Uneducated are treated like animals |
|
I wish my wife would go back to college. Every jobs she gets it's with some corporation that treats her like shit. Yesterday she almost died from a major bronchial attack, the worst since she was a kid, partially due to the weather the doctor says. She went to the emergency room using my job's insurance. Today, she's back at work and they are making her work with industrial bleach which her doctor forbids since it is an irritant to those with respiratory problems.
If she doesn't do it, they will get rid of her -- which apparently means by killing her or firing her.
Just like they dismiss women the day they get pregnant.
They could have put her on another duty, but don't care. In case you're wondering, yes we live in a primarily Democratic area, but this corporation is operated from a 'red' state.

7. I've been in that boat |
|
After 9/11 with Bush's fear mongering, it took me 4 years to find a job that actually utilized my education. So there is hope if you have one. If one doesn't have an education, everyone says too bad, blaming the victims of repugnant work environments.

The wealthy oligarchs and their corporations treat us ALL like animals. Education, unless it's in a field some rich fuck is too stupid or lazy to figure out, but totally NEEDS for his own comfort and can't outsource to someone cheaper, is irrelevant.

12. Metaphorically or literally? |
|
I think there is a difference when an employer intentionally exposes someone to industrial bleach because they just want to see what happens.

14. what about institutionalized stress, |
|
low pay, no security, diminishing benefits, poor environment
the bleach thing is absurd and should be illegal--sue.
but chronically deteriorating work conditions in the US are intentional. We're all being systematically screwed back into a better-behaved serf class.

16. People are clawing for the scraps |
|
Without valuable skills, people end up in highly political work environments with a bunch of back stabbing and the worst folks clawing their way to the top.
As you are saying, we will all end up in the same situation eventually, where there are no job skills that people find valuable anymore. I always wonder how people will treat one another when artificial intelligence takes over all the science and engineering jobs.
Anyway, back to the main point, in most organizations, the ones most likely to become managers are the ones who A) have an education, and in many cases, B) love to be bossy and backstabbing. Personally, it would be very easy for me to be a bossy asshole in order to become a corporate manager if that's what I wanted. I find those type of people repugnant.
Are you saying that these bossy backstabbing assholes are somehow being mistreated as well? If so, maybe I'm being hypocritical with my lack of sympathy for them. Our lack of care for one another, even the worts among us, may be our downfall.

4. Have you talked to a lawyer? |
|
I would think her lung problems might be covered under the Disabilities Act and her employer needs to make reasonable accomodations for her.

8. Good idea, but she has a 2nd interview Monday |
|
We're hoping she gets that job. And that's what they rely on, workers just moving on, so they just get new fresh victims.
I would like to report this company after she leaves it, but I don't think our system works that way.

6. Does she have a note from the Dr. excusing her working with bleach? |
|
They would opening themselves up for some major liability issues forcing her to do so if there is documentation that such exposure would be harmful.

9. She'll see her doctor tomorrow |
|
We'll make sure she gets one. Thanks. But I also wonder if that wold give them an excuse to fire her. Like I said, they fire women when they get pregnant, so I wonder if this would be comparable.

it then will give you an opportunity to sue them for wrongful termination and discrimination. We have a little law called the Americans with Disability Law and it will be on your side. My son is using it for a job related injury that was totally unnecessary. They will do anything and everything to cover their butts but document, document, document and make sure you don't send any false signals via your actions at home which the company will monitor. Good luck.

13. She'd probably have to die to get a decent judgement |
|
Believe me, I'd like to get back at this company, but having sued an employer before for a work related injury, prospective future employers would probably start viewing her as litigious.
Bottom line is, it's a lot easier to just get another job than to work with a lawyer. If they knew she was working with a lawyer, they would probably make her life worse, finding some was to punish her. The problem is that companies will continue abusing other suckers.

Both from her doc and his/her recommendations and from the company and their demands. Is there no HR department at her site?
This is very serious and, yes, I know enforcement is different from high sounding stuff in company press releases. Best of luck to you guys. :grr:

I'm thinking someone in this thread must have just given me my 2nd star because it's pretty much the only one I've been in. That makes me feel better.
