I found a FUN toy!
You can spy on your neighbors!

Type in your zip code or town and see the names of people in your area and what campaigns they have contributed to.

  • I found out the optometrist donated $1,000 to Huckabee :wtf:

  • Backyard neighbor gave to Ron Paul (I always knew he was a nut anyway, with his confederate flag and his belief that Gore is WRONG on global warming, "it is all caused by paved streets...we just need to go back to dirt roads") :tinfoilhat:  :puke:

  • The nearby copyshop owner gave to Kucinich :patriot: :patriot: :patriot: :patriot: :patriot:

  • And my veteranarian contributed $500 to John Edwards!!! :patriot: :patriot: :patriot: :patriot: :patriot:

A woman I know put over 2K towards Obama. We'd never talked politics, so it's cool to see.

3. Or you could just *talk* to your neighbors, etc.
 I mean, that's what I do. My optometrist is apparently even more progressive than I am. My ex-landlord is a psycho-pug, and my neighbors in the north lot don't vote because "it wouldn't make a difference anyway."

Besides, spying is creepy. And scary around here, frankly. The last time I checked most of my neighbors had given to the pugs :scared:

(yes...I have checked...sigh)

16. I did talk to my neighbor.
That's how I know that global warming can be completely solved by ripping up the asphalt streets and going back to dirt roads. Also I learned that the world is only 7,000 years old. He knows it for a fact because he learned it in kindergarden and the rest of us are stoopid.

I just say, "Good morning!" and head to the other part of the yard where a weed seems to desperately need immediate attention.

17. see how fun that is?
Now you don't have to read all those nasty history books and get confused by facts. You have time to spend in your garden because you can learn everything you need to know from your neighbor...while weeding!

I love this two birds with one stone stuff.

25. Spying is creepy,
but it's The American Way, dontcha know.

Look at it this way: If ya go to a Dem optometrist instead of a repub one, at the end of the year, your optometrist will have more loose bucks to donate to Dems! (and less loose bucks that might be donated to the Rs) So you've done another small part to strengthen and support Dem candidates. ;)

4. Most of the folks in my zip code gave to Richardson
and the list is incomplete because my own donation to Edwards didn't make it.

Out of a huge list of contributions, only 2 were to the wrong party.

I love this area.

it was $90,039. I'm in Arkansas, so 95% of all contributions went to either Clinton or Huck.

I have 4th quarter and 1st quarter donations that aren't listed.

But what really surprised me-and I'm active in local community-is that contributions to Republican candidates outpace Dems about 3 to 1. Who would have thunk?

13. This is why I won't contribute to any campaigns any more
After giving to John Kerry in 2004, I discovered that people could find out my married name *and* my street address just by Googling my birth name. This is a total violation of privacy as far as I'm concerned, and if the Democratic party wants any more of my money, they will fix it.

20. It is disturbing, I agree. They are required by law to report $200 or more.
I think having addresses as public info is very wrong, but there it is... law.

The solution is to give $199 or less to any one individual campaign if you want to keep it private.

My husband and I have donated small amounts directly to important congressional (and SoS Bowen) campaigns that are not even in our state. It is important and useful to support Dems wherever you can. So if it is a concern, you need not stop donating, but to "diversify"! You could be assisting a candidate that very much needs help, for the benefit of all.

Most of that is distorted because I live in Chapel Hill and the un-itemized donations are recorded at Edwards headquarters.

But it is almost that Democratic without that bump:

Zip:
27514 R: $14,812 D: $266,064
27516 R: $10,586 D: $200,000 plus $3.6 million
27517 R: $48,813 D: $163,089 (includes a large area outside of Chapel Hill)

A huge majority of this is for Edwards, the local guy.

Chapel Hill/Carrboro really is a special place. Great town, great people, lots to do, good restaurants, free public transit system.

Not to mention the basketball: UNC men and women ranked #2 right now. BTW former BB coaches Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge are each good Dems (contributions show on the linked site). They actually integrated the last area restaurants back in the 1960's with Charlie Scott.

We talk a lot here (endless local government meetings), but we backup our talk with our time and our money. Our bus system is free for everyone (exceptions for shuttles to special events/games), we recycle so much that tipping fees could no longer pay the expenses of the recycling program (we now have a "tax" instead), and we can recycle almost everything.

Good schools, good quality of life, great University and medical complex, strong commitment to others. Search for the "Carolina Covenamt" to see how we ensure that students from our poorest families will graduate without and student loans or other debt. Without that, UNC is rated the best value among our nations universties, year after year.

Jesse Helms hated us, both The University and the town. We wear that distinction as a badge of honor.

