I wasn't popular in school |
|
Never invited to a dance, always chosen last, if at all.....so you don't know how much it means to me to have had so many people lovingly give me the hearts!
I guess my husband is right-you are never too old to have a happy childhood. Skinner, you were brilliant in thinking up this hearts idea and keeping it going every year. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is finally having a happy childhood.
Thank you one and all!!!!
Love, Ayesha

to me that I was able to protect so few; now so long ago.

9. You have given me new insight on things, mr_hat |
|
I was so alone with my pain--perhaps some of the popular kids did try to reach out.
But one good thing about my upbringing. Because of it, I have empathy with others, and, as an adult, I've tried to protect those who were like me.

15. Bless you. Patti Griffith's song "Tony" puts |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 07:51 PM by mr_hat
it all into context for both the overlooked and those of us who did too little for them, I think:
Does anyone remember Tony? A quiet boy, 'little over weight He had breasts like a girl
When I wasn't too busy feeling lonely I'd stare over his shoulder At a map of the world
He always finished all his homework Raised his hand in home room He called the morning attendance With the pledge allegiance to the gloom
Hey Tony, what's so good about dying? He said I think I might do a little dying today He looked in the mirror and saw A little faggot starin' back at him Pulled out a gun and blew himself away
edit: some formatting dealie
I hated every day of high school It's funny, I guess you did too Its funny how I never knew There I was sitting right behind you
They wrote it in the local rag Death comes to the local fag I guess you finally stopped believing That any hope would ever find you Well I know that story, I was sitting right behind you
Hey Tony, what's so good about dying? He said I think I might do a little dying today He looked in the mirror and saw A little faggot starin' back at him Pulled out a gun and blew himself away
Hey Tony whats so good about dying, dying Hey Tony whats so good about dying, dying Hey Tony, what's so good about dying?
He said I think I might do a little dying today He looked in the mirror and saw A little faggot starin' back at him
Pulled out a gun and blew himself away Pulled out a gun and blew himself away Pulled out a gun and blew himself away
Tony...

the actual one was pretty emotionally painful. I think I will start in August, when I have my 50th birthday, and get my Red Hat. Or maybe now...

26. you sing my song, kineneb |
|
I shall be 51 in April
Today I wore a purple sweater
When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple
When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

25. I was woefully average. Plain, frumpy, brainy, etc. |
|
If I wanted to go to a dance I had to ask a guy. I'd get to go, because someone would say yes, but never was I the belle of the ball.
I blossomed when I got to my late 20s and was already married! (I asked my husband out on our first date. His answer? "What, with you?")
I am now constantly complimented on my looks and feel like a beautiful woman. It feels incredibly shallow because of my experience as an adolescent and young adult...but I can't say I'm not enjoying it.
Late Blooming Is Sweet!

I had only a couple of dates all my life--and then I met my soul mate at a retreat. Love at first sight at age 38. We've been together ever since.
