Why are some of you eagerly defending McCain?
Edited on Thu Jan-31-08 04:35 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
We can't go easy on him just because he was a POW. If his judgment was somehow compromised during that time then the last thing we need is for him to be leading this nation!

In the '70s, when McCain made his racist statements about Asians, and http://www.theleftcoaster.com/archives/008013.php">betrayed his wife (who stood by his side while he was a POW) for a rich young lady, McCain was over 40 years old.

Furthermore, when he made his http://www.salon.com/news/1998/06/25newsb.html">vile comments about Chelsea Clinton (who was a young teenager at the time), he was 61 years old.

People are not aware of this side of McCain. We need to make sure that Independents find out who the REAL McCain is.

He is now 70+ years old, and I have a feeling his judgment has only gotten worse with time.

2. Apparently one episode of courage and endurance, almost 40 years ago, buys you
immunity for the rest of your life, no matter how awful you become or how terrible your leadership would be for the country. I think there's a natural caution in taking off the gloves against someone who served and suffered, but we need to fucking get over it, or we're going to lose.

16. Exactly. Unlike repigs, we don't need to go after his actual military service record
I respect his service. My concern is the way he has conducted himself since retiring. And I'm not going to give him a free pass *just because* he served. Those are two separate issues.

25. What courage, he did what the NVA wanted him to do
He made a tape recording for them and other stuff. Yes he was tortured and the US government forgave him for cracking because of it, but the fact remains he did do the NVA's wishes...

4. Keep it coming on McInsane
Anyone defending this boneheaded mad bomber is crazy. He is WORSE than Bush.
His POW history gets him undue admiration when, in fact, he is a disaster when it comes to domestic issues, futuristic thinking and progressivism.

This man is fucking dangerous. Add to that his age and mental instability.
FUCK McINSANE TO HELL.

5. These "generic" posts that talk about "some people" are a real hoot.
Who are all these people doing all this defending?

Why don't you ASK them in the threads where the posts are, instead of posting this shitty general innuendo that suggests there's a massive McCain insurgency here? You don't actually expect people to reply to you, do you, with specific reasons why they just LOVE McCain?

What's the point of your post?

And that first picture, with that caption, is pretty classy---NOT.

You should remove it while you still have time to edit.

Edited on Thu Jan-31-08 04:42 PM by wienerdoggie
edit to add: they say that his use of the term isn't racism and just means that he's still very angry about Vietnam, but that shouldn't stop him from being President.

21. that is pure BS
they said they understood why he would say it. not that they thought he was right, or that they agreed with him, or that they liked him better for saying it, or that it's his right as an American to free speech, or any other defense of the comment. just that they could understand why he would say it.

horseshit. you're soaking in it.

some said he's not racist. I just don't understand how you make a statement like that but not be considered racist. Clearly he harbors some racial hatred.

28. or possibly he's like
my mate's dad who's not racist at all but spent a few years ONLY hearing Vietnamese referred to as "gooks" - occasionally it still slips out.

My 98 year old grandmother refers to "coloured" people, is she a virulent evil racist or a product of her time?

30. they're human beings
I tend to hold them (and politicians) to THAT standard. I don't expect my politicians to be more or less "moral" than the people they represent.

Sorry I don't view this is an issue worth spending time on - I don't give a shit whether the next President is "mean" or nice, makes little difference to those shot by US bullets.

Some of us feel differently. I feel that publicly using racial slurs, like "macaca" or "gook", as a Senator and a Presidential candidate is highly inappropriate and demonstrates a lack of self-control no matter what one's experiences were in life. Some don't see it that way. Oh well.

Edited on Thu Jan-31-08 07:02 PM by Djinn
after all, their judgement is a bit screwy. Also no former POW's or anyone who's been subject to intense psychological and physical pressure because their judgement may have been warped during that time.

Also we should definitely make sure no-one who's made a narky remark is allowed to vote because we wouldn't want such abhorent vile people choosing the govt.

The names thrown at Ann Coulter and the Bush twins here are far worse than what McCain said about Clinton.

Stop grasping at pathetic straws like this - DU has been wall to wall with patehic stories about snubs and handshakes and meanies calling Chelsea a fug and precious little about POLICIES.
