SOMEONE, CHECK MY BLOOD PRESSURE!!!

CBS News: Katie: Gore Warms Up Hollywood
Posted by Katie Couric

(CBS)

....as the throngs of celebrities greeted Al Gore as a secular saint, I wondered if this might usher in a backlash against environmentalists. It wasn’t too long ago, afterall, that environmentalists were decried as tree-huggers, and former President Bush railed against them — trying to say it was the spotted owl against logging interests and jobs in the West.

Gore has repeatedly said the environment is not a Democratic or Republican issue; it’s a moral issue. But now that Hollywood has so completely embraced the former vice president, one wonders if this issue will be associated only with liberal causes. The Oscars may give Gore's critics ammunition to reject a school of thought that’s been validated by countless scientists worldwide. Some people I know latched on to a recent Gore global warming conference that was cancelled because of a snowstorm.

And yet, after a period of time of not conceding global warming even exists, President Bush used the term "climate change" for the first time and has talked about a way to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It seems like we’re reaching critical mass when it comes to this issue. And all the experts agree. Well, almost every expert. (There are a handful of scientists — many of them on the payroll of big oil companies — who wonder if global warming is a reality.)

But my fervent hope is that Hollywood’s embrace of Al Gore doesn’t give people an excuse to condemn and mock the effort — and oppose taking steps that we as a society need to take to deal with the issue of climate change. Some people find anything trendy repugnant, but this is a trend that’s really important....

1. hey, whatever your name is.....YOU and your kind are RESPONSIBLE
for the fact of Bush's being able to get anywhere near enough in the polls six and a half years ago to steal the election.

and your avid bashing of Kerry in 04 is still fresh in our memory.

so spare us your crocodile concern, and STFU!

mmkay?

7. wow! made my day!
now....this is almost a boilerplate response to any of these creatures, like KC, or Maureen Dowd, who are now starting to see the light, while conveniently forgetting how they acted during the last two elections, and most of the time in between.

all one really has to do is wait for one of these phonies to open their yaps, change the name from the last lying hypocrite
to the next one. the song remains the same

I can't remember how many times I've said pretty much the same thing about the likes of Tom Friedman, Joe Klein, Dowd, Frank Rich, and too many others to remember right now.

it IS infuriating, though, isn't it?

34. Absolutely. Can someone please tell me why it isn't common knowledge that
Gore won in 2000 but the SCOTUS interceded on the behalf of an illegitimate and TOTALLY INCOMPETENT/EVIL regime? I am amazed that I still must post evidence that Gore won FL on political blogs that allow both sides to post. It shows the bias and NEGLIGENCE of the fourth estate. They helped get us in this mess NOT Hollywood.

27. Egg-zackly!!! And what about the word "mock"? Since Gore was mocked constantly...
during the 2000 campaign, anything he's associated with will be mocked? Katie is so wrongheaded here in so many ways. I can't believe this woman sits in the CBS anchor chair -- what a travesty.

Maybe if Hollywood had told Al to go Cheney him self, we wouldn't have the potential dilemma of backlash, eh Katie?

I also noted the codewords "secular saint" in your column, couldn't using these words also cause a backlash from the evangelical types Kadie?

Regarding your "fervent hope" I just can't believe you're too fervent when you use subliminal words such as "trendy" to describe the looming catastrophe of global warming, there's nothing trendy about it, we are only talking about survival of the human race. Now if you want to catch us up to date on the status of Anna Nicole Smith's death or Brittany's latest hair doo, that would be trendy!

Edit for P.S. Divide and conquer is the game Kadie is playing.

20. Whaa...?
Lemme get what she's saying here, correct me if I'm wrong.

Because HOLLYWOOD gave Gore an award for a popular documentary, that means that Gore has just made a huge MISTAKE? That his enemies HAVE a REASON TO HATE HIM? Since WHEN, EXACTLY, have they NOT hated him?

And what's this SHIT about being a "secular saint"???????

WTF does this have to do with religion or lack thereof? :wtf:

My God, she doesn't get that reputation for being "a bit of fluff" from nowhere.

Clueless. Totally. Fucking. Clueless.

Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 08:54 AM by Chimichurri
and ideology riddled nuance was meant for right wing consumption. It's like when parents try to use slang to try to get their teenagers to bend to their will. I'm not saying she isn't one of them, I tend to be believe she's an empty shell who has no core beliefs and will say whatever to whomever she thinks will garner her ratings. This, however, was clearly marketed to right wing dolts who don't get it. We're already sold on global warming, it's the idiot holdouts she's speaking to who need a major wake up call.

I find her to be nothing more than an insincere, opportunistic talking head but any little bit of help on trying to enlighten the unenlightened gets a thumbs-up for trying in my book.

32. Vacuous...The Word That Comes To My Mind
Katie's way out of her league on this one...and that's a shame since there are so many more deserving journalists...male and female...who deserved the chance at walking in the legacy of Murrow, Cronkite and a once very proud CBS News.

I get the feeling she didn't write this...as you point...all the codewords and the self-flagulation is so typical right wing spin, this is meant to get Katie's name all over right wing hate radio...a cheap PR stunt and another foolhardy effort to appease the moonbats who never will be satisfied.

It's the bubble-heads like Couric that make me appreciate real journalists like Amy Goodman.
