Pakistani intelligence officials say a missile strike on a suspected militant hideout in the volatile North Waziristan region has killed at least 12 people.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, say the attack occurred early Tuesday in Khushali Torikhel, a village in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
Neither the Pakistani military nor government has officially commented on the attack. It is not clear who fired the missile, but some aerial attacks along the border in the past have been attributed to U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Both Pakistan and the United States routinely deny such operations. In neighboring South Waziristan, a soldier was killed Tuesday in a clash with Muslim militants.
In recent months, violence has spread in Pakistan's tribal area near the Afghan border, which is believed to be a sanctuary for al-Qaida and Taliban militants.
