Poll question: Are you openly homophobic? |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 12:54 AM by JackBeck
Just curious how a progressive website feels about the issue.
Clearly, there is somewhat of a difference of opinion around here as of late.

2. Since you're in early, care to offer some more "positive" choices? |
|
I still can edit the poll

It is a de facto "word" commonly recognized by virtually everyone speaking English. And it's in my dictionary, with a complete definition and origin. If I'd wanted to be more formal, I'd have used "you're not." As a former magazine editor, I get it. Thanks for your help, though.

It gets boring over here. It seems exciting over there.
Everyone thinks I'm from California anyway so I have to figure out why that is.

|
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 12:33 AM by Atman
No, I don't have any alternatives. I just think it's a weird question/poll.
It is obviously a push poll. There is really only one "correct" answer, and the poll is designed to elicit that answer. I just think it's silly.

|
That's what I meant by "flame bait." What did you "give me a chance" to do, vote the "correct" way? You're absolutely right, there are lots of homophobes on DU, just as in the outside world. But this poll just seems pointless. The way it is written, why not just ask "are you a homophobe?" I don't understand why you're being coy about it.

You said that these were all negative choices. I gave you the opportunity to suggest other poll answers and you declined.
I don't know what else to say to you except look at what you said in the past 20 minutes.

21. Sorry, it wasn't my poll, and I had no other choices to suggest! |
|
It seemed pretty clear what answer you were looking for. What did you need my suggestions for?
For the record, I'm entirely 100% supportive of the GLBT community. I think "civil unions" are bullshit. Full marriage rights for any two people who want to commit to a life together. I just don't like the manipulative nature of the poll!

you don't think progressives can be closet homophobes?
Lots of so-called progressives think that homophobes can be closeted gays.
I find this a fair question.

That's all I'm saying. Believe me, no sweat, I understand what you're getting at. I just don't like how all the answers -- except the one you want -- are antagonistic and negative.

5. Very much a supporter of LGBTQ equality, though like most heteros.... |
|
I'm sure I'm guilty of my fair share of heterosexism. But I'm also conscious of it, and very much of the belief that inequality for anyone diminishes my rights as well.

Sometimes, I get angry that heterosexuals are allowed to express themselves as a couple more openly than me and my husband are allowed. But I consciously respect that they should be allowed as much as we are. Unfortunately, my support of them is rarely returned.

It's the common everyday things that I notice - and I'm sure gay men and women notice 1,000x more than I do. It's the puzzled stares I got from people at work when I told them excitedly that I saw Brokeback Mountain and it was a great movie - and many of these people are very supportive of gay rights. One guy, a generally good liberal, just flat out refused to go see it because he was afraid someone "would see him." There really is such a thing as "straight privilege." Just about everything in society is set up so that straight=normal.

Humans evolve in such an amazing way. And my dad died when I was 23, 10 years ago.
My dad was a total racist and homophobe. But as he was dying, he made my husband promise to "take care of my son". He finally understood, but I think he was just holding out until I came to my sense and found the right guy.

30. Yes... what would be awesome is |
|
if people didn't have to go through life changing events in order to recognize heterosexuality and homosexuality as normal expressions of human sexuality.
In my case, it was a mixture between education (literature has made me a better person, and has "saved" my sense of humanity) and personal experiences with gay, lesbian and bisexual people (thanks, Melissa, wherever you might be, for the lesson in friendship, solidarity and humanity).

. . . great, lifelong homosexual friends, active campaigning for equal rights for all, taking two weeks off work to campaign against Colorado's notorious Amendment 2
Then, suddenly a few weeks ago I'm informed that I'm homophobic.

I'm a perfectly straight guy, been a musician and spent a lot of time in the entertainment biz, so I have had to work with gay people on a lot of productions over the years, never bothered me, never a problem.
I don't think I'd be comfortable sitting through a gay porno flick,I'm not really bothered by a gay couple walking along holding hands or kissing in the park or whatever, but the whole thing just isn't really my cup of tea all in all.
My gay friends are just as welcome in my home as anyone else.
However, when it comes to equal rights for gay couples, I'm 100% for that. I can see NO legitimate reason for our government to impede such rights. I think the whole resistance is just bullshit religious bigotry and has no place in a free society with seperation of church and state. Makes no sense to me, the issue should have been settled and we should have been able to move forward a long time ago.
That's what I think and this will probably be the only time I say it here. If there is anything "homophobic" in anything I've said, sorry for my insensitivity.
