Well, here it is--America has NEVER had an election between two SITTING Senators before. |
|
Never.
The only possible exception is Sen. James Buchanan of Pennsylvania, who beat out Sen. John C. Fremont of California for the Presidency in 1856.
However, Fremont had been out of office for 5 years, while Buchanan had already served 4 years under James K. Polk as Secretary of State before his nomination.
All the others had since assumed other positions, such as the Presidency or Vice Presidency, before facing another Senator.
But it's going to happen this year...

1. You know what would be interesting? |
|
To list all the various ways in which this election is different from all others previously. I'll bet it would be a fairly substantial list, too.

2. Are you being sarcastic? Or would you really like me to? |
|
Heck, it's a Saturday, and I love me the Wikipedia.

9. Sarcastic? Absolutely not! |
|
I wasn't necessarily suggesting you do it because I don't know what kind of time you have available.
However... if you think it would be a fun idea and want to go for it, I'll bet the results would be really interesting!

3. Another thread on the same subject? |
|
There oughtta be a law.
Anyway, bucko, there could be a third party winner, or, like I replied in your other thread, Al Gore.

5. There isn't going to be a third part winner--Bloomberg can't win, and he would |
|
have launched his campaign at this point if he thought he had a choice.
As for Al Gore--I simply CAN'T see that happening. I just can't. Even if he WANTED to run for President again it wouldn't happen.

4. And don't we traditionally prefer NOT to elect senators? |
|
Isn't it kind of rare when they get in? (I'm operating on memory here. Anyone with actual statistics, please correct.)

8. When John Kerry ran, the news media reminded |
|
us constantly that no Senator since JFK had been elected to be President. Now that most of the leading candidates are Senators, not a peep about it.
