Less Than Human
Scott Horton - Jan 14, 2008 - http://harpers.org/archive/2008/01/hbc-90002135

Friday marked the sixth anniversary of the arrival of the first detainees at the American GULAG constructed to house prisoners taken in the Bush Administration’s War on Terror in Guantánamo. Around the world, thousands gathered in public commemorations in London, Stockholm, Dublin, Brussels and Bahrain. More than twelve hundred parliamentarians signed a formal plea calling for the immediate closing of the base. The same plea had previously been issued by Pope Benedict, Chancellor Angela Merkel and more than two dozen other world leaders. Indeed, quite remarkably, on Sunday Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff essentially joined in with the protestors.

why this is tolerated. How can people complain about Hussein's human rights record and tolerate this? Torture and indefinite detention don't become ok simply because some corrupt, authoritarian officials and politicians say so.

The public never got to read the 9/11 CIA IG report. There is a strong likelihood that torture was employed on high level al Qaeda detainees. Their 'testimony' was used to create the official 9/11 narrative. Tapes of those 'interrogation' sessions were not given to the 9/11 Commission or legal counsel involved in 9/11 related litigation. CIA officials purportedly destroyed these tapes, possibly on the orders of WH officials. Point being that CIA advocates torture but refuses to be accountable to the public regarding their conduct leading up to 9/11.

Madness. It's seems to come down to the concept of 'trust us' yet there is no reason to trust any of these officials. I would guess that is why these officials resort to fearmongering and decry the patriotism of anyone who dares to object to their warped tactics.

3. Evil can only prevail when men of good conscience say nothing
I have been fighting this since day one... as a child of the holocaust, yes THAT one... I feel that we learned nothing.

It is us who are the evil ones now.

And as Niemoller wrote, it is becoming increasingly hard to live a moral live in an immoral society

4. The majority of Americans aren't moved by the plight of
"Terrorists" in GITMO. They got what they deserve for what they have done is most likely the
feeling. It doesn't matter if the Detainees have never received a trial or not.

5. The majority of germans didn't feel a thing over the plight of the
prisoners at the camps either. They, just like the prisoners at Gitmo, became the other.

6. Recommended.
It hurts, and will keep hurting, at least until it starts to be undone.
