Laid Off
Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 02:21 PM by hiphopnation23
wife and two kids...i was so nervous coming in to this year, just had a bad feeling. following the economy of late, things not looking good anywhere. guess i'm the first statistic of what's going to be an increasing trend for this year. i've got skills, think i'm pretty well employable, there are jobs in my field. i'm not totally freaked out...yet. but i really liked my job and that's the worst part. jesus, so not looking forward to a job search again.

what a pisser! need some commiseration today, DU. SHIT!

:wtf:

almost. My boss gave me a shitty raise and a bunch of shit that let me know I needed to go. What usually happens is they regret losing you, especially someone who loved their job (I didn't). With me, I put my resume out there and I have been blanketed with calls for the last few working days. I'm still working, I'm asking in some cases 30K more a year than I made at this lousy place I'm working at now. I'll be able to get it. Don't dispair. Do you do something you could do for the government? The government has money now, they are sure hiring in my field. Also the government is looking for mid-level management and potential types, so apply through their website. You may need to get something else in the interim, but I'm told the government can be a good place to go right now.

On Edit:
I just got another call from another Government contractor who is interested. Seriously, try the government or government contracting. They are all over the country.

29. I recently got a job with the county government. Joined a union, going to get a pension if stay
long enough or my money back with interest if I leave. More holidays, more money and an easier job with less stress.

I ride the bus to work and will get an extra 2 days vacation a year for doing it. I never thought I would want to work for a government but I wished I started a long time ago. Some people retire here in their 50's and get the equivalent of their last salary in pension income.

8. I'm so sorry...
It's heartbreaking what's happening to our country. Yesterday I was at the county courthouse and was shocked at the "Sheriff Sale" notices lining the walls ~ hundreds of homes up for sale because of foreclosure.

A few years ago, a large company laid off many people in my neighborhood ~ the good news is most (if not all) ended up in a better situation. They started the businesses they'd only dreamed of before, or in some other way made the whole thing work to their advantage. I guess it's true that there's opportunity in every problem. Bless you and yours!

9. How long were you there? What kind of business?
I'm just curious. When I was a bookkeeper for small businesses, I often knew when the company was going down the tubes before anyone else. Is your layoff one of many where you work?

someone who displays the level of enlightened discourse which you demonstrate when posting here would be "let go", although in this heartless economy, the worst happens.

You would be an asset in any workplace.

I hope you find another job very quickly.

When you're planning a strategy for the future make sure there is a little reward for you soon on down the line.

12. I'm so sorry. It;s worse when
there are kids.

I hope the bad news leads to good news, something even better that you would not have found otherwise.

Your post was second on Latest page when I saw it. The first one's subject about Rich Romney and my thoughts went to MI's highest unemployment rate and him the outsourcing king and all the candidates promising to save the state.

Then I saw yours. It felt so sad. I am glad to hear you have wider options but I know the uncertainty and disruption are hard...

Really hope you are on to something better
And may the country be.
(and may all who are troubled also be)

But take the time you have to enjoy your family, pursue other avenues of learning (just in case you can't get employment), and, above all, volunteer! You never know who you'll meet in a voluntary capacity who might help you land your next job.

19. I Am So Sorry.
My husband had to start a new career after working at the same place since he was eighteen. It was the only job he knew. His company downsized and he was out. So he went to school and became a trucker and makes more money now than he ever would have if this wouldn't have happened. Don't give up, check all your resources and I think you will be OK. I will hold a good thought for you.

21. Damn. That really sucks.
I'm sorry. Just try and stay focused on the fact that you do have skills and that there's still work out there in your field. That's two very promising things in your favor.

Right now there's a good chance that things are looking worse to you than what they are. Just dust off the old resume tonight and start making calls in the morning.

Best of luck to you and your family.

24. I can sympathize
I too was laid off, just before the holidays, from a new job (was there 2 months). They told me they hired me as an "experiment" to see if they could save the company!

I am alone, so don't have to worry about supporting anyone but myself, so it's not as bad as your situation. But screw these heartless companies! I hope you at least got severance.

33. Been there.
It's such a shitty sinking feeling. (And if I'm not mistaken, that's the first time I've ever sworn on this board.....LOL!!)

Give yourself a moment to breathe and regroup. You deserve that. And then take those skills and sell them. At least you've got that.

A few years back I lost a job that I really loved. It was partly a bit of office politics, but mostly just the fact that the company was moving in a different direction and needed to make room in the budget for some people with different skill sets. Regardless of the reason, I was devastated...........and more than a little bit scared.

But I landed in a great place working for a really good company with really good people where employees are treated really well doing what I love to do. I hope and pray that you're as fortunate. Soon.

All the best of luck to you!
