An email I just got regarding my last column, Remember: They Are Liars...

"Your silly column amazed me. Of course none of the people you mention were liars regarding Iraq's WMD. Everyone thought Saddam had WMD, including Saddam's own generals. There were no lies."

Everyone thought he had them, you say?

Wrong.

That book was published in the fall of 2002. It reads, on pp. 9-10, as follows:

The case for war against Iraq has not been made. This is a fact. It is doubtful in the extreme that Saddam Hussein has retained any functional aspect of the chemical, nuclear, and biological weapons programs so thoroughly dismantled by the United Nations weapons inspectors who worked tirelessly in Iraq for seven years. This is also a fact. The idea that Hussein has connections to fundamentalist Islamic terrorists is laughable—he is a secular leader who has worked for years to crush fundamentalist Islam within Iraq, and if he were to give weapons of any kind to Qaeda, they would use those weapons on him first.

The coalition that came together for the Gulf War is nonexistent today, and a vast majority of the international community stands furiously against another war on Iraq. If Bush decides unilaterally to attack, he will be in violation of international law. If Bush does attack Iraq, he will precipitate the exact conflict of cultures between the West and Islam that Osama bin Laden was hoping for when his agents flew three planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. An attack on Iraq could bring about a wider world war America cannot afford, and that a vast majority of Americans do not desire. These are facts.

The economic sanctions have rendered his conventional weaponry impotent by denying him access to the spare parts that are essential to any functioning mechanized military. The UNSCOM inspectors destroyed, right to the ground, any and all capabilities he possessed to create weapons of mass destruction. He has no connections whatsoever to the terrorists who struck America on September 11th. Saddam Hussein is not capable of acting upon any of his desires, real or imagined. He does not have the horses.

Nobody lied?

Um...

"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction."

- Dick Cheney, Vice President
Speech to VFW National Convention
8/26/2002

"There is already a mountain of evidence that Saddam Hussein is gathering weapons for the purpose of using them. And adding additional information is like adding a foot to Mount Everest."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Response to Question From Press
9/6/2002

"We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud."

- Condoleeza Rice, US National Security Advisor
CNN Late Edition
9/8/2002

"Right now, Iraq is expanding and improving facilities that were used for the production of biological weapons."

- George W. Bush, President
Speech to UN General Assembly
9/12/2002

"Iraq has stockpiled biological and chemical weapons, and is rebuilding the facilities used to make more of those weapons. We have sources that tell us that Saddam Hussein recently authorized Iraqi field commanders to use chemical weapons -- the very weapons the dictator tells us he does not have."

- George W. Bush, President
Radio Address
10/5/2002

"The Iraqi regime...possesses and produces chemical and biological weapons. It is seeking nuclear weapons. We know that the regime has produced thousands of tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas, sarin nerve gas, VX nerve gas."

- George W. Bush, President
Cincinnati, Ohio Speech
10/7/2002

"And surveillance photos reveal that the regime is rebuilding facilities that it had used to produce chemical and biological weapons."

- George W. Bush, President
Cincinnati, Ohio Speech
10/7/2002

"After eleven years during which we have tried containment, sanctions, inspections, even selected military action, the end result is that Saddam Hussein still has chemical and biological weapons and is increasing his capabilities to make more. And he is moving ever closer to developing a nuclear weapon."

- George W. Bush, President
Cincinnati, Ohio Speech
10/7/2002

"We've also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical or biological weapons across broad areas."

- George W. Bush, President
Cincinnati, Ohio Speech
10/7/2002

"Iraq, despite UN sanctions, maintains an aggressive program to rebuild the infrastructure for its nuclear, chemical, biological, and missile programs. In each instance, Iraq's procurement agents are actively working to obtain both weapons-specific and dual-use materials and technologies critical to their rebuilding and expansion efforts, using front companies and whatever illicit means are at hand."

- John Bolton, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control
Speech to the Hudson Institute
11/1/2002

"We estimate that once Iraq acquires fissile material -- whether from a foreign source or by securing the materials to build an indigenous fissile material capability -- it could fabricate a nuclear weapon within one year. It has rebuilt its civilian chemical infrastructure and renewed production of chemical warfare agents, probably including mustard, sarin, and VX. It actively maintains all key aspects of its offensive BW program."

