A view of the heavily guarded Green Zone in Baghdad

Three US citizens working for the US government in Baghdad have been wounded in a mortar attack in the heavily-fortified Green Zone.

Rockets and mortars have been unleashed against the US-protected Green Zone in central Baghdad for the third day this week. US Embassy spokeswoman Mirembe Nantongo said three Americans were seriously injured on Wednesday.

A mortar or rocket round that apparently fell short also struck a minibus in the mainly Shia district of Karradah, killing at least two passengers and wounding seven others, according to police and hospital officials.

Iraq forces, militants clash in oil city

BASRA, Iraq, March 26 (Reuters) -

Militants loyal to Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr clashed with Iraqi security forces throughout Iraq's southern oil hub of Basra for a second day on Wednesday.

A health official said 40 people had been killed and 200 wounded in the first day of the clashes, including civilians, gunmen and Iraqi security forces.

Police said heavy gunbattles between the two sides restarted early Wednesday in five districts of the city after a brief lull, as the Iraqi military continued its operation to clear the city of armed gunmen.

Mortar or rocket attacks struck Iraqi security forces checkpoints and bases regularly.

Many towns and cities across southern Iraq were under a night-time curfew as authorities sought to prevent further outbreaks of violence.

Ground commander Major-General Ali Zaidan told Reuters his forces had killed more than 30 militants on the first day of the operation, which began before dawn on Tuesday. More than 25 were wounded and around 50 were captured, he said.

"The operation is still going on and will not stop until it achieves its objectives," he said. "It is on the same scale as yesterday."

Police said a roadside bomb exploded near a car in northern Basra early on Wednesday killing all of the passengers.

"Now there is heavy gunfire and I have heard the sounds of explosions. I also saw a group of gunmen planting roadside bombs," said Abbas, a Basra resident who would only give his first name.

In Baghdad there have also been clashes in Sadr city, a poor, crowded area that is a major base of support for Sadr's followers.

A source at Sadr City's Imam Ali hospital said four bodies and 25 wounded arrived overnight.

U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Steven Stover said two members of the Iraqi security forces were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in Sadr City late on Tuesday.

U.S. forces reinforced the checkpoint. A U.S. Stryker armoured vehicle was also destroyed by a roadside bomb in Sadr City, and there were several rocket attacks in the area overnight, he said.

The clashes have threatened a ceasefire Sadr imposed on his Mehdi Army militia last August.

Sadr, an influential leader who has not been seen in public for months, issued a statement calling on Iraqis to stage sit-ins all over Iraq and said he would declare "civil revolt" if attacks by U.S. and Iraqi forces continued.

Streets in Basra were largely empty except for Iraqi security forces, and shops remained closed. At least four Iraqi helicopters could be seen hovering over the city.

"The situation is so tense. I did not go to work today. Nobody is going to work," said Kareem, a Basra resident who would only give his first name. "There are gunmen at every intersection."

3. We're going to see in the next few days
what a crock of festering goo the whole "the surge is working" lie really is. McSame is fully tied to b* in that regard and it would be nice to see his campaign go down in flames if it weren't so tragic and deadly awful for our service members, while the country again realizes that they've been lied to once again by the chief thief.

5. I think we've been seeing it all along...
I mean, they have whole neighborhoods blocked off with cement walls, basically imprisoning
the people that live there and then they say the "surge" is working. What a load of BS!!!

14. Could this be a repeat of the ....."Tet Offensive.."
40 years ago, all the lies about Viet Nam, were high lighted by the so called .."Tet Offensive" When it was over, everyone knew what a pack of lies Johnson's whole policy was. Everything was a lie..

Of course, many knew that ahead of time, yet the main stream finally came on board, and it was indeed the beginning of the end..Maybe this will do it, maybe not?

A Mehdi Army fighter heads for cover in the southern city of Basra during a second
day of fighting with Iraqi security forces that has claimed more than 40 lives.

The Shia Mehdi Army is led by the young firebrand cleric Moqtada Sadr, whose
supporters - pictured here in a Basra residential area - are known as Sadrists.

With the city under curfew, many of the normally bustling streets are virtually deserted.
Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has given militants 72 hours to lay down their arms.

Fighting across several Basra districts has been stoked by a variety of militias and
criminal gangs, say correspondents, and the violence has spread to other parts of Iraq.

Iraqi security forces have also been battling Shia militants in Baghdad.
Five Iraqi civilians have been killed and many more injured.

Jamila market in the Iraqi capital's sprawling Shia slum of Sadr City was destroyed
overnight as Mehdi Army fighters clashed with American and Iraqi soldiers.

Iraqi children flash the victory sign next to debris from a US armoured
personnel carrier hit overnight by a roadside bomb in Sadr City.

A Sadrist carries a copy of the Koran and an olive branch during a rally in the Shia holy
city of Karbala. The writing on the placard reads: "Reward good deeds with good deeds."

A man in Baghdad with prayer beads before a poster of Moqtada Sadr's
father, another Shia cleric, who was assassinated in 1999.

Elsewhere in the country - including here in Najaf - there have been protests
by Sadr supporters, who say his militias are being unfairly targeted by authorities.

One demand is that all detainees be released. This woman - at a protest in Dora, Baghdad -
is displaying a picture of her detained son and her grandchildren, killed in a mortar attack.

The Mehdi Army had been observing a ceasefire, which analysts say contributed to the
recent decline of violence in Iraq. They now say the ceasefire is in danger of collapse.

Mosques urged people to join the protests.

But the demonstrators' ire is not reserved for the Iraqi authorities alone.
Anger at US forces in Iraq was expressed in Najaf...

... and in Amil, Baghdad, where they held signs reading "No to America, yes to Iraq".

US says Iran behind violence in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AFP) —

Iran is behind the violence raging in Iraq by providing training to those firing rockets in Baghdad
and by not doing enough to rein in lawless gunmen in Basra, the US military charged Wednesday.

"There is no question that the government of Iran has significant influence in Basra, in the province
and in southeastern Iraq in general," said US military spokesman Major General Kevin Bergner.

21. Interesting, considering the Iraqi gov't welcomes Iranian support
...and we prop up the Iraqi gov't. Who is the real tool here?

The US gov't likes the situation it's created just fine as it fits their agenda for endless, profitable war. It also gives them an excuse to go after Iran, if indeed that's what they intend to do.
