FEMA is **still** killing New Orleanians
FEMA Plans Trailer Exodus Over Chemical

By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN – 1 hour ago

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — After downplaying the risks for months, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Thursday it will rush to move Gulf Coast hurricane victims out of roughly 35,000 government-issued trailers because tests found dangerous levels of formaldehyde fumes.

FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison said the agency hopes to get everyone out and into hotels, motels, apartments and other temporary housing by the summer, when the heat and stuffy air could worsen the problem inside the trailers.

"The real issue is not what it will cost but how fast we can move people out," he said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said fumes from 519 tested trailers and mobile homes in Louisiana and Mississippi were, on average, about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes. Formaldehyde, a preservative commonly used in construction materials, can lead to breathing problems and is also believed to cause cancer.

The findings stirred worry and anger across the Gulf Coast, where FEMA is already a dirty word and housing has been scarce since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck in 2005.

6. My heart weeps...
My husband is from NOLA. We used to go down there quite frequently. However, after Katrina, I just could not get him to go. He always had excuses, but I think he was just plain scared (rightfully so) of what he would find. Unfortunately, this Christmas we were forced to go down there to bury my FiL. And we went back for MLK Day. Both times we drove through the neighborhoods he grew up in, and the 9th Ward. The 9th Ward is horrible, we were afraid to drive down the side streets. His own neighborhoods, lower middle class, were just devastation as far as the eye can see. And even in the upper middle class neighborhoods, there were still FEMA trailers in the driveways and tarps on the roofs. The codes that the Nat'l Guard spray painted on the front of homes really got to me.

The house that my husband grew up in has been demolished. All of the other houses on the street are gutted and unoccupied. About a block down, a small motorboat still lies out in the middle of the street.

FEMA to Continue Trailer Distribution

By JON GAMBRELL – 7 hours ago

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Thursday it will distribute mobile homes to victims of last week's tornadoes in Arkansas and Tennessee, despite a health warning about high formaldehyde levels in other trailers, officials said Thursday.

James McIntyre, a FEMA spokesman, said the agency would begin to process mobile homes stored at the Hope airport for distribution to victims of the Feb. 5 storms. McIntyre said FEMA will not be "putting anything on hold."