- John Bolton, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control
Speech to the Hudson Institute
11/1/2002

"Iraq could decide on any given day to provide biological or chemical weapons to a terrorist group or to individual terrorists...The war on terror will not be won until Iraq is completely and verifiably deprived of weapons of mass destruction."

- Dick Cheney, Vice President
Denver, Address To Air National Guard
12/1/2002

"If he declares he has none, then we will know that Saddam Hussein is once again misleading the world."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Press Briefing
12/2/2002

"The president of the United States and the secretary of defense would not assert as plainly and bluntly as they have that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction if it was not true, and if they did not have a solid basis for saying it."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Response to Question From Press
12/4/2002

"We know for a fact that there are weapons there."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Press Briefing
1/9/2003

"I am absolutely convinced, based on the information that's been given to me, that the weapon of mass destruction which can kill more people than an atomic bomb -- that is, biological weapons -- is in the hands of the leadership of Iraq."

- Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
MSNBC Interview
1/10/2003

"What is unique about Iraq compared to, I would argue, any other country in the world, in this juncture, is the exhaustion of diplomacy thus far, and, No. 2, this intersection of weapons of mass destruction."

- Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
NewsHour Interview
1/22/2003

"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production."

- George W. Bush, President
State of the Union Address
1/28/2003

"Our intelligence officials estimate that Saddam Hussein had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent."

- George W. Bush, President
State of the Union Address
1/28/2003

"We know that Saddam Hussein is determined to keep his weapons of mass destruction, is determined to make more."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
Remarks to UN Security Council
2/5/2003

"There can be no doubt that Saddam Hussein has biological weapons and the capability to rapidly produce more, many more. And he has the ability to dispense these lethal poisons and diseases in ways that can cause massive death and destruction. If biological weapons seem too terrible to contemplate, chemical weapons are equally chilling."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
Addresses the U.N. Security Council
2/5/2003

"In Iraq, a dictator is building and hiding weapons that could enable him to dominate the Middle East and intimidate the civilized world -- and we will not allow it."

- George W. Bush, President
Speech to the American Enterprise Institute
2/26/2003

"If Iraq had disarmed itself, gotten rid of its weapons of mass destruction over the past 12 years, or over the last several months since (UN Resolution) 1441 was enacted, we would not be facing the crisis that we now have before us...But the suggestion that we are doing this because we want to go to every country in the Middle East and rearrange all of its pieces is not correct."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
Interview with Radio France International
2/28/2003

"I am not eager to send young Americans into harm's way in Iraq, or to see innocent people killed or hurt in military operations. Given all of the facts and circumstances known to us, however, I am convinced that if we wait, a threat will continue to materialize in Iraq that could cause incalculable damage to world peace in general, and to the United States in particular."

- Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
Letter to Future of Freedom Foundation
3/1/2003

"Iraq is a grave threat to this nation. It desires to acquire and use weapons of mass terror and is run by a despot with a proven record of willingness to use them. Iraq has had 12 years to comply with UN requirements for disarmament and has failed to do so. The president is right to say it's time has run out."

- Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
Senate Speech
3/7/2003

"So has the strategic decision been made to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction by the leadership in Baghdad? I think our judgment has to be clearly not."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
Remarks to UN Security Council
3/7/2003

"Getting rid of Saddam Hussein's regime is our best inoculation. Destroying once and for all his weapons of disease and death is a vaccination for the world."

- Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
Washington Post op-ed
3/16/2003

"Let's talk about the nuclear proposition for a minute. We know that based on intelligence, that has been very, very good at hiding these kinds of efforts. He's had years to get good at it and we know he has been absolutely devoted to trying to acquire nuclear weapons. And we believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons."

- Dick Cheney, Vice President
Meet The Press
3/16/2003

"Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised."

- George W. Bush, President

- Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
Senate Debate

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary

- Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
Speech to American Israel Political Action Committee
3/31/2003

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Press Conference
4/9/2003

"You bet we're concerned about it. And one of the reasons it's important is because the nexus between terrorist states with weapons of mass destruction...and terrorist groups -- networks -- is a critical link. And the thought that...some of those materials could leave the country and in the hands of terrorist networks would be a very unhappy prospect. So it is important to us to see that that doesn't happen."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Press Conference
4/9/2003

"Obviously the administration intends to publicize all the weapons of mass destruction U.S. forces find -- and there will be plenty."

