80 year old women slugs cop over ticket
http://www.wesh.com/news/15525751/detail.html

TAVARES, Fla. -- An 80-year-old woman went down swinging when a police officer tried to arrest her.

A Tavares police officer pulled the woman over at the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 and Huffstetler Drive for an improper lane change.

Authorities said Thalia Logas refused to sign a ticket and punched the officer in the stomach and chest several times when he tried to place her under arrest.

The officer called for back up and a Lake County Sheriff's deputy arrived.

The two officers said they finally got the handcuffs on her, and she managed to wiggle out of them and threw them out the window of the police car.

"Obviously we want to make sure we handle somebody of that age with care," Jody Maltzman of the Tavares Police Department said.

"If it was my mom, I'd be wanting to have it out with that policeman," Tavares resident Ralph Smith said.

None of us would be laughing if they did tase her, and it would cause a cry for justice or revenge (depending on how others word it). This was a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" for the officer. I feel for him on that. Give the cop some slack. The law knows no age, and she did get violent (reason for arrest). I am just glad no one, cop and especially the lady, got hurt.

33. She refused to sign the ticket.
He began to arrest her and then she became violent. At least, that's the way I read it.

41. Imagine the dispatchers hearing this one
"21, requesting immediate backup. Subject is an out of control, frail 80 year old woman. Repeat - backup requested for combative and violent 80 year old woman."

LOL - I know a lot of cops and I can guarantee that this guy is taking some shit.

29. actually, there are several reasons for backup
1) it is easier, generally speaking to get a noncompliant subject (regardless of age) into cuffs with more people present and hands on(backup). and by easier, i mean using less force on the cops part, and less risk of injury to the old lady. simply put, it's not just a safety for the officer issue, it's a safety for the arrestee issue. so, it's not that the cop was afraid of getting hurt, it's just a way to make it less likely that ANYBODY gets injured.

2) it's also a CYA thing, because an extra officer also means an extra set of eyes to provide an account of what happened, in case some sort of complaint was made.

it's really, as stated, a lose/lose proposition for the cop. no cop would want to arrest an 80 yr old lady. it CAN'T turn out well, and it could turn out badly.

Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 01:03 PM by Rosemary2205
They were NOT arresting her because of the traffic offense, or for being violent. She was arrested for refusing to sign her name. THEN she got violent.

I would too.

Edit - to add the NOT. (damn typing)

no judge will be sympathetic to her plight now.

Also can't anyone see the obvious double standard here? The subtext of this post is that 80 year old women are meek and generally not a threat to anyone physically, but yet on the current GD page we have posts that say we can't attack McCain because of his age and or physical condition?

30. Some places you don't have to sign for a ticket, it can just be mailed to you.
We had an incident like this in my small town. 80 yr old guy didn't pull over for cop, didn't hear siren, finally noticed lights and pulled over. Cop ticketed him for not pulling over fast enough and tried to get the guy to sign and take the ticket. Guy said no. Cop said yes you have to. No, I don't. Yes, you do. No, I don't. Finally: "take it or I'll tase you" (seriously). Guy took it and reported to police station and court what had happened. Turns out that no, he didn't need to take it, that it could have been mailed to him.

So, as with those traffic cameras that catch people running red lights, no, you may not need to sign it or take it in person. It can be mailed.

Regarding McCain. Of course you can attack him because of his physical condition, but not just because of his age.

24. Is cop bashing the "in" thing to do here?
The officer did everything in his power to not hurt her and did everything by the book. She's an idiot for not signing the ticket, and then resisting arrest. No sempathy from me.

26. Somehow I Don't Find This Amusing
If the woman was crazy enough to act up this way for a pullover and ticket, they had every right to arrest her. If she doesn't know how to behave, maybe she doesn't have the general judgment or rationality to be behind the wheel of a car, either. Now, considering her age, I'm sure they didn't actually want to hurt her physically in the course of the arrest, and the backup, etc., had everything to do with the kid glove treatment.

Why does anyone jump to the conclusion that the police did something wrong here?

pops up. Ready to indict the cops, as it were.

After reviewing the facts, however, I must say that the police acted with the utmost decorum and compassion.

The woman was wrong.
