The plant shutdowns that have cascaded through the auto industry as a result of the labor dispute at American Axle & Manufacturing have contributed to a rise in weekly unemployment claims across the nation, with new claims last week coming in among the highest this year.

Applications for unemployment insurance rose 6% or by 22,000 to 378,000 last week, compared with the previous week, and 7% compared with the last week of February, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics.
