A gay liberal female is hosting a major cable news program...think about that for a second.
And she's doing a great job.
Every time I think all is lost, I see something like this and it restores my faith.
Just a little bit.

Rachel is really hitting her stride 15 minutes in.
She's so poised.
So smart.
So confident.
I love her to death.

This would not have been possible even a few short years ago.

She's so much more worthy of a wider audience then all of the right wing pukes in TV's vast wasteland.
Anyone notice the conspicuous absence of one Pat Buchanan from MSNBC the past week or so?

Maybe the tide is turning.
Money will always follow popularity.
Countdown is MSNBC's highest rated show.
Maybe we're going to see more of this and less of Killer Joe and his ilk.

Go Rachel!

She's very open about being a lesbian. Which makes her hosting a news program that much more awesome.

17. Nothing except
Up until now, she would have been disqualified for it. If the network knew she was a lesbian, she would have been kept down. So, seeing her sexual orientation be ignored in favor of her abilities is a good thing.

Regardless of your sexuality, it isn't a "choice".

Besides, the character of an LGBT person consists of more than just a sexual act.

25. Being gay or lesbian isn't about whom you choose to sleep with.
And in the event you missed it, GLBT people are second class citizens in many ways in the United States.

For one to gain a prominent public role is meaningful.

I hadn't thought about the implications of her being gay, really, but you may be on to something. I really don't think about all that when I see or hear Rachel--I just think about, as you say, how smart, quick, and cool she is. She is a powerful progressive voice and I just love her, too.

I have NO idea what you're talking about.

I don't have the "Main-stream-media" telling (SHOUTING) at me what to think anymore. It's quite a liberating experience. Perhaps you should try it.

Simply turn off your tee-vee. It's as easy as quitting smoking, I promise ;-)

50. Just so you know
I've known many who take the no TV approach and after a few years you become a person who says 'I have NO idea what you are talking about' in regard to almost every subject.

So moderation can be a great thing. I watch BBC news and Democracy Now with Amy Goodman on American TV daily, and a constant stream of documentaries and great cinema. No one shouts at me while I am watching a Felleni festival and there really are fantasic bits of television out there that should not be missed. Loving the multi-part HBO 'John Adams' series for example. If you think it is all shouting, maybe the volume was up too high.

Rachel Maddow is awesome! She has a great voice for tv and radio, she is educated, treats her audience like they are smart people, and she is pretty and is well dressed and made-up. She is very pleasant and those idiotic former beauty queens at FOX don't even come close.

BUT - maybe she's being positioned as the permanent guest host. Allison Stewart is on NPR now, with not much of a profile on MSNBC anymore, and I seem to remember seeing somewhere recently that she's pregnant.

I think Rachel did beautifully tonight! REALLY like her! Elegant, intelligent, poised, quick-witted, REALLY nice! If it was her debut or her "audition," she passed!

i bet she'll never be seen guest hosting on countdown again. she's too good, it's gotta make even keith nervous. ;-)

i was hoping that rachel was going to fill the slot vacated by tucker, but in retrosepect, it's probably best that she didn't. i already have to juggle everything so i can watch keith - if i had to try to work in another hour a day for rachel... well, it would just be too difficult. i hope she is going to be his regular sub - that would be the best possible scenario.

Credit where it is due. Fantastic stand-up comedy. I wish her show would be canceled so she would be forced to get back into stand-up.

Rachel's fine, but I do get a little tired of her "faux amazement." Too much one-note-wonder stuff from her. She is smart enough to play it completely straight, but she has to appeal to yahoos.

36. maybe I've gone too far ahead.
I keep thinking people should be role models for their character and talents, not skin color, or beauty, or sex, or sexual orientation etc. But WHO they are and what they contribute.

Please understand, I'm glad the powers that be have finally decided to stop being bigotted asshats. And I very much like Rachel Maddow. I don't mean to minimize all that. I understand all too well how living in a bigotted world influences who a person is - and I expect her character and views are colored by the awful way our society treats homosexuals. -- But I hope at least progressives can be happy a person of talent is on the teevee not a "gay woman".

I'm not really good with words most of the time, but I hope you can understand what I mean.

bona fide Ph.D. on cable television. Oxford. I just know that as a member of a community (some would argue that there is no such thing as a LGBT "community"--I disagree), I'm very proud of her success. She doesn't hide who she is. In terms of our community's history, that's a pretty big deal.

the part of me subjected to bigotry is unhidable. I wasn't thinking about that aspect of being gay in America and I apologize. It makes sense now. And yes I so grasp how an openly gay person being welcomed mainstream for their talents might feel like a wonderful step in the right direction.

Again. sorry. - and I appreciate the patient nudge in the right direction.

It really is cool.

She's hard not to love. My wife and I have a bit of a crush on her. The kids are to be absolutely silent whenever she is speaking. Keith and Barack too, but she's on the "would you be quiet, child" list. Very few people make it on to that list. :)

Oh, I also noticed about Pat...good riddance. I hated that unbelievable bastard, and was one of those who wrote MSNBC after that crap he posted online. Glad my request did some good.

And I HAVE noticed him GONE...and it's been a pleasure.

and here's hoping she gets her own show, not instead of Keith but as a complement to his, as yet another progressive voice breaking through the right wing stranglehold on the mass media...In a way I couldn't care less that she's gay but it at the same time its a positive sign that an openly gay person is doing what she's doing with that kind of national exposure.
