Democrats look for legislative gains

HANDFUL OF SEATS WOULD RENDER GOP NEARLY IRRELEVANT

Despite some worries over continued sniping between the Clinton and Obama campaigns, state Democrats are predicting that an electorate energized this fall by the prospect of change in the White House could mean significant gains for them in the Legislature - possibly enough to alter the balance of power in the Capitol.

"Republicans are trembling all over America, including in the California state Legislature, that a Democratic tsunami is coming," said state Democratic Party campaign adviser Bob Mulholland .

If a wave does crash down on California, Democrats hope it sweeps through at least six Assembly and two Senate districts, which is what they'd need to capture a two-thirds majority in both houses. That would give them the power to pass budgets and taxes without Republican help.

As a sign of things to come, Democrats point to last week's congressional win by Bill Foster of Illinois, until then a relatively unknown and untested member of their party, in a special election to fill the seat of recently retired GOP House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

2. Jeanne Shaheen for Senate!
Senator John (Pigface) Sununu(R) of NH's 1st District is the most vulnerable Republican in the senate. Former governor Jeanne Shaheen (D) is running for his seat and is leading by double digits.
