I CAN'T BELIEVE SICKO LOST
I almost fell off of the couch. I really wanted Michael Moore to WIN but he didn't. Maybe his next film will win.

START THE IMPEACHMENT

12. I disagree. It IS great.
But that's not saying that 'Taxi' might not be greater.

I think that on a purely film level, 'Taxi to the Darkside' may have more staying power - it will be relevant 25 years from now, whereas, I hope, "Sicko" will just be a quaint film about the bad old days before we finally got single-payer healthcare.

At a MINIMUM Rumsfeld should be on trial for warcrimes.

31. Hi Breeze. They are equally important.
Especially when you have health insurance companies issuing "cost saving"
death sentences everyday.

But I'm happy to hear a good, important film like 'Taxi to the Dark Side' won.

;)

So we can stop spending billions on it and fund health care!!

I hear what you're saying and health care is important but I think Iraq is priotity #1!

and being denied life saving care/treatments.

Especially now in CA, where Ahnuld's budget cuts
will specifically target healthcare for the poor, elderly and
the disabled.

But Oh, we still have that tax break on yachts that are
purchased here, then kept out of state for 60 days!
Doncha know- those yacht owners need their tax breaks.

I don't see the war continuing with either one of
our candidates in the WH.

Healthcare I'm not so sure about.

Both are important and can be pursued at the same time.

I'm sorry you're having a terrible ordeal but the fact is, we need to stop
funding the war, so that we can take care of social issues, like health care.

8. I'm ok with it
I think it's a pretty powerful statement that all 5 nominated films involved giving the finger to the Repugnicans in one form or another, so I would have been happy with any of them winning.

13. As of last year, they moved them up to February.
I think it's because it's always a down time in the industry, and the early Oscars gives the nominees a kick before they disappear from the theaters.

By the time they usually happened in mid/late March, the audience was just that much farther away from having seen the films, contributing to dwindling Oscar viewership.

15. Ah, I see...
I thought all the buzz I was hearing in the background about the Oscars was the list of nominees coming out last week or so. I work nights and don't have cable, so I'm a little out of the loop. Usually they are around my birthday, which is how I remember them.

35. It's also a ratings sweeps month
November, February and May are when the networks set their advertising rates, based on ratings performance. That's why they often trot out their 'strongest' stuff during these periods.

This is why the Super Bowl was bumped into February, and why ABC wanted the Oscars moved up. Notice that "American Idol" kicked off this month too? These are the biggest ratings draws of the season.

11. The problem is that MM often releases his movies in the summer
and by the time the voting starts, there are other, more recent and seeminly more esoteric documentaries that have been released..and probably some people have pushed MM's movies to the background by thenn ..

I don't think MM does his movies for the recognition, though..so he's probably ok with someone else winning

23. It Wasn't One Of MM's Best...
Sicko was a very valuable movie...said a lot, but from a Hollywood standpoint, it fell far short of the entertainment factor of past Moore movies. While messages are important...and Sicko made millions aware of the mess our health care system is...style always trumps substance in Hollywood and a good story will trump a strong message.

From what I've read...Taxi to the Dark Side is both a compelling story with a strong message...the two elements that are rare in today's films...and it's not that Sicko didn't deserve it as much as Taxi to the Dark Side appears to really deserve the honor. I look forward to seeing it when HBO shows it.

I'm curious about MM's NOLA project...
