The person who brought me here is "...taking a break..." |
|
Many others I respected and considered friends have gone the same route, some others have gotten TS'd. I have started my second and this time permanent boycott of GD-P.
The reason this is happening? Everyone knows that.
As I watch this go on, I ask myself two questions more and more frequently:
What am I doing here? Why do I think it will do any good?
Maybe it's time for me to think about a break.

1. If you are like most of us, you just need a place to vent and discuss |
|
things that you can't many places. I wonder sometimes why I come here, but there are many good debates if you just ignore the trolls who come here just to push hate.

2. I've been in semi-retirement from GD:P for years |
|
I found I was battling it out with people for basically nothing. And with absolutely unreasonable people. It's much easier to pick your spots and take breaks from that forum. Otherwise it can get consuming.

3. I blocked GD-P, and have vowed not to return |
|
I've been on this board for more than six years now, and am amazed and saddened at what I see in GD-P. There are some good people here, and we have some good debates I think. But those conversations never take place in GD-P.
Please don't leave, Mr. Durden. We need good people like yourself to make DU what it is. :hi:

7. I've been here since the beginning. |
|
And I've watched some horrible times go on. I was proud to be published many times on the old front page.
But I'm tired. And I'm getting old: investing time and energy here as long as the political argument is reduced to two factions trying their damnedest to cram each other into a wood chipper is not the way I want to spend time.
I want to stay but I feel like I'm caught in a scene from "Apocalypse Now":
Kurtz: Are my methods unsound? Willard: I don't see any method at all, sir.

5. Breaks are always a good idea |
|
You can go one of two routes-only post on groups within DU that are non-political (Pets, Photography, etc), or leave altogether. I took a 2-3 week break a while back and felt much better when I returned.

6. The Fun Of The Silly Season... |
|
It's gone on longer than I expected, but I sense it'll be over soon. I've all but avoided GD-P as I don't support a candidate and find the bloodsport going on there a game I'm not gonna play. Makes life a lot easier around here if you appreciate the people but never take this place too seriously.
In my real life, I have yet to meet another DU'er...or at least someone whose identified themselves that way...and that's fine with me. I pop in here for a little bit every day...or if to check what's going on and I see a lot of good things that happen here, but always at arm's distance.