- Robert Kagan, Neocon scholar
Washington Post op-ed
4/9/2003

"I think you have always heard, and you continue to hear from officials, a measure of high confidence that, indeed, the weapons of mass destruction will be found."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Press Briefing
4/10/2003

"But make no mistake -- as I said earlier -- we have high confidence that they have weapons of mass destruction. That is what this war was about and it is about. And we have high confidence it will be found."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Press Briefing
4/10/2003

"Were not going to find anything until we find people who tell us where the things are. And we have that very high on our priority list, to find the people who know. And when we do, then well learn precisely where things were and what was done."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Meet the Press
4/13/2003

"I have absolute confidence that there are weapons of mass destruction inside this country. Whether we will turn out, at the end of the day, to find them in one of the 2,000 or 3,000 sites we already know about or whether contact with one of these officials who we may come in contact with will tell us, 'Oh, well, there's actually another site,' and we'll find it there, I'm not sure."

- General Tommy Franks, Commander in Chief Central Command
Fox News
4/13/2003

"We are learning more as we interrogate or have discussions with Iraqi scientists and people within the Iraqi structure, that perhaps he destroyed some, perhaps he dispersed some. And so we will find them."

- George W. Bush, President
NBC Interview
4/24/2003

"There are people who in large measure have information that we need...so that we can track down the weapons of mass destruction in that country."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Press Briefing
4/25/2003

"We'll find them. It'll be a matter of time to do so."

5/4/2003

"We never believed that we'd just tumble over weapons of mass destruction in that country."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Fox News Interview
5/4/2003

"I'm not surprised if we begin to uncover the weapons program of Saddam Hussein -- because he had a weapons program."

"U.S. officials never expected that 'we were going to open garages and find' weapons of mass destruction."

- Condoleeza Rice, US National Security Advisor
Reuters Interview
5/12/2003

- Maj. Gen. David Petraeus, Commander 101st Airborne
Press Briefing
5/13/2003

"We said all along that we will never get to the bottom of the Iraqi WMD program simply by going and searching specific sites, that you'd have to be able to get people who know about the programs to talk to you."

- Paul Wolfowitz, Deputy Secretary of Defense
Interview with Australian Broadcasting
5/13/2003

"Before the war, there's no doubt in my mind that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, biological and chemical. I expected them to be found. I still expect them to be found."

- Gen. Michael Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps
Interview with Reporters
5/21/2003

5/26/2003

"They may have had time to destroy them, and I don't know the answer."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Remarks to Council on Foreign Relations
5/27/2003

"For bureaucratic reasons, we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction (as justification for invading Iraq) because it was the one reason everyone could agree on."

- Paul Wolfowitz, Deputy Secretary of Defense
Vanity Fair interview
5/28/2003

"The President is indeed satisfied with the intelligence that he received. And I think that's borne out by the fact that, just as Secretary Powell described at the United Nations, we have found the bio trucks that can be used only for the purpose of producing biological weapons. That's proof-perfect that the intelligence in that regard was right on target."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Press Briefing
5/29/2003

"We have teams of people that are out looking. They've investigated a number of sites. And within the last week or two, they have in fact captured and have in custody two of the mobile trailers that Secretary Powell talked about at the United Nations as being biological weapons laboratories."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Infinity Radio Interview
5/30/2003

- George W. Bush, President
Press Briefing
5/30/2003

"It was a surprise to me then -- it remains a surprise to me now -- that we have not uncovered weapons, as you say, in some of the forward dispersal sites. Believe me, it's not for lack of trying. We've been to virtually every ammunition supply point between the Kuwaiti border and Baghdad, but they're simply not there."

- Lt. Gen. James Conway, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force
Press Interview
5/30/2003

"Do I think we're going to find something? Yeah, I kind of do, because I think there's a lot of information out there."