Many of our neighbors are working to do their part, too. Durham, in particular.

If you are ever visiting, email me and I would be glad to introduce you to my neighborhood.

BTW it is nearly time for the women's BB team to beat NC State.

46. OK, yer jerkin' my chain. You have "public transportation"?
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 07:58 PM by troubleinwinter
And it's "free"??

There is NO public transportation in my city of 44,000... free or otherwise. Did I mention that John McCain is our senator?

There is NO public transportation in my county of 175,000... free or otherwise. Did I mention that John McCain is our senator?

Guess what! We have the strictest voter registration ID laws in the country. You must show proper ID to register. Aint many voter drives around here because you must have a driver's license or state ID, otherwise get yourself (some damned way) into downtown in this rural area to the courthouse.

"Recycling"? WTF is "recycling"? There's no recycling center here. If I want it taken at curbside, I have to pay EXTRA (NOBODY does it, I suspect they just throw it in with the rest of the trash anyway).

(I moved here to the high mountains of Arizona from No. Calif. a coupla years ago, where mandatory curbside recycling- cans/glass/paper/trash has been a booming, raging success for years)

Did I mention that John McCain is my senator? Did I mention that Rick Renzi, under indictment on 35 counts is my congressman?

Good news, we're damned well gonna go blue this time in congress. We got a real fine candidate. 'Round my area we're determined to go blue. Then green.
.......

HERE is a circumstance where someone (in relation to post #20) could send a little check to help us turn a republican Renzi(R- criminal) House seat over to a Dem seat. We could use a hand, and turning the house Dem would help us all. A $5 or $10 would mean much to help.

I understand your situation wrt senator; mine are currently Dole and Burr, used to be Jesse Helms! Have pretty good congressmen here, but NC has its share of Repubs. Post a link, might well respond.

AZ must be a real shock after northern CA. I've been to Flagstaff a couple of times; also Phoenix and Tucson. Miss that last exit going east in Flagstaff, next stop is almost Winslow. (There are a couple of interchanges, but not many.)

We have avoided building extra roads and parking lots through the use of the buses. Check out the kind of coverage we have: http://www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us/index.asp?NID=72 We still need regional mass transit. They are working on that and on the high-speed rail corridor connecting to DC and the Northeast. Triangle Transit Authority has a lot of work still remaining.

Didn't mean to pull your chain, know it is in good humor. BTW did I mention that some of the good restaurants have 1/2 price nights on bottles of wine. I'll buy the first couple.

As far as the city goes, we have $49, 362 to Repukes, and a whopping total of $122, 289 to Dems. That's a ratio of nearly 3 to 1 in favor of the Dems.

57. My former dentist, now being investigated for cupping his patient's breasts, gave $1000. to Romney..
But thats probably because he is a Mormon, like Mitt Romney.

BTW, the man has a wife and four young children at home.

Republican Family Values at work once again!! <puke>

66. Just did the zip code north of me in my LD
South Seattle area. $3,353 to Repubs, $43,901 to Dems. Wow. The first 20-30 on the list are all Obama, with a few scattered Edwards, Biden, Dodd, Kucinich. The Repubs mostly Paul, with a couple McCain. 76 results, only 2 for Clinton. About 60 for Obama.

67. I pulled out the calculator and added up only the posts listing repub vs Dem donations.
republican: $229,906

Democratic: $5,073,895

Dems over repubs, 22 to 1.

Of course, this doen't take into account donations smaller than $200, so I think the repubs probably have us beat.

i live in a red county--or it used to be all red

$775635 to republikas
$1,477,138 to democrats

thanks for providing the inspiration for me to put it together.

70. Wow. Thanks for those numbers.
I have absolutely noooo idea how I came across that site today... searching for something-or-other! I guess it's been there awhile?

I think it's a very interesting trend, the apparent D vs. R donations. To some degree, we are using random areas. Hard to know what difference the smaller donations would make. But the repubs don't appear to be forking over very well.

I don't know that $ can tell us that an area has gone blue from red, but seems the repubs aren't wanting to pay to play much.

We'll see if some more numbers come in, then add em up again for kicks.

Thanks again!

72. I was struck by how many Dems in my area gave to Kucinich and Edwards.
I'm in a relatively red area, but their support was surprisingly strong. Richardson was strong too... but he is a well-liked governor of our next-door state and well known here. I was surprised at the strength of these candidates and not much notable strength of Obama or Hillary.

I also noticed a pretty weak number of donations to McCain... and I'm in his own state of Arizona.

Oddly, a number of relatively moderate repubs told me just before the 2006 election, "Good thing McCain isn't up for re-election this year, he'd lose." I don't know what their reasoning was.
