyrics.

THEY'RE DIRTY BOMBS! FILTHY, OBSCENE, NASTY DIRTY BOMBS!

The terrorists know we'd never suspect it.

I'm going to jump out of my skin every time the pizza delivery guy goes by!

12. Wait, they examined them enough to figure out

that the recordings were on store-bought blank discs, but blew them up anyway? Bomb squads are stupid.

13. I really don't find anything about this humorous.
I respect others' right to believe, or not to believe, and to worship, or not to worship, as they see fit. Apparently some don't. Nothing funny about this incident; I find it pretty juvenile for someone to do this in ANY house of worship.

15. And just a guess on my part
But if it were done in a mosque, DU would be aflame over it. But since it happened in a Christian church, it's supposed to be really, really funny.

21. The 'funny' part is the over-reaction of the police. The church had already
removed them from the pews and then the police examined them and then blew them up.

32. Obscene recordings in a church is not funny. The Police blowing
up CD Players, after examining them to the point of figuring out the CDs were homemade, is funny in a "so stupid what were they thinking?" way.

17. Yes. The only obscenities that should be permitted in church are the pedophile priests
and the organization- all the way up to the top of the Vatican, mind you- that criminally covers up for them and protects them.

19. That's not a strawman. That's a fact.
Fact is, any other organization that had engaged in such widespread conspiracy to protect pedophiles would be up on racketeering charges, and torch-wielding citizens would have run them out of every county in the nation.

But, as usual, the church plays by special rules.

Look, I'm not defending whoever did this thing with the speakers- it sounds juvenile, and I fully support the right of people to worship as they choose without being bothered.

But you'll forgive me if I don't jump on the "poor, persecuted Catholic Church" bandwagon.

23. Right. Thou shalt not call attention to the moral hypocrisy of an organization
that lectures sexually active adults about marriage, orientation and birth control while simultaneously helping child molesters escape justice.

:eyes:, indeed.

22. I don't believe anybody brought up "persecution" other than you, just now
This was a juvenile crime. It was not persecution, and nobody said it was. And yes, we all know the Catholic Church has some problems. As does ANY human institution. Nice straw man. I guess that makes it OK to belittle others' beliefs, desecrate their sanctuaries, etc. Have a nice day.

25. Maybe you've got some reading comprehension problems.
Because I don't see where I said it was "okay" to belittle sanctuaries or desecrate beliefs.

Or whatever.

Sorry. You're right. Mentioning that the Catholic Church Hierarchy has been engaged in widespread pedophile protecting activities probably doesn't really relate specifically to this story--- except maybe from the "blaring obscenities in church" angle.

26. I wouldn't care if it were a Catholic , Methodist, or Presbyterian Church
It would still have been a juvenile act. Even at a Baptist church.

You took this story as the opportunity to hijack the thread with one of your pet issues. You got called on it.

33. The Catholic Church has had members in leadership positions
who have betrayed and abused their congregations. Yes. I think we can all admit that. It still has nothing to do with this topic, though.

30. Shhh You aren't supposed to laugh
this morning on the Today Show they showed an older gentleman describing what was on the tapes. He said it sounded like a woman and then he began to go "Oh.. Uh.. Oh.. Uh" with a completely straight face.

I lost it laughing.