- Maj. Gen. Keith Dayton, Defense Intelligence Agency
Press Conference
5/30/2003

"This wasn't material I was making up, it came from the intelligence community."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
Press Briefing
6/2/2003

"We recently found two mobile biological weapons facilities which were capable of producing biological agents. This is the man who spent decades hiding tools of mass murder. He knew the inspectors were looking for them. You know better than me he's got a big country in which to hide them. We're on the look. We'll reveal the truth."

- George W. Bush, President Camp Sayliya, Qatar
6/5/2003

"I would put before you Exhibit A, the mobile biological labs that we have found. People are saying, 'Well, are they truly mobile biological labs?' Yes, they are. And the DCI, George Tenet, Director of Central Intelligence, stands behind that assessment."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
Fox News Interview
6/8/2003

"No one ever said that we knew precisely where all of these agents were, where they were stored."

- Condoleeza Rice, US National Security Advisor
Meet the Press
6/8/2003

"What the president has said is because it's been the long-standing view of numerous people, not only in this country, not only in this administration, but around the world, including at the United Nations, who came to those conclusions...And the president is not going to engage in the rewriting of history that others may be trying to engage in."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Response to Question From Press
6/9/2003

"Iraq had a weapons program...Intelligence throughout the decade showed they had a weapons program. I am absolutely convinced with time we'll find out they did have a weapons program."

- George W. Bush, President
Comment to Reporters
6/9/2003

"The biological weapons labs that we believe strongly are biological weapons labs, we didn't find any biological weapons with those labs. But should that give us any comfort? Not at all. Those were labs that could produce biological weapons whenever Saddam Hussein might have wanted to have a biological weapons inventory."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
Associated Press Interview
6/12/2003

"Those documents were only one piece of evidence in a larger body of evidence suggesting that Iraq attempted to purchase uranium from Africa...The issue of Iraq's pursuit of uranium in Africa is supported by multiple sources of intelligence. The other sources of evidence did and do support the president's statement."

- Sean McCormack, National Security Council Spokesman
Statement to press
6/13/2003

"My personal view is that their intelligence has been, I'm sure, imperfect, but good. In other words, I think the intelligence was correct in general, and that you always will find out precisely what it was once you get on the ground and have a chance to talk to people and explore it, and I think that will happen."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Press Briefing
6/18/2003

"I have reason, every reason, to believe that the intelligence that we were operating off was correct and that we will, in fact, find weapons or evidence of weapons, programs, that are conclusive. But that's just a matter of time...It's now less than eight weeks since the end of major combat in Iraq and I believe that patience will prove to be a virtue."

- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
Pentagon media briefing
6/24/2003

MS. BLOCK: There were no toxins found in those trailers. SECRETARY POWELL: Which could mean one of several things: one, they hadn't been used yet to develop toxins; or, secondly, they had been sterilized so thoroughly that there is no residual left. It may well be that they hadn't been used yet.

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
All Things Considered, Interview
6/27/2003

"That was the concern we had with Saddam Hussein. Not only did he have weapons -- and we'll uncover not only his weapons but all of his weapons programs -- he never lost the intent to have these kinds of weapons."

- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
All Things Considered, Interview
6/27/2003

"I think the burden is on those people who think he didn't have weapons of mass destruction to tell the world where they are."

- Ari Fleischer, Press Secretary
Press Briefing
7/9/2003

61. You think Iraq is bad? Wait till Bush attacks Iran!
I'm NOT kidding folks - it's the same script different last letter.

Fallon resigns

Bush cuts off Iranian banks

Cheney travels to Saudi Arabia and after he leaves Saudi newspapers print articles on how to protect yourself from nuclear fall-out

Bush travels to Russia and trades an attack on Iran for not building a "missile defense system" in Eastern Europe

Two nuclear subs join a fleet now larger than before invasion of Iraq

Troops mass along Iran boarder as new fighting breaks out in Basra

Betrayus makes claims Iran is behind attacks on Green Zone

Betrayus and Crocker testify for two days with every other word Iran

Both Washington Post and New York Times splash headline stories "Iran The New Enemy"

Bush strangely starts buying oil for National Strategic Reserve at record volumes when oil is at it's highest - stock-piling it when he should be releasing it.

