***DUzy Awards for week ending March 7, 2008***

Welcome to the bodacious, loquacious, rapacious DUzy Awards, a compendium of star-spangled amusement from this week on DU. Congratulations to this week's winners!

The DUzy Awards will be announced every Friday, if I get around to it. Previous awards can be found in my journal.
Note to Mods: Skinner has authorized the DUzy Awards to be posted in GD.

Special thanks to Peake, turtlensue, MelissaB, unhappycamper, Yael, HawkeyeX, Forkboy, BleedingHeartPatriot, scarletwoman, dicksteele, eridani, stellanoir, Patsy Stone, Kurovski, rocknation, 8_year_nightmare, KitchenWitch, Hissyspit, BleedingHeartPatriot, CaliforniaPeggy, walldude, kgfnally and NanceGreggs for their invaluable assistance.

OP by Old Crusoe:

If Mike Gravel doesn't win the nomination, it won't be because he's a white male.
And it won't be because he was wrong on the issues either.

response #2 by JimGinPA:

I'm Confused - Is This Racist Or Sexist?

response #4 by TheDoorbellRang:

It'll be because he makes McCain look like a young whippersnapper

response #7 by Old Crusoe:

McCain should drop out of the race and write his memoirs.
I'd love to hear more about the Peloponnesian War.

response #8 by PurityOfEssence:

Publicly reveling in stiffing credit card companies doesn't much help, either...
Sure, it appeals to children and anarchists, but some of us like the warm feeling that our fellow creatures feel beholden to their word. Gauche, I know, but it's a failing of many of us.

response #10 by Old Crusoe:

I never touched your credit cards, PoE. Swear to god.

response #24 by PurityOfEssence:

      SURE you didn't...
...explain the crotchless jodhpurs and sequined jackboots then, willya? That sweet young lady in Bangalore STILL doesn't believe a word I say, and it took three calls to her just to get the charges taken off. I hope you're happy.

Feh.

response #25 by Old Crusoe:

Damn! I KNEW I should have covered my tracks better.
That's the LAST time I trust Bill Bennett to work out an escape strategy.

On a thread by samrock:

Hillary's vote in 2002 was actually to try and STOP the war from starting!!

response #4 by Paint It Black:

So the Democrats who voted against the bill were voting FOR war?
Huh.

response #18 by monomach:

      I believe you.
In other news, Dick Cheney shot a guy in the face to protect him from being shot.

response #98 by Forkboy:

OP by DuStrange:

Lee Mercer, Jr, chooses his veep--DU mentioned!
Minnesota (SP) - Lee Mercer, Jr, despite having won none of the Democratic Primaries, continues to insist that his campaign is not over. In fact, he has chosen his running mate.
“Most of my support has come from democraticunderground.com, so it seemed natural to me to go there to look for my vice-president.”
He interviewed several of the posters, or DUers as they refer to themselves, before making his choice: temeah.
“I was very interested in his view of the female anatomy. He was all in my house with the nipples. It was, quite frankly, an easy choice.”
temeah has yet to make a public announcement, but Mercer expects to begin making appearances (national and international) soon with his new running mate. Mercer’s staff revealed several campaign themes that Mercer expressed interest in, such as “Bald is Beautiful” and “Nipples in America,” before settling on the one shown in the ad below.

Special thanks go to investigative reporter turtlensue for her help in making up shit for this article.

response #3 by lost-in-nj:

      No way
He called ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Told ME he LOVED my style
that I was a white, democratic woman with children..

read my posts on DU

and agreed with my thoughts and values.....
but he kept saying

"so how does that sound Hill?"

wtf???

he's playing us

response #9 by temeah:

temeahYes, well, when Lee (friends just call him "Lee") contacted me all up in my house
about being his running mate for his bid for President of the United States I was, as you might imagine, a bit surprised and honored (all three). I mean, we see eye to eye on the bald thing, which is good, but did we see eye to eye politically as well?

Many have called Lee a kook and a crackpot; did I want my name associated with such epithets? Of course I did, because they apply to me as well! So I accepted his offer, and look forward to being all up in the White House as Veep with my man Lee Mercer, Jr., the next President of the United States!

Mercer and temeah-- because EVERYONE likes nipples (all three)

OP by theredpen:

Attn. Lee Mercer Supporters: You should know this
I realize that many people on DU support Lee L. Mercer, Jr. for his presidency, and I concede that Mercer would have won several key states had it not been for the racist MSM blackout on his campaign. But with Clinton and Obama coming neck and neck in the primary, and a vicious battle against the Republicans ahead. Don't you think that it's time to shift your support to one of the front-runners?

