House Vote on Contempt Is Expected Soon

By CARL HULSE
Published: February 13, 2008

WASHINGTON — Democratic House leaders plan to force a vote as early as Thursday on holding Joshua B. Bolten, White House chief of staff, and Harriet E. Miers, former White House counsel, in contempt of Congress.

Senior Congressional officials said the House leadership had essentially decided to go ahead with the vote, which is expected to spark a fight with Republicans over what they see as a politically inspired inquiry.

The contempt citation, approved in July by the Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote, stems from the refusal of the two to testify before the panel in the investigation into whether several United States attorneys were dismissed for political reasons.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California, would not confirm the pending vote on Tuesday night. “One of these days,” Ms. Pelosi said.

The administration has already said it would order the Justice Department not to pursue a contempt charge against either Mr. Bolten or Ms. Miers.

1. I give it a chance in the House
If it were the Senate, my attitude would be "Why bother?"

3. Ha!
:hi:, Solly. I know, it'd be hard to believe if they actually did something with these two characters. I'm going to be interested in seeing what they can do legally to combat that nasty exec. privilege this admin throws around so cavalierly. I wonder whatever happened to Pat Tillman's case, come to think about it. That kind of went by the wayside.

6. About Damn Time...How About Inherent Contempt?
Be assured this regime has expected this for a while and will dare to push for contempt and then stonewall it with its highly politicized Justice Department. They want to go to court where this citation will sit for months and boooshie's judges are sure to make sure the fix is in.

Instead, there should be a vote on Inherent Contempt...drag Bolton, Meiers and ROVE in and if they don't testify, lock 'em away in the Capitol basement. Congress has the power...and they know this is the only way to get at this regime.

Now we'll see what appetite the rest of Congress has for holding this regime accountable. It's time the Democratic leadership looked to see that most people view Repugnicans like a bad date. The overwhelming Democratic votes in virtually all primaries this year shows the political dynamic in the country has changed...unfortunately Congress hasn't gotten that memo yet...it may not until November.

Thanks for reminded me...and there's Gonzo as well.

No sense in compelling Condi...if her head was any emptier, it'd be used by Stanford for a vacuum chamber.

Cheers...

8. I agree per inherent contempt,
but I don't know that they have the stomache, or political courage to take such a strong stand. *sigh*

9. I agree, but do they (House) have the courage?
I say 'courage', because what used to be 'no brainer' for past Congresses, is now a bunch of scared chickens.