All the usual suspects are out screaming Iran! Iran! Iran!

Think - with all that's starting to fall apart there is no way these cretins are going to hand power over to anyone that would threaten them. An attack on Iran serves several purposes, it throws all investigations on a back burner, eliminates Obama and elevates McInsane to POTUS, accelerates crashing economy to usher in AMERO and police state.

Whatever we do the ONE most important is to STOP this ATTACK ON IRAN! And DON'T tell me it can't happen because I heard that ALL BEFORE and it ALWAYS HAPPENS!

11. The RW Machine has revved up the Muslims Are Out To Take Over
propaganda and how we will all be forced to convert or die. I've had two just this week. One, is very graphic about cutting off heads and other tactics.

This morning, I received one of a British video and how they have taken over and are demanding their rights be met in many areas. Beware!

They are going to keep the Muslim images in our faces until Obama loses. I've never seen anything like this RW machine.

I don't know whether it is best to combat it or ignore it.

99. DID DU care when the Clinton Administration was lying to us??

"Saddam's goal ... is to achieve the lifting of U.N. sanctions while retaining and enhancing Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs. We cannot, we must not and we will not let him succeed." -- Madeline Albright, 1998

"(Saddam) will rebuild his arsenal of weapons of mass destruction and some day, some way, I am certain he will use that arsenal again, as he has 10 times since 1983" -- National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, Feb 18, 1998

"The community of nations may see more and more of the very kind of threat Iraq poses now: a rogue state with weapons of mass destruction, ready to use them or provide them to terrorists. If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow." -- Bill Clinton in 1998

"I am absolutely convinced that there are weapons...I saw evidence back in 1998 when we would see the inspectors being barred from gaining entry into a warehouse for three hours with trucks rolling up and then moving those trucks out." -- Clinton's Secretary of Defense William Cohen in April of 2003

Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 12:36 AM by xxqqqzme
over this very topic. He kept saying 'no one knew they were lying'; 'we all thought Saddam had WMD'. I finally stood up and said You are insulting a roomful of people (it was a democratic club meeting) who knew b*sh was lying; that there would be no WMD found. You should be careful with no one knew....' He looked at me and said 'how did you know that' - God man it was all over the internet if you cared to look. The internet was not used extensively THEN, he said

I understood then why I have never taken the LAT.

You realize, of course, that these people will continue to deny and insist and assert til their dying breath that they were certainly correct, they just knew, he did, TOO, have WMD. They can't admit they fucked up. They have to maintain the facade, because that's enough to win them yet another free pass from many of their most gullible followers. It's the certainty, stupid. This can all be overlooked and brushed off because they were damned sure! You and I will look at all this without distortion lenses and rose-colored glasses, because we always knew this was bullshit. We hadn't drunk the Kool-aid and weren't about to. And for the others, I suspect, they will stand firm because to fail to do so will signify weakness. And for heaven's sakes, we can't show weakness now, can we?

23. And what about...
...the rest of the nations, who looked at the "evidence" and decided it was insufficient to join our "coalition of the coerced" -- the majority of which sent a few soldiers in exchange for a big pile of taxpayer dollars? And what about Hans Blitz needing just a couple of more weeks to complete his search for WMD but being recalled because we just couldn't possibly wait for his report (because he was going to report that there was nothing there)?

These administration liars wanted to go to war, and they led us there with cherry-picked intelligence and fear-mongering. They and their cronies have profited, while soldiers have died and been maimed, innocent Iraqis have been killed or displaced, and future generations of American taxpayers have become indebted to pay for the debacle, plus interest.

Why aren't these people being tried for war crimes? What is wrong with the Democratic majority who were sent to stop the war and impeach the criminal administration officials? Why aren't we all taking to the streets to demand a stop to this madness?

57. Spot on ...
"Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. ...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." ~ Hermann Wilhelm Göring at the Nuremberg trials (sound familar? IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH!)

Breathe slowly, let the air move from within to without, then from without to within. Take each muscle group (except anal and urethral sphincters) and feel it move from tense to relaxed, then concentrate on the calmness that will envelope you. Now float into movement, and smile ...