It doesn't have to be Obama — this isn't a race thing. I also realize that there is some concern about the U.S. Government Political Party (Democrat and Republican)enforcements. Specifically, will Clinton enforce the U.S. Government’s Political Party regulating its enforcements itself with its regulations pertaining to itself and according to its enforcements?

These are reasonable issues that can be discussed in the rational and reasonable manner that has typified the dialog in the GDP forum.

Now, I know that it's critically important to prove that Governor William Perry is killing Lee L. Mercer and his family very seriously said the Texas Congress 3-28-07 10:36 p.m. But don't you think that Clinton or Obama could denotate Governor William Perry as a perpetrator into Eye Spy Community-Military Intelligence and Prarie View A& M University for Killing, Espionage, Sabotage and other crimes?

Jeb Bush is all in my house with disease, too, people, but we have a general election to win.

response #6 by Crooked Moon:

      so transparent.
this is exactly the type of not-so-subtle psy-ops bullshit that keeps great americans like lee mercer from turning this country around. how many heroes have to be denied the opportunity to transform our nation because of these types of baseless attacks on their integrity, intellect and sanity?

you should be ashamed.

response #9 by Crunchy Frog:

Never! If it's not Lee Mercer, I'm just not going to vote.

OP by Thurston Howell III:

I just got off the phone with Lee Mercer! Prepare for the bombshell!! He will take the lead!
He said he proved "the United States of America has two Governments and they are Government #1 and Government #2 and I own Government

# 1 a Private Ownership named Eye Spy Community-Military Intelligence (All Three) a Government of all the Intelligence agencies in The United States of America and in All International Countries in the World a Nationalization in Business and Commerce Intelligence National and International."

He will win all of Texas, Ohio, VT and R.I. and get the remaining pledged delegates!

response #6 by ih8thegop:

Will he sweep both parties' nominations (all three)?

response #9 by DJ13:

If you have to be crazy to want to be President
Mercer's the guy for the job.
:silly:

I am going to throw up.
Dear Deity of Whatever Kind You Are in Heaven if there is one,

Please let me get through this caucus without offending any of my friends and neighbors. Please ensure that this is conducted fairly and according to the rules. Please make sure that the total lunatics do not show up and if they do that I can throw them out quickly and in a legal manner. Please make sure that the zillions of lawyers in my precinct do not decide that this would be a fun venue in which to grandstand. Please do not have the media show up and decide that it would be amusing to have a three ring circus in the gym. Please make sure I have enough of a grasp of Roberts Rules of Order to get through this. Please do not have anybody sue my ass or if they do please make sure I have enough insurance that they don't get the house.

Thank you and may we all move forward into a brighter tomorrow. Amen.

I just got off the phone with Barack Obama.
He wanted me to tell everyone on DU that he knows that some of his supporters - and alleged supporters - are saying rude things to people here, but he encourages everyone here to look past that and on to 2008. He said to check out his web site and see the things he'd like to do for yourself, and hopes that this conciliatory gesture of apology will make up for all that is gone wrong here. He also said that starting tomorrow he will dedicate a department of his campaign to rooting out disruptors posing as his supporters on DU, and hopes that this will make good going forward, and that that is the least he can do for the loyal Democrats here.

NOTE: This post is sarcastic.

OP by GoPsUx:

Twas the time of the primaries..
'Twas the time of The Primaries, and all through Du

Not a thread was productive except maybe a few.

The mockings were sung and the tempers did flare,

And GD:p read like that freeper place over there;

The children were bitching, and screaming childish names,

As if the right wingers took a hold of their brains;

The mod's doing their duty, locking threads that were crap,

I joined the discussion and fell into the trap,

Then someone started a thread, it was something quite crappy,

By the responses it got, people weren't very happy,

Away with this thread, Mods please lock it now!

If the lock wasn't sudden, people would have a cow.

My candidate is better, this is true, I just know it.

If your candidate is chosen, they'll most definately blow it.

Then all of the sudden it all became clear.

That many were just taking out their frustrations here,

A guy at his console,a gal over there,

All arguing about nothing and getting nowhere.

From the threads I was reading,I felt kind of sick.

One person responded and was kind of a dick.

More rabid than wolves the posters became

They screamed , and shouted, and created names;

"Now, Hilbot! now, Obamaton! now, Hitlery and Hussein!

On, hillhounds! on Obamaniacs! on, other childish names !

Either over the top! or under the belt!

Everyone bruised from the blows that were dealt!

Negative thread only, would stay toward the top,

While positive threads, were always a flop.

And all over the forum the curses they flew,

No one was immune, even I caught a few.

And then all of the sudden a letter from skinner,

This shit better end when we have us a winner.

