Reward for Vermont Iraq Vets: Moose Hunting Licenses |
|
I just thought this was funny. The Vermont legislature is going create a special lottery for moose hunting licenses for Vermont Iraqi War Veterans. To be sure, moose licenses are a coveted item here, but still it surprised me when I heard that when Rep Peter Welch was in Iraq talking to Vermont soldiers that this is what they told him they wanted. The legislature is rushing the special moose license for vets deal through the legislature today.
So much for the myth of Vermont being a latte drinking bastion of volvo driving liberals.

It's a bastion of volvo driving liberals who swill down their latte's while moose hunting.
And those hunting vests their wearing are from Land's End and the color is mauve

5. Cali, you make me miss home.... |
|
There are times when I read your post's that I miss home but this one really hits me hard. Isnt it just like our guys to ask for moose permits considering what they face over there? They could ask for almost anything and we would proudly give it to them, yet all they want to do is get home and get hunting. Dammit!!!! You make me want to cry.
Will be home soon - God I love Vermont.

11. Get your tail back here! |

And yes, I though it was awfully endearing even if it was that dreadful old creep Loren Shaw from Derby who was droning on about it.

Caring for a sick relative in Ohio. Ive been here long enough to vote for Obama in the primary on March 4 so my visit comes with a silver lining. Oh, and I'll be damn sure to send for my absentee ballot!
I truly hate this place like no other.

6. Vermont is a very rural state - hunting is popular there |
|
When Howard Dean was Governor, he knew not to mess with people guns up there.

9. yes, I know we're a rural state. I live in the Northeast Kingdom |
|
by far the most rural part of it. And have done so for 25 years. Thanks for the info though.

I guess I should have aimed that response to some of the folks who were making the latte-drinking comments. My Mom comes from the Northeast Kingdom. She was born in Newport, and raised on a farm in a small town with a population of only a few hundred.

I'm actually fond of it. I've spent some great days sailing on Memphamagog. It's a beautiful lake.

My elderly Mom has been schooling me on how to be a cranky old Yankee, so I'll fit right in. :D

Many years ago I shot one in WA, Cost me a couple hundred bucks to send the meat back here to CA. When it got here nobody in the family would eat it. Even the dogs recoiled in disgust at the smell of it.
I had some of ground up and mixed with beef to make a tolerable sausage.
But most of it got given away or tossed.
If these Iraq vets have ever tasted it, they wouldn't be so anxious to get these licenses.
Mike Huckabee might like it though. I understand it tastes like squirrel.

13. Yeah, I'm not wild about moose meat either |
|
but you can do a roast that's pretty good if you marinate it in red wine and bay leaves for 3 days or so before cooking it.

17. I've tried moose meat before |
|
It wasn't horrible. Use lots of seasoning, and be prepared to roast it for a while. Otherwise it's kind of tough. I also tried bear once. But it was way too fatty for my tastes.