As your opponent moves into range imagine his testicles are a football and you are trying for a 50 yard field goal. Move swiftly but unhurriedly, swing your leg smoothly let your foot carress the cloth of his gusset accelerate through that impediment as if the contact you seak is 4 inches higher than in reality and ....

70. i could have written every word of this.
every word. i recall being tired on election night and saying, no, no, i have to vote, bush can't be president or he will throw a war...telling my ex-daughter-in-law after she had watched colin powell testify, he's lying, they're lying, there's no way. it's been just a long time of watching the bad guys win and knowing all the suffering destruction and death that has and will continue to ensue at their hands.

and where is congress?!?!?! my latest frustration watching the latest hearings is the word "surge." it WAS AND IS AN ESCALATION OF THE WAR. yet not once not from one senator or congressperson did i hear it characterized as WHAT IT IS. i think obama may have said "so-called surge." yet even he as did every single committee member, began his questions with "thank you for your support and sacrifice blah blah blah." fuck the courtesy. it is not polite to invade someone else's country, kill its citizens, displace them, destroy their infrastructure, and then say you're doing it for their own good. where is congress?!?!?!?

and then one of my oldest friends. her take on it is that there were WMDs and they just got hidden in Syria. swear to gawd. and this particular person is a member of a so called "church" and considers herself a christian. i mean a good christian. unreal.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgh is right.

45. You know what would have worked better?
Look at the e-mail. What is it saying? that EVERYBODY thought there were WMDs (and so no one was lying because they all thought it true. yes it's the "i'm not lying, just stupid" defense but to a con this works.)

So listing quotes from people saying that there were WMDs doesn't mean much to the cons. ok, no evidence will mean much to the cons because they think reality is subjective. But still.

Posting quotes from people saying they believed there were WMDs does not counter the claim that everybody thought there were WMDs.

But posting quotes and links from people who didn't think there were WMDs and what they based those judgments on would. because then we have evidence that a reasonable person should have known if given the facts.

I mean, I sure didn't think there were WMDs. i knew Shrub was lying. And I am certain I wasn't the only one.

In fact, that's a good OP right there. Contrast what the right (who were way wrong) was saying before the war with what everybody opposed to the war (who were right) were saying at that same time.

If you or somebody else hasn't or doesn't, I probably should. Though lets face it, you probably already have more info on this then I do.

Although I did help hand a few out one day :-)

It is not that amazing how true all of this book truly is but it truly is sad.

That being said I have two problems with the section cited above

1. the second paragraph was not fact at the time. It did become fact, as any reasonable person would expect, but it was not fact at the time

2. UNSCOM did destroy most of the WMD facilities and operations (odd how UNMOVIC was in Iraq before the war but still couldn't find anything)but it turns out that "Operation Desert Fox" supposedly "Wag the Dog" did in fact destroy the operation or HOPES of rekindling it- as noted in "Fiasco"

I haven't shared my copy of the book yet but it is like a horrifically ghoulish trump card to anyone who talks shit in my house.

Her read this-you should have known better, I did.

Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 12:06 AM by DUlover2909
Do they have tanks? Do they have an air force? Do they have a navy? Is the Iraqi Army just a bunch of men with AK-47's, road-side bombs and RPG's? Do they have radar? Do they have a foreign intelligence service? Do they have any strategic weapons at all? Where are their SCUD's? Where are their SAM's? So far very little had been discussed regarding our "ally's" real defense capability.

If the US withdraws from Iraq are they just a sitting duck? I support full withdrawal but I haven't seen any info on what their vulnerability is to outside invasion after we leave.

And their propaganda machine is too slick, their cover-ups and email losses so complete, that incompetence simply doesn't explain it. They are liars, and therefor traitors of the worst sort. Everyone who had their eyes open knew their were no WMDs. Certainly all politicians knew. It was simply a matter of whether you had the backbone to weather the storm by sticking to your conscience in the face of such overwhelming popular opinion.

I'll cherish this picture forever, me during Bush's first visit to the UK after the start of the illegal Iraqi occupation:

There was such a rush of statements on all of the programs on teevee at the time by all of them.
Condi was on 3 programs on just 1 day, repeating the same garbage.

Do you remember when a reporter asked General Tommy Franks if there was a plan on his desk to invade Iraq and he denied it?