As I read that letter, posted by the Admin,

It occurred to me that we are still going to win.

So even though now, while we argue and fight,

And tear each other apart, emulating the right.

And divide into factions who swarm and attack,

And reply to every thread like the OP's on crack.

Our eyes should be focused on the battle ahead,

But it's easier to scream, until our faces turn red.

No matter what battles we each choose to fight,

We are closer to each other than we are to the right.

I wish both could win,but that isn't going to be,

Two amazing candidates who have made history,

I've written all I can, and destroyed a great rhyme,

But I have a few things to say before I run out of time.

It has been total hell! For this last seven plus years

Our government lying and feeding our fears

It will all be over soon,I know that I'm right.

We will kick McCain's ass come election night.

(sorry about the grammar crimes(and bad poetry))

National Weather Service issues "Major Shitstorm" warning for TX, OH, RI and VT (Tue 3/4/08)
NOAA weather notice 080303 0900 Eastern Standard Time: A shitstorm warning has been issued for the following states: TX, OH, RI and VT effective 0600 Tuesday March 4 2008 until further notice. A shitstorm warning indicates shitstorm conditions expected in forecast areas within 24 hours. Expect shitstorm accumulations of historic proportions by early Wednesday morning (3/5/08). Computer guidance indicates storm vorticity ("spin") will be most intense in OH and RI after poll closings early Tuesday evening. The long-range forecast models suggest Tuesday's shitstorm will fragment into four distinct minishitstorms that will persist in forecast areas until June. Greatest minishitstorm intensities expected in the Buckeye State. The public is urged to take immediate precautions to protect pets and small children for as one veteran shitstorm forecaster warns "it's gonna rain granite cookies around here like a total mutherfucker tomorrow"...

Still, an interesting report from a reader in Dallas:

On the local conservative radio stations, many Republicans are calling and complaining about feeling 'disenfranchised'.

Apparently, they didn’t realize that by implementing Rush Limbaugh’s strategy of voting for Hillary in the Primaries to prolong the Democrats fist-fight, they would not be allowed to vote for any of the Republicans on the rest of the ballot..."

OP by stellanoir:

An anecdotal and frivolous tale. . . Okay so I voted.
I went down to the school at noontime and saw someone who mothered the petulant bane of my teen years and didn't want to vote in an acrimonious atmosphere so I split without voting.

I waited an hour an a half and went back.

As soon as I got out of the car I saw an older couple who are raving liberals and probably have at least 5-6 PHD's between them.

They had just voted so I bellowed at them, "Now there are two good Huckabee voters if I've ever seen any."

They totally cracked up. We yacked about the pizza parlor being closed and hopefully just being remodeled.

The wife said, "We have two excellent candidates. I'd be happy to see either of them win."

Then the guy who's car we were standing next to showed up and said, "If you really want it (meaning the car) you can have it." I joked, "yeah we're only here to commit grand theft auto."

The husband was talking with the owner of the car that we had pretended briefly to rob. So I got to speak with his goodwife privately. We spoke of the Obama phenomenon and I said, "I've never before seen anything like it."

She said, "He doesn't like him."

They had voted so I didn't respond.

Then I went in and affiliated and then voted.

Then, in the process of disaffiliating, I had some funny conversations. I said I was disaffiliating because I feel that in this land once lauded as the land of the lively discussion, there are simply far more than two paltry points of view.

Then I brought up the issue of the etymology of the word "inauguration." One older guy was clueless. The other older guy tried to figure it out but didn't know. I said, "It's from the Greek, that patterns in nature will reveal appropriate leadership."

Then I asked them if they saw the limo that * was driven in during his second inauguration. I quoted someone as saying "it looked like a bowling ball rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue." It had so much armor on it it probably got 2 MPH. But when I was telling a dear friend about it in one of my best verbal faux pas EVER, instead of saying inauguration, I said "during the ignore your nation."

They laughed.

Then I went outside and ran into some Obama supporters. As is my proclivity, I babbled on about the electronic voting machines and how the ruse of the optical scanners being secure is so bogus. I told them about the botched NH recount and the acute discrepancies between the hand counted tallies and the machine counted ones, and the high speed chases through curved mountain roads, and the slit ballot boxes, and how a full state recount wasn't allowed and all of that BS.

I referred them to Bradblog and Mark Crispin Miiller.

Then I spoke of how our state regulations had been altered. We used to be able to vote in either primary on the day of the primary election.

In this deeply Blue State, they changed the rules so Republicans had to change their affiliation by early December if they wanted to vote in the Democratic primary. My mum was bummed because she wanted to vote. Independents could do it on the spot.

