When Hitler killed a million people they called him a monster.
But when bush does it, they call him mr. president, and he retires in royal splendor and dies peacefully in bed at an advanced age, surrounded by comfort and family and billions of dollars.

But, America is cool with it, so who am I to complain?

Yes. Grandpa Prescott was going to be the Ambassador to Nazi Germany if they overthrew FDR
Thank God for General Smedley Butler, a real American Patriot and Hero, who turned those Bushies in.

Grandpa Prescott Bush was the Nazis dearest friends and closest American ally.

however:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=2787183&mesg_id=2787521

A story on today's Washington Post front page by Michael Abramowitz, however, reeled off a laundry list of pre-speech challenges for Bush that was capped by this line: "That is the problem Bush faces as he prepares to deliver his seventh and probably final State of the Union address tonight."

"probably final"...

21. Silly
Boy, these Bush/Hitler threads are inane. Seriously. And incredibly insulting to the Jewish people.

First off, Hitler did not kill 1 million. The going estimate is around 6 million. And they were not casualties of war. They were purposefully rounded up and executed as part of an express purpose to exterminate the Jews (and other undesirables as well but mostly Jews). Can anyone point me to any concentration camp that Bush has created? Any effort at all to exterminate a group?

Second, if you're going to count war deaths as crimes, then you need to be consistent in your history and your logic. How many deaths is FDR responsible for? How many Germans and Japanese people (including civilians) died in WWII? How many deaths is Truman responsible for with Hiroshima and Nagasaki? How many deaths are Kennedy and Johnson responsible for during Vietnam? Were these four presidents also like Hitler because people died in wars?

It's easy to slap a label on a president you don't like. I understand the temptation. But you just look silly when you ignore history.

22. The collective consciousness has been raised so that Power can't "exterminate a group" w/immunity
But that certainly doesn't speak to desires and intentions within certain individuals, and the various organizations they represent and are beholden to. If some thought they could get away with it sans legal and moral repercussions, I suspect it would occur. Try imagining a country that by and large fully backed the Bushites/Neocons early on, so that they wouldn't of had to rely on the media drumbeat so much to bolster and omit/obfuscate: how many more scandals, atrocities and war crimes would've been carried out overtly provided the elites didn't have to be concerned with public perception?

33. Then comparing WW2 to the Iraq occupation is insulting as well.
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 11:40 AM by Marr
The fact is that Bush started a war of choice that has cost countless lives, and he did it by fostering paranoia and baseless fear in the population. He's pushed for more consolidation of power in his own hands, he's pushed to make his lawbreaking legal after the fact, etc. He *is* comparable to Hitler. He's pushed the country in that direction. They don't have to be identical to be comparable.

You might as well say they're nothing alike because one had a little square mustache and the other does not.

36. Right on.
Here's the key difference. Hitler's OBJECTIVE was the extermination of a class of people. Bush's OBJECTIVE is to project American power into a part of the world that has failed to modernize and has become a breeding ground for terrorism.

Iraq wasn't a "breeding ground for terrorism" until after the Bush Administration invaded and reduced it to a battleground. So how could that possibly be the excuse for invading?

If you walk up to a total stranger and punch him in the face, can you justify it afterwards by saying, "see? He clearly hates me"?

40. I'm speaking in big generalities here
and am not defending Bush's decision to go into Iraq. But motivation is a factor here. I don't think Bush went into Iraq because he had an obsession with death. Hitler, on the other hand, was obsessed with death and destruction - that was his objective.

their are over 1 million dead iraqis either directly or indirectly because of this war. I'm sure all the other presidents have their own nightmares to live with. In all honesty though you cannot compare this occupation the world war II. That was a desperate fight against nazi germany who had struck first and were taking over europe.

We call this man a nazi because a) his family has a history with them b) facism is facism is facism c) its the worst description we can think of for a man we hate more then anything else in the world.

OH and this is not a war. It is an occupation. TWAT is a sham that should have never have been, same as the war on poverty and the war on drugs. Its not a war its policy.

44. An insult to the Jewish people?
I'd think most Jewish people believe in the principle "never again."

And that would include a million Iraqis.

"How many deaths is Truman responsible for with Hiroshima and Nagasaki?"

Around 300,000, if I remember correctly.

"How many deaths are Kennedy and Johnson responsible for during Vietnam?"

About 2 million directly, and another two or three million indirectly thanks to the Khmer Rouge.

The only reason they're not considered like Hitler is because they "won." Even MacNamara himself said that they would have been prosecuted as war criminals if they'd lost.

One million Iraqis slaughtered is no big deal to you because it's not six million? Not enough genocide for you?

And your mind isn't able to grasp that this was a war of CHOICE by Bush, to prop up U.S. corporate interests, as opposed to a war to turn back astounding German and Japanese aggression and invasion of several countries (not to mention the bombing of a U.S. port?) ... What the FUCK did the Iraqis ever do to us? NOTHING. WWII and the illegal Iraq invasion cannot be compared. Bush chose to disregard the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocents ... and so did Hitler.

The death of one million Iraqis is not "genocide" unless you want be a simpleton and use words incorrectly, making the rest of us look like asshats.

Comparing hated political opponents to Hitler is a good way to show your ignorance of history, or at the very least your disregard for it. People use faulty logic when they do it. According to the same logic you use, Stalin was like Hitler, Genghis Kahn was like Hitler, most of the American Presidents were like Hitler, and who knows, maybe even your dog is like Hitler. It DOES cheapen history as well as the actions of Hitler by misrepresenting his past actions with such baseless comparisons. It also makes you look ignorant.

41. If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged.

If the Nuremberg Laws were Applied...
Noam Chomsky
Delivered around 1990
If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged. By violation of the Nuremberg laws I mean the same kind of crimes for which people were hanged in Nuremberg. And Nuremberg means Nuremberg and Tokyo. So first of all you've got to think back as to what people were hanged for at Nuremberg and Tokyo. And once you think back, the question doesn't even require a moment's waste of time. For example, one general at the Tokyo trials, which were the worst, General Yamashita, was hanged on the grounds that troops in the Philippines, which were technically under his command (though it was so late in the war that he had no contact with them -- it was the very end of the war and there were some troops running around the Philippines who he had no contact with), had carried out atrocities, so he was hanged. Well, try that one out and you've already wiped out everybody.

53. If you declare a dictatorship and invade other countries, they might fight back.
If you are a dictator, but do it really slowly so people aren't inconvenienced all at once, and you invade other countries, they won't fight back because there is no single good reason.

Bush and his friends are doing a slow dictatorship. Like the proverbial frogs in a pot who don't notice the gradually increasing and ever more deadly heat...

Question: Given what we've seen of these monsters, where do you think they'll stop? Will the military-industrial folks and the oil folks change even if we get a Democratic president?

And while there are a lot of differences the two of them are definately in the same category. Why did we invade Iraq again? What tops the list as "conditions of withdrawal"? Oh that's right... an oil policy that favors us.

Stalin was also such a monster, and just in the category of Genocides carried out against Jews you can go ahead and throw in half of Europe at various times in history. Not to mention all the other evil genocidal sacks of crap in history.

However truly Pretzelhead is more like Nero crossed with a Julius Caesar on catostrophic brain damage. He invades for money and power... a little different.

They could do nothing. Or they could wind up a victim too.

More or less like us.

Can we do more? It seems apparent that we can't. It's not that we are cool with it. It is just that fascism is different than democracy. The people are powerless to make change once the levers of power have been seized by lawless thugs.