77. "Why were they in such a hurry to go to war?"
"What was the big rush?" The answer then becomes plainly obviously - not only were they lying, but they knew they were lying. And they knew they had a somewhat narrow window of time.

Why didn't they just let the weapons inspectors finish?" The answer, again, becomes plainly obvious. There was nothing to find and they knew it. And they couldn't afford for public opinion (from the average American) to change.

If I ever run into the rare person who still supports the Iraq War - those are the questions I ask.

Then I say, "The reasons for this war were completely fabricated, AND YOU KNOW IT!" It serves as kind of a mental Karate chop to the brain. It breaks through the cognitive dissonance.

78. What makes me bang my head on the wall and see red...
In the early days leading up to the war on Iraq, I listened to Scott Ritter (and a few others) insisting that there were no WMDs in Iraq. I thought some pretty nasty things about these people, mainly because I did believe the crap these assholes in DC were spewing.

Just before the initial foray into Baghdad, I was petrified to my socks, thinking that Baghdad must be the place where all these horrible WMDs were being stored, just waiting to be unleashed on our troops. The suspense was horrible...and then...

Nothing happened. No retaliation from Iraq using their alleged WMDs.

I didn't want to believe our government would lie to us, but when the storyline (and our justifications for being there) kept changing, I finally had to believe it. Now, if Bush (or any of them) makes a statement, I automatically think it's an out and out falsehood. No more benefit of the doubt for them. They're all LIARS.

OK, so maybe someone somewhere honestly and truly believed there were WMDs in Iraq...I suppose it's possible.

It makes me sick to think I was hoodwinked by this gang of criminals in the first place...enough to be terrified of what our troops would face once they got to Baghdad....

But now I see red each time I think of GWB making a damned JOKE out of the search for nonexistent WMDs at that stupid prayer breakfast. Nope...not here...not here either....har har har. As if I didn't think he was a detestable enough creature before...and the pathetic audience that laughed at the "joke"...

And what makes me want to bang my (or someone else's) head against a wall is knowing that there are people out there who STILL believe there are WMDs in Iraq, and that Saddam Hussein was one of the masterminds behind 9/11.

I see Democrats attacking Democrats based only on the issue of which candidate each "side" thinks is best.

Meanwhile, these idiots who think there are still WMDs over there, and Osama bin Laden and Saddam were best buddies, are walking around free on our city streets, and many of them will vote this November.

That scares me.

79. Seems a shame we don't have enough time to compile the statements from Congress.
There can be no doubt Bush et al lied. We know they will be gone soon, and judging by the turnout at the polls a LOT of voters are wanting to see that happen.

My big fear now is that people will forget the record and how THEIR Senator or Representative voted on that war. If we are serious about a change in this country and its disastrous policies we damn well can't afford to leave these Congressional idjits in office either.

Good to see you, Will!

96. You hypocrites. If Bush lied
so did the leaders of your party.

"Whereas Iraq has consistently breached its cease-fire agreement between Iraq and the United States, entered into on March 3, 1991, by failing to dismantle its weapons of mass destruction program, and refusing to permit monitoring and verification by United Nations inspections; Whereas Iraq has developed weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological capabilities, and has made positive progress toward developing nuclear weapons capabilities" -- From a joint resolution submitted by Tom Harkin and Arlen Specter on July 18, 2002

"Iraq made commitments after the Gulf War to completely dismantle all weapons of mass destruction, and unfortunately, Iraq has not lived up to its agreement." -- Barbara Boxer, November 8, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retained some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capability. Intelligence reports also indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons, but has not yet achieved nuclear capability." -- Robert Byrd, October 2002

"There's no question that Saddam Hussein is a threat... Yes, he has chemical and biological weapons. He's had those for a long time. But the United States right now is on a very much different defensive posture than we were before September 11th of 2001... He is, as far as we know, actively pursuing nuclear capabilities, though he doesn't have nuclear warheads yet. If he were to acquire nuclear weapons, I think our friends in the region would face greatly increased risks as would we." -- Wesley Clark on September 26, 2002