Then one of the Obama ladies said, "Mr. _______________ just said the same thing." He said to her, "You are supporting the right candidate. I wish I could vote for him but I'm a registered Republican." They said they had heard the same thing all morning.

Ahhhh Mr. ________________ served on Nixon's Cabinet.

How wild is that?

A raving liberal loathes Obama and a former member of Nixon's cabinet thinks he's the right candidate.

That irony just cracked me up.

      French village bans death
"The mayor of a French village has issued a decree banning residents from dying in his territory unless they own a spot in the overcrowded cemetery.

'It is forbidden for any person not having a plot in the cemetery ... to die on the territory of the village,' the mayor of the southwestern village of Sarpourenx wrote in a decree that warned of 'severe punishment' for offenders..."

41. Here is something interesting I found about that:
“Our life is like the dial of a clock. The hands are God's hands, passing over and over again. The short hand is the hand of discipline, and the long hand is the hand of mercy. Slowly and surely the hand of discipline must pass, and God speaks at each stroke, but over and over passes the hand of mercy, showing how there's 60-fold of blessing for each stroke of discipline and trial God gives. Both hands are fastened to one secure point: the great unchanging heart of a God of love, fastened to the pivot of the solid Rock.”

Now excuse me while I pack my Hawaiian shirts for a certain trip to Hell.

42. Hmmm. I'm trying to figure out how this works. So you've got one hand stroking
slowly. And something about discipline. But there's another hand passing around and around -- the "mercy" stroke? And then there's this "fastening" bit -- is that like bondage?

Man, are these people kinky or what?

Like, come again?

65. I'm having a little trouble with your "fresh bagel AND chocolate chip cookie" reference.
I mean, I appreciate the bagel's freshness (as opposed to a wooden one from the day-old bin), but I question
your use of the word "AND," implying that the two would be had together, equally, one after the other.

If the bagel is satisfying enough to be listed here in the same breath as "prince" and "lighthouse," I would assume
that one would not want to dilute the pleasurable after-taste with something as blatantly obvious and sweet as a...
common cookie!!!!!!

Makes me wonder if you really believe all the over-the-top brown-nosing-heap-o'-praise you've laid down on
our great leader, JeffR.

See if I ever bother to lie to YOU again after this little left-field snit of yours.

OH! OK now, so suppose you tell us exactly why YOU feel JeffR is our "great leader", Missy Mocha-Nose.

C'mon...chop-chop...from the heart, not from that DUzy-hungry, scorched earth, ambition-machine you call a brain.

this prose symposium of yours is a thinly veiled attempt to destroy a friendship of thirty-years, seven months and sixteen days. It's a 3:00 am call to destroy the very foundation of the academy, and it will not stand. For seventy-five years the DUzies have been an agent of good in the world. I'm surprised at you. And now you offer these bizarre and outrageous musings, after our having two children and six colonoscopies together.

Good bagels and chocolate chip cookies are my favorites. I could have also said ripe avocados and liver sausage. Would you have preferred THAT? Well, would you have!!? WOULD YOU!!!?

DUzy since, oh, I dont know, two weeks, one day and forty-four minutes, more or less.

And isn't it just like you to bring up bygones - i.e. our colonoscopies and our two children.
I remember the colonoscopies well. Yours was particularly unpleasant. Two doctors and the nurse were seen running down the hall, toward the Exit sign.
But the children... could you just jog my memory a bit? Two boys, girl and a boy, what??

As for your choice of menu items, fine. Fine! You can have your fresh bagel AND chocolate chip cookie, as long as I can have my buttermilk biscuit
and thick slice of chocolate blackout cake. And then we'll have to face off, and let JeffR pick the winner.

Unless you cut and run, before that...

And... I GOT ONE! Thanks JeffR.

Sadly, our candidates have now given the innocent diversion of eating babies a bad name.

39. I'm officially nominating post #23 for next week's DUzys
Whoops

I forgot I'm supposed to do that privately and of course this system is totally rigged. LOL

Thanks Jeff for your intrepid efforts dear.

Now do I get a chewy toy too?

I know, I'm so high maintenance, or so I'm told.

55. If you are the Diablo Cody of DU then the solution for your lack of DUzys is obvious.
Try stripping.

61. JeffR - Didn't anyone ever tell you? If you want to get rid of an onerous task that's assigned
to you, do NOT do such a bang-up job that no one can conceivably replace you!!!!!!!!!

(Thanks!)

77. I'll never understand it
My semi-serious posts get DUzy's. My subtle one-liners and over-the-top slapstick are ignored.

True art is never appreciated until the artist is gone. ;)

(But thanks anyway - I'll add it to my collection! )
