something that SHOULD BE, IS SUPPOSED TO BE a natural condition of living in a country guided by laws and ethics:

<snip>
LifeLock
Guarantee Your Good Name

Identity theft can happen anywhere to anyone. In line at the store, online at home or when you're buying your morning coffee. If your identity is stolen, you can spend hundreds of hours cleaning up your credit and struggling to get back your good name. That's because stolen identities are used up to 30 times, with most victims only discovering the theft after they've been turned down for a loan or contacted by a collection agency. You may already be a victim, many times over, and not even know it. But not with LifeLock.

LifeLock, the industry leader in proactive identity theft protection, offers a proven solution that prevents your identity from being stolen before it happens. We'll protect your identity and personal information for only $10 a month - and we guarantee our service up to $1,000,000. We also offer the only identity theft child protection program available in the market, so guarantee your good name today and enroll now.

about any bunch of scammers who come around the bend.

Fuck Air America. My rights and common sense trumps their advertiser's and their bullshit schemes.

edit: By the way of providing you with some much needed info, I saw their ad on cable television, TVLand to be exact.

6. Yes, the very concept is ridiculous.
If everyone could lock his/her credit report and get a new SSN if the old one became compromised, and if employers, etc., would stop playing fast and loose with SSNs, none of this would be necessary.

(Not that I think it's necessary now - I'm with you that it's a sad commentary on our society.)

7. Everyone CAN lock their credit report.
For less than $10 each to the credit reporting agencies. Not per month...a one time fee. You can arrange to unlock it for specified people/agencies for a single look.

Oh, and it's more likely gov't. agencies playing fast and loose with SS# than employers. Here in SC anyone can buy the list of driver's information...that INCLUDES the SS#...if you have the money. A court challenge to stop the practice failed.

8. Well, my employer *did* play fast and loose at one point
but they are trying to reverse that. That's ridiculous about the driver's info. Our county clerk was putting a bunch of documents, many with SSN's (you could even find DeLay's at one time) online, but I think they've reversed that.

Thanks for the info on the lock. For some reason I thought there were some states where you couldn't do that, and that Texas was one of them. Not that they should charge you or require you to ask - in a rational world it would be the default....