"What is at stake is how to answer the potential threat Iraq represents with the risk of proliferation of WMD. Baghdad's regime did use such weapons in the past. Today, a number of evidences may lead to think that, over the past four years, in the absence of international inspectors, this country has continued armament programs." -- Jacques Chirac, October 16, 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security." -- Hillary Clinton, October 10, 2002

"Iraq is not the only nation in the world to possess weapons of mass destruction, but it is the only nation with a leader who has used them against his own people." -- Tom Daschle in 1998

"Saddam Hussein's regime represents a grave threat to America and our allies, including our vital ally, Israel. For more than two decades, Saddam Hussein has sought weapons of mass destruction through every available means. We know that he has chemical and biological weapons. He has already used them against his neighbors and his own people, and is trying to build more. We know that he is doing everything he can to build nuclear weapons, and we know that each day he gets closer to achieving that goal." -- John Edwards, Oct 10, 2002

"The debate over Iraq is not about politics. It is about national security. It should be clear that our national security requires Congress to send a clear message to Iraq and the world: America is united in its determination to eliminate forever the threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction." -- John Edwards, Oct 10, 2002

"I share the administration's goals in dealing with Iraq and its weapons of mass destruction." -- Dick Gephardt in September of 2002

"Iraq does pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf and we should organize an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." -- Al Gore, 2002

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." -- Bob Graham, December 2002

"Saddam Hussein is not the only deranged dictator who is willing to deprive his people in order to acquire weapons of mass destruction." -- Jim Jeffords, October 8, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." -- Ted Kennedy, September 27, 2002

"There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein's regime is a serious danger, that he is a tyrant, and that his pursuit of lethal weapons of mass destruction cannot be tolerated. He must be disarmed." -- Ted Kennedy, Sept 27, 2002

"I will be voting to give the president of the United States the authority to use force - if necessary - to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." -- John F. Kerry, Oct 2002

"The threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real, but as I said, it is not new. It has been with us since the end of that war, and particularly in the last 4 years we know after Operation Desert Fox failed to force him to reaccept them, that he has continued to build those weapons. He has had a free hand for 4 years to reconstitute these weapons, allowing the world, during the interval, to lose the focus we had on weapons of mass destruction and the issue of proliferation." -- John Kerry, October 9, 2002

"(W)e need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime. We all know the litany of his offenses. He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. ...And now he is miscalculating Americas response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. That is why the world, through the United Nations Security Council, has spoken with one voice, demanding that Iraq disclose its weapons programs and disarm. So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real, but it is not new. It has been with us since the end of the Persian Gulf War." -- John Kerry, Jan 23, 2003

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandates of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." -- Carl Levin, Sept 19, 2002

"Every day Saddam remains in power with chemical weapons, biological weapons, and the development of nuclear weapons is a day of danger for the United States." -- Joe Lieberman, August, 2002

"Over the years, Iraq has worked to develop nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. During 1991 - 1994, despite Iraq's denials, U.N. inspectors discovered and dismantled a large network of nuclear facilities that Iraq was using to develop nuclear weapons. Various reports indicate that Iraq is still actively pursuing nuclear weapons capability. There is no reason to think otherwise. Beyond nuclear weapons, Iraq has actively pursued biological and chemical weapons.U.N. inspectors have said that Iraq's claims about biological weapons is neither credible nor verifiable. In 1986, Iraq used chemical weapons against Iran, and later, against its own Kurdish population. While weapons inspections have been successful in the past, there have been no inspections since the end of 1998. There can be no doubt that Iraq has continued to pursue its goal of obtaining weapons of mass destruction." -- Patty Murray, October 9, 2002

"As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." -- Nancy Pelosi, December 16, 1998

Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 10:34 PM by agincourt
the Democrats only supported war against Iraq if Saddam refused to allow inspectors into Iraq. Saddam allowed inspectors into Iraq, Bush attacked anyway. They are not hypocrites, merely fools for trusting Bush. Do you really think we would have sunk 500 billion in this quagmire if Al Gore was president? Or even have conducted military operations anyway? I don't think so and I think your snippets are meaningless. This is GW Bush's war and trying to turn it on the Democratic congress is unproductive. It's not like you Republicans would be singing praises about the Democrats if the war would have turned out smoothly.
