5 Years in Iraq is to many!! ~~ March 19th in DC... Be there or near your home but DO something!

United for justice and Peace (UFPJ) has initiated a massive day of creative, nonviolent action
and civil disobedience in the nation's capitol, focusing on the "pillars of war" to interrupt
business as usual for those promoting and profiting from war and empire building.

People from 36 states have registered to participate in the actions in DC, and more are signing up every day. Seven clusters of actions have come together to focus on different pillars of war, including "Blockade the IRS," "Disrupt the War Profiteers," "Funk the War," Civil Resistance with Vets, a "March of the Dead," and more.

There are also already more than 410 local events in all 50 states

on the 5 Years Too Many calendar, and more are being posted hourly.

Join us -- these actions are growing every day, but we still need YOU!

(And everyone you know, too.)

The Winter Soldier schedule has been posted -- live video streaming on the 'net begins on Thursday at 7pm, with "Winter Soldier and the Legacy of GI Resistance." Friday and Saturday's testimonies will also be broadcast live on Free Speech TV. Organize or promote a gathering in your community where people can witness them!

What 5 Years Means

A note from Leslie Cagan:

In a little over a month, the U.S. will have been occupying Iraq for 5 years. It's hard to believe. Even when looking at the awful numbers -- more than 1 million Iraqis and nearly 4,000 U.S. servicepeople killed, 2 million Iraqis living as refugees in other countries, with another 2.5 million displaced within Iraq, more than 1 trillion dollars spent -- I find it difficult to grasp what 5 years really means. What is the full sum of the destruction and suffering that has taken place? And what does it mean for the future of our country and our world?

There are some who want to push Iraq off the table until after the elections this fall. We can't let that happen -- there's too much at stake. We must be as active, creative, visible and vocal as possible in order to keep Iraq and our demands prominent in the national discourse throughout the electoral season and beyond. Now is the time to stop funding the war and to bring all the troops home!

Join us! http://www.5yearstoomany.org/

On Wednesday, March 19th, people from almost 40 states (so far) will gather
in Washington, DC, for this historic day of action.

We hope that you too will decide to come to DC on March 19th! It is not too late!

Check out the new and improved 5yearstoomany.org, which is updated daily with more resources,
details about the convergence space, information about trainings, action details, and new flyers
you can download and pass out in your community!

If you can't make it to DC, there are still many ways you can take action.

More than 370 local events are being held around the country, including viewings of the
historic Winter Soldier hearings, and more are being posted on our calendar hourly!

Find and take part in an event in your area, or organize your own!

The election instigators don't really give a rats ass

about what is right. They just want to BE right.

Got it. :(

8. 5 years.

I'll be at the Chicago event, and the one in my home town that will be held earlier but last year's events were pretty sparsely attended. There's an apathy about the protests imho, a resignation if you will to the FACT that we aren't having much impact. Even our Dem representatives aren't very responsive on this.

It's just really sad that Iraq and all it's horrors has dropped off our national screen.

19. I'm going to a Winter Soldier event near me on the 15th...

Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan will feature testimony from U.S. veterans who served
in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day
out, on the ground. The four-day event, March 13-16, will bring together veterans from across
the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan -- and present video and
photographic evidence. In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and
other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the
history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.

In Washington DC, U.S. veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will testify
about what is really happening on the ground in those occupations. UFPJ is helping
local groups organize public viewings of the hearings via live video feed.

The hearings will go from the evening of Thursday, March 13th, through to the afternoon of Sunday, March 16th.

The power of these hearings will increase exponentially if groups and individuals
organize local gatherings where people in every corner of the country can witness it.

Now is the time to plan a gathering (or perhaps several gatherings in your area) where people
can collectively listen to the live broadcasts of the hearings. This will be an incredible opportunity
to reach out and engage with people who have not yet become active in bringing the war to an end.

17. Still waiting for O'LOOFAH's "apology to the nation"
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 11:34 AM by UTUSN
Back then he said, what? Something like, if the Iraq Attack was wrong in six months he would apologize? I'll try Googling for the exact quote.

On Edit:

The very first link for Google Search "O'Reilly Iraq apology March" was our very own Stewert's in oreilly-sucks.com:

*******QUOTE*******

http://www.oreilly-sucks.com/oreillywmd.htm

O'Reilly Iraq WMD Information
----

Lately, Bill O'Reilly has been playing a little game regarding the WMD situation in Iraq.

Originally, Bill was convinced that when we liberated Iraq, there would be WMDs aplenty. Back in March 2003, he went so far as to tell the Good Morning America viewers that "if the Americans go in and overthrow Saddam Hussein and it's clean, he has nothing, I will apologize to the nation, and I will not trust the Bush administration again."

Months later, after President Bush declared the end of combat operations in Iraq and still no weapons of mass destruction had been uncovered, O'Reilly started to regret those words. So he gave the White House an ultimatum to come clean about the WMDs "in the next few weeks." But when that deadline was about to expire, Bill offered a new expiration date, granting the President an additional five months. Five weeks later, when it became obvious that the administration had no intention of meeting O'Reilly's decree, Bill extended it another six months.

Bill keeps hitting the snooze button on his WMD deadline so that he can avoid (or at least delay) apologizing to the nation and declaring his mistrust for the Bush administration, two things he probably never had any intention of doing under any circumstances.
