This argument is so ludicrous.
When two democrats face each OTHER in ANY state, there WILL be a winner..even if it's the bluest or reddest state in the country.
Winning it or losing it has little bearing on how any candidate will do in the general election.
Just about ANY democrat will win the "blue" states, just as just about ANY republican will win a "red" state.
Demographics just are what they are.. For any candidate to claim that they beat the "other" candidate in a state their party would carry anyway, is no glorious win...any more than a win in a state they will NOT carry in the general election.
It's just being "Mom's favorite kid" for a day.. You are not getting kicked out of the family because you were overruled at a family meeting...At the next meeting, your idea could be the winner...
