1. I have hunted for years (deer & small game)

What do you do with a dead bear? And most black bear hunts are over
"active baits" i.e. food dumps where the bears come like clock work ...

Although I do agree with him about assault rifles being unneeded for hunting.

Just goes to show that the NRA is just the mouth piece for the gun industry.

2. Of course assault rifles are a waste of time for hunting
now he's begging them to forgive him, even saying he'd love to go hunting with an assault rifle. Hell, maybe if he went out with a 0.50 cal they'd take him back.

In true rightwing fanatic form however he's pretty much destroyed his career because the NRA and the rest of the assault weapon lovers refuse to forgive. How mighty "Christian" of them huh?

and a slug barrel for bambi.

that a .22 for plinking and someday a .30 cal for moose & elk.

Some of these people have owning hundreds of guns tied up w/ dick size.

Why in the world do you need an assault rifle?
To cover the field w/ fire?

4. Fake word..
Take a ruger mini-14. In its wooden stock it is a pc gun. Put the SAME action in a scary black stock it is illegal in CA and an assault rifle.

The term is applier to semi automatic rifles.

In reality, your shotgun would be far more effective in causing a mass casualty event than a rifle.

I take issue with it because it is a slippery slope to a sniper rifle becoming any centerfire rifle with a scope and a bipod.

6. My colt heavy barrel AR-15
cost $1500 base, my heavy frame/barel AK cost $700 base.

The AR is great for cheap plinking and teaching others how to shoot, and I got a little partial to one in the Marines.

I would never have bought a POS AK except this wasn't A POS. Some were manufactured to high specs and mine is chambered in 308 NATO.

Depends on what you want to do with it I guess, .223 and .308 are always going to be around at a decent price. I would never hunt with either but I shoot them both much more than my crowd pleaser, the .300 Remington UM, or my matching SS fluted .270.

7. Is that a Vepr .308 or a Saiga conversion?
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 09:56 PM by benEzra
That's the heavy-gauge RPK style receiver, yes? I'd guess a Vepr, but I'm not positive.

Here's my (much less expensive) AK lookalike in 7.62x39mm, a 2002 model SAR-1 with Kobra collimator sight:

Same rifle in a hunting-style configuration, with POSP 4x24 scope and 5-round magazine:

9. VEPR .308
I only have two ten round mags, and can't locate any more, but that's not a problem for me.

I only buy the best of the line. Doesn't make for a large collection but they are more reliable.

Some say its too heavy, and it kicks too hard, but it covers the 30 caliber semi very well and with the longer barrel, is pretty accurate.

The Super VEPR has a thumb-hole stock that looks like any other semi-auto hunting rifle, you have to look twice to tell it's an AK.

Sorry the pic is so large, don't know how to resize.

10. Nice rifle. Is that a crossbolt safety above the trigger guard?
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 10:43 PM by benEzra
BTW, Robinson Arms has Vepr .308 magazines, but they are a bit spendy ($40 each).

11. Yep, modified safey
I emailed and got an out of stock response, no biggie.

After 20 rounds someone else can load and shoot for a while.:)

My AR shoots like a dream and I save my shoulder for the 300 Ultra Mag.

A few/ ten rounds from that hog and my old frame is late for my first beer. Shooting is over.

8. You own a .69 caliber slug gun...
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 10:11 PM by benEzra
and you think a non-automatic centerfire .22 is a fearsome weapon? :D

Actual assault rifles (the automatic kind) are tightly controlled by the National Firearms Act. Mr. Zumbo wasn't talking about machineguns, but about non-automatic civilian rifles with modern styling, like AR-15's and such. AR-15 platform rifles are popular for small-game varmint hunting, and you can turn it into a deer rifle simply by swapping the upper (.243 WSSM, 6.5mm Grendel, 6.8mm SPC, 7.62x39mm uppers are available, are decent deer calibers). Slap a .50 Beowulf upper on it and you have a very modern-looking .45-70 repeater, or a .22LR upper and take it squirrel hunting. The design's modularity is one of its assets, I think.

Here in NC, it doesn't matter what your rifle looks like, you are limited to a 5-round magazine when deer hunting. But if you are using a rifle in an appropriate hunting caliber, with hunting ammunition and a 5-round magazine, it doesn't matter what the rifle looks like.

A lot of people hunt with SKS's, which are ballistically very similar to .30-30 Winchester (123-gr softpoint at 2350 fps, or 154-gr at ~2110 fps).

BTW, this is an "assault weapon" according to the Bradyites, and there is currently legislation in Congress (H.R.1022) to ban it by name, along with the M1 Carbine:

12. So many Zumbo threads...
I just want to point out that the NRA is not a mouthpiece for the gun industry; it derives its agenda from the bottom up, following the lead of its members. The entire US firearm industry does only $3 billion in sales each year, a miniscule amount compared to industries like energy, food, cars, electronics, etc. Because of the high-precision manufacturing required to make guns and relatively low sales volume, arms companies have thin profit margins and can't afford the high-grade lobbying that megacorporations can bring to bear.

Thousands of people own ARs; most are used only for target shooting, but many of these guns are used to hunt small animals that destroy crops and injure livestock, which is what the AR-15's cartridge was originally designed for. With the inherent accuracy of the AR platform, there's no reason not to.
